View Full Version : When should I be worried?

anna_66
06-23-2004, 09:03 PM
I know maybe this doesn't sound like much but Angus hasn't been feeling good today at all:( Besides taking his pills with some PB, he's not eaten. He won't even take a bite of cooked chicken.
He ate a little yesterday (about a cup-1/2 yesterday morning and 1/2 last night).
He's also thrown up 3x's today (yucky yellow stuff).
Also my little niece came over tonight and he barely even cared. This is not like him AT ALL. He even stayed outside when we ate dinner:( It's like he just wants to be by himself. I walked outside after we were done eating and he didn't even open his eyes till I walked out and touched him and then he just barely opened them:(
I think if he doesn't feel any better by tomorrow I'm going to take him to the vets.

Am I just worrying over nothing?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Oh Anna,

I hope it's nothing serious. Hopfully he'll be himself tomorrow.

Katie can be like that too sometimes. She just wants to sleep, and not care about nothing or anything. But she is always herself the next day.

I'll be thinkn' about him tonight, and try not to worry yourself.

Gosh, I think I'd be worried enough to get him to the vet's tomorrow if he's not back to normal. Check to see if his nose is hot, or take his temperature. If it's high, I'd see the vet for sure!

Anna, Sorry Angus isn't feeling well. Sometimes I really do wish they could talk... I'm a worry wart, especially with the furry kids, they're our only kids.

Hugs >:D< to You and Angus

Oh Anna I know how worried you must be seeing him not behaving like his normal self. I think a visit to the vet is the only way you are going to put your fears to rest. Maybe it is nothing more than Angus being bothered by the heat or maybe even could this be a side effect from his medicine? I guess the only one who can answer that will be your vet. Please do let us know what happens. I will say a little prayer for your big boy. Feel better soon Angus. You have many friends here who are worrying right along with your mom. (((hugs)))

RobiLee

Anna,

You definitely are not worrying about nothing. Angus may just have some kind of bug like we might get and he may be better tomorrow. My advice would be if he is not better and still acting the same way tomorrow I would call the vet. We all worry when it comes to our kids and we never know if or when we should call the doctor. At least I know that this has always been my problem. I'm always worried I'm jumping the gun and being a little paranoid. I say jump the gun and err on the side of caution. Thats my opinion. I hope it helped some.

I hate to hear that Angus isn't feeling well. Please give him a hug and kiss for me. Keep us updated!

Feel better soon, Angus.

Poor Angus! I hop eyou are feelingbetter soon!

Anna, I know it is a greater concern with senior dogs, but Sadie will sometimes not eat much for a day or two when she isn't feeling good. I didn't read others reponses, so maybe someone has already said this, but the yellow stuff is stomach bile and just means his stomach is empty. Dogs know when thier stomachs are quite right and often won't eat. Maybe try a little boiled chicken or hanburger tomorrow. It is easier for the dogs to digest then kibble, and small amounts better on an empty stomach so there is no temptation to overeat and get sick from that.

I would definitley take him to the vet.. I don't mean to scare you, but those symptoms sound like what Brooke had before she had to go to the doggy ER. Brooke wouldn't eat or drink anything, kept throwing up, wasn't acting like herself, was always panting and crying and just wanted to go outside and sleep in the grass. She wouldn't really respond to any of us. I would take him in to make sure there isn't a problem.. you can't be too careful..

By the way, what kind of medicine is Angus on?

ChrisH
06-24-2004, 06:02 AM
Poor Angus. :(

My RB dog, Penny, used to get like that sometimes, off her food and vomiting that bile stuff. Like Amy wrote, she would eat and keep down small amounts of boiled chicken & rice and be ok in a day or so.

I so hope dear Angus is feeling better today, but if not, despite what I wrote above about Penny, I wouldn't shillyshally about but get that precious boy right to the vets, just to be sure.

He's not feeling any better this morning:( I tried to offer him a small piece of chicken and he turned his head.

He threw up 3x's last night (12:30, 3:30 and just at 6:15-about an hour ago). It has to be the worst smelling stuff ever.
I think he's throwing up any water at all that he had in him. The last time he drank was around 7pm last night.

I'm definately calling the vets so I can get him in asap.

The medication:
I wouldn't think it would be that since he's been on it for 3 weeks, but I guess you never know.

He's taking:
Proin 50 for incontinence (2/day).
Geri-Form vitamins (1/day).
And .6mg Thyro-Tabs (2/day).
Along with a glucosamin, condrotin/msn supliment (1/day).

Thanks for all the wishful thoughts. I'll let you know asap what the vet says.

I would take him to the vet ASAP! I'm so sorry to hear he's not doing well. Makes me very sad and I can only imagine how you feel. When Duke was bad sick last year, I was beside myself with worry and sadness. I hope so much that it's just his medication. Please let us know what the vet says when you get home and give that sweet Angus a big hug from me.

I was so hoping the news this morning wouldbe better :(

If he hasn't drank anything since last night, chances are he is dehydrated, or getting there. Do his gums feel sticky? That is one of the first signs of dehydration. Any chance he would eat an ice cube or two, to get a little water in him? Chicken broth maybe?

I don't mean to scare you or overreact, but he may need to spend somet ime at the vet and get some IV fluids. Cincy did, when she got so sick the last time, and it really helped her.

Poor Angus :( It's no fun being sick.

anna_66

He was severly dehydrated and come to find out he was bleeding from his butt:(
She didn't say too awfully much, just that she was very worried about his bleeding. It really smelled bad, not a smell you'd ever want to smell.
I didn't know this until shortly before I took him to the vets. I had found him laying on a blanket that I had just washed and seen the blood and he also had it on his butt still:(

Oh guys, what if it's my big boys time to go to the RB. I just don't know how/if I'm/we're going to be able to handle it:(

Thank you so much for the kind words, thoughts and prayers. Please pray more now than ever, I think he really needs it.

Oh no, not our big lovable Angus!! :( I'm hoping and praying that he's ok. :( :(

This is probably highly unlikely, but the bleeding around his bum area could possibly be a ruptured anal gland...I bathed a dog at work yesterday that had blood around there and a tiny hole. It was from a ruptured anal gland. It seems like older dogs have more trouble with that. The smell from that is an awful nasty smell.

Here's an update:

They are pretty sure what's causing the bleeding is a mass in the area of his stomach so he will be having exploritory surgery tomorrow. This is what she told us:

It could just be a non cancerous mass and will remove it.
If it is cancerous she will call me and tell me what his chances are.
If they find it's cancerous and it's spread she will call me (they would then just put him to sleep).

I feel like I've been on a rollercoaster ride all day long.
The good news is that he was feeling a little better tonight after some fluids (they had gave him almost a whole bag).
He even did his famous head twist when he heard our voice:D
We got to go in and be with him and even take him out for a walk (which he loved!). I hated to leave him but I know it's in his best interest to stay there. If we brought him home he would just get sick again from having no fluids. So tonight he stays there. And honestly, he didn't seem too upset. He got right in the kennel and layed down. And of course I took a couple of pictures but I didn't have the digital so I have none to share.

Please, please, please keep my boy in your thoughts and prayers that it's not cancer.

Thanks to all of you. He means the world to us and we can't imagine loosing him.
And thank you Robin for the lovely siggy. I will get it up as soon as I get done posting.

DogLover9501

Anna, I seen that you were lurking, so I've been refreshing and refreshing, waiting for an update ;)

I cannot get him out of my mind! But I don't mind!

Im glad they found out what was causing the bleeding, that must be why he was not feeling like eating/drinking.

I am also glad that he's feeling better, and that he got to go for a walk!

I probably will not sleep tonight! I hope that its not cancer, and they can just simply remove it, and Angus will have a speedy recovery!!

I will be thinking of him non-stop, I also will light a candle each day, and pray for him!

The siggy isn't good :o but the message gets across, and Angus's picture makes it look better ;)

Next time you go see him, please give him a big hug and kiss for me.

And remember to keep us posted!

Anna, Angus, Mark, and the girls ~
I'm very sorry for not replying sooner. I've been watching this thread all day, and having the watch the kitties and make sure my two pups are okay, has gotten in the way of being able to post much. I was in tears while reading some of the uppiedates, but i'm glad to know he's feeling better than he was.

I want to let you know that I have been thinking, worrying, and hoping for you all. We know how loved Angus is in your family, and our love is just as strong for him. I was worried when you brought him to the meeting, because I didn't want to upset any of you. I am very greatful you did bring him, and I really appreciate it. He's just such a sweet, laid-back dog.. how could anyone not fall in love?

And then we have you Anna, one of the most caring, giving people of all time. I want you to know that we dearly and deeply love all of you, and that we're thinking of you. You're such a wonderful fur-mommy, and thank you for that. The pups send you many kisses, and even though Simba can be a cranky butt, he loves you as well.

Sweet, Sweet Angus.. please be good for mommy, and please pull through this. Mommy's RB doggie left her around this time 3 years ago.. and she does not, nor do we want to lose another sweetie. I know you're a strong man.. and I know you can get back to complete health in no time. We love you sweet doggie...... and we're thinking of you.

Angus is such a good boy, and he wouldn't want us to worry - but we will until we hear what Sir Jury has to say.

To all cat-folk - you've never been head-butted until you've been head-butted by a big ol' Rottie! Smushy-faced snuggles to you, Angus, you be good tomorrow, okay?

Well Dr Young just called a few minutes ago and said Angus is feeling good this morning and his abdomen isn't as painful and also that he has an ice cube. He didn't throw up any last night either. So for now she wants to postphone the surgery and just monitor him for now:D
Her call made me very hopeful. I know this sounds crazy but I don't want to get too overly excited just right yet.
But you know, I think he has so many praying for him that God is having second thoughts:)
I can't thank you all enough for all the sweet replies, candles that you've lit and the beautiful siggies. I'm saving them all.

I told Mark on the way home that I'm going to have faith because PT prayers work wonders!

I'm going to visit this afternoon after I get off work on my split so I will hopefully have a couple of minutes to update again.

Keep those prayers coming....THEY ARE WORKING:D

Anna, I'm so sorry I missed this thread until now. I'm praying for Angus, so the PT prayers to God just got one stronger. I'm a strong believer that prayers work. Before I was a part of PT when things looked bad they usually turned out bad. A few weeks ago my cockatiel Alex was egg bound and almost dead. I took her to the vet and posted on PT. I had a lot of PTers praying for her. I have never had an animal be so close to death and pull through. Alex is 100% fine now and I'm praying the same for Angus.
PT PRAYERS REALLY WORK :)

What a sweet face!

This is starting to sound like what happened to my Preacher last fall. He suddenly got very sick--stopped eating, throwing up, dark, tarry stools. He spent close to a week at the vet. He was so dehydrated that his kidneys were shutting down. He was on an IV to rehydrate him and tons of anti-biotics. It took about ten days for him to recover, but then he was back to normal, like nothing was ever wrong. We never figured out what caused the illness in the first place.

My big Daddy Dog Badger, a few years ago, was with the WhiteCoats for 10 days with some unidentified "e-coli" infection and vet kept saying "IF" he comes home. Hey guys, it's Ann here under Mark's id.

Of course silly me, I was so happy to see him and hear that he was going to possibly be coming home tomorrow I didn't even think to ask her:o I will definately ask tomorrow moring.
She was of course again asking if he could have gotten into anything and there wasn't a thing I could think of except the dead bird we found in the yard.
Like Glacier was saying, if he just gets better after this they really don't know what the problem could be since they couldn't tell anything from his bloodwork. She did say if nothing else maybe he had a really bad intestinal infection, otherwise who knows. If he does go back down hill after we bring him home then we will persue other avenues like the surgery. Let's just hope he comes home and does great!

They said I could come anywhere between 9 and noon and you better believe I'll be there first thing when they open:D And of course I'll have to take a few "Welcome Home" pictures of him. The girls are starting to miss big brother, expecially Roxey.

Again I can't say how much all your words, thoughts and prayers mean to both Mark & I.
I'll update again tomorrow.

Having just seen this thread, I am so glad to see that things are looking a little brighter for Angus. Prayers and good wishes seem to have been coming in a constant stream for this good boy. I do want to add my prayer to those of the many others that Angus will recover and enjoy many more years with his Mommy and Daddy and those rambunctious siblings.

Anna I think he overheard the vet talking and knows that he is coming home. ;) He really does look sooo happy!!! :) I can't wait to see the welcome home pictures and hear how he is doing. I know you will probably go a little over the speed limit this morning as you head over to pick up your sweetie. Gosh I wish he could read this thread. I think it would make him feel even better just knowing how many PTers here love him! :)

Well, he didn't get to come home this morning:(

He had bad black tarry poo last night but luckily no throwing up.
I did get to take him for a long (about 15 minutes) walk this morning and he had diarreah (sp?) again:( His eyes were getting droopy again and they were hooking his IV back up as I was leaving. I spent about an hour and 1/2 there just loving and petting him.

Dr Young said she's totally decided against any kind of invasive procedures after seeing his mobility. He is very wobbly and has lost alot of weight. His shoulders are now sticking out as he walks and his butt looks ever so small:(

I asked her what she would do if he were her dog. She said to be very honest she would put him on steroids, a new antibiotic and the coating agent for his intestines they have him on now. If he's feeling better tonight or tomorrow morning they will let him come home. She asked me if him having diarrah would bother us...of course not. We would cover up anything we have to just to have him home and she was glad to hear that. She thinks him coming home will make him feel at least a little better.

So needless to say we will never have an answer on what's wrong with him.
The way I feel when she talks to me is that what little bit of time he has left, she wants him to spend with his family.
I honestly don't think he has much, but who am I to say.

I wish I had better news. Sorry I write a book evertime I post but it seems like I have so much to say. I feel like this rollercoaster ride will never end.

Please keep the prayers coming and I will let you know when I have any new news.

Anna,

Don't apologize for writing so much. We are here for you and want you to write as much as you can so we can give you our prayers and support. I hope Angus will come home and get better. I am so very sorry. I just got home and this is the first thing I checked. I was so sure that he would be doing better. All my guardian angels are still with him so I hope they see fit to let Angus stay with us all a good while longer. If they don't, I hope they all give you the comfort and love from all of us at PT. Please get well, Angus. We don't want you to leave yet.

I'm sorry that Angus didn't get to come home yet.:( His Vet
does sound like a very good one who is considering everything
in his treatment. Once the infection clears up & Angus starts on
his steriods, you should see a big difference in Angus. Here's
hoping more rest, meds. and TLC will do the trick here. Get well
soon Angus. We love ya.:) Liz & Smokey.

p.s. Anna, just wanted to say please don't apologize for "writing

Anna, I don't even know what to say. Words seem so inadequate and I'm sure everyone here feels the same as they try to find the words to comfort and support you. It brings back heartrending memories of feelings I have gone through before. It is so hard, the ultimate price we pay in our love for our pets, but one all of us are willing to suffer because of their perfect love and devotion.

I pray with all my heart that Angus will get to come home and be with you, without pain or suffering. I know he'd feel better to come home and be with those he loves. Thoughts, prayers, and candles burning in hope for you, dear Angus.

HE'S HOME!!!!!!!!!!
Dr Young called at about 6:15 this evening and told us that he was up and about, urinating fine and even barking:D Think he was telling them he wanted to go home!

I called off work tonight just so I could be home in case he got to come home...and he did! We couldn't be more happy than we are right now:D

All he wanted to do on the way home was stick his head out the window. I think the air on his face felt so good to him:)

Man were the girls ever excited to see him! They were all over him and were following him where ever he went. Can you believe he even felt good enough to play with his big red ball?! It made us feel good that he felt well enough to play! Of course these words just can't explain the feelings that we're feeling right now. I just want to jump for joy!!!

I'm uploading the pictures I took of him this evening and will be making a new post with them in it.

Again from the bottom of our hearts thank you for all your hopes and prayers....they've really worked!

Love Anna, Mark, Angus, Roxey and Huney
