How did you get your cat? Post to this forum and say it.
How I got my cat was this. She was in my grandmas yard and she is alergic to cats so she called us and we came and picked her up. We put up posters seeing if any one owned the cat and no one did. So we kept her and all the kittens (at least 10 of them). Then my family had money problems and we had to get rid of all the kittens but not fally. Fally was really sad and lonely. She became really scared and wouldnt let any one go any where near her. When she finally got used to me I was really happy she wouldnt let me leave her site like I was her kitten i thought how happy she must be and i was happy to and then we moved and all was sad.

And....why were we sad? Did you not take the cat with you when you moved? That was great of you to take in a cat that needed a home plus her kittens!!!

Everyone else is probably bored with my tales, but you're new, so I get to tell it again!!
Mimi came to me when she was six weeks old, the product of a brother/sister marriage! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif She will be 12 in June, and is still going strong.
Butter found us at the first of this year. It was cold outside and he just stayed on my front porch. I finally gave in and invited him inside. He's never left!!

Shadow (2 yr. old black DLH female) and Whisper(2 yr. old gray tabby DLH male)came to live with me when their original owners were moving and could no longer care for them. Callie, my 1 yr. old orange tabby female, came to us after someone had thrown her out of a truck on a side road and my fiancee pulled over to pick the little kitten up. Lucky for me and her, he was there to rescue her.

I was in GA for spring break and saw the cutest kitten on a corner. She was teared up with bites from bugs and was dirty from dust and leaves and dirt that clung to her fur. We took her to the vet, got her vaccinated, and bought her a collar. We named her Moon and even though she had to travel with us 1,200 miles to get back home, we made it and she is sitting in my lap right now. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I have eight cats http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif but then, I'm just a big softie for a sad story! from eldest to youngest I'll briefly outline the situations:

Puca: I wanted a black cat, but she was actually pushed on me as she had no home. She's tabby.

Juju: My black cat! But she was very ill, and subsequently very nervous and unfriendly. She's a very beautiful cat and it our towns Fire Brigade mascot!( In Europe black cats are very lucky!)

Willow: A georgeous grey, no home. As it turns out she has food allergies, so she's high maintenance.

Candi & Pearl: Grey tabby, and full grey. No home and very very ill, so I just couldn't walk away. The lived, to all our amazement!

Harry: Long haired full black. I just fell in love, he was last in the litter, will no home offer.

Rufus: Also longhaired, ginger & white. Dh wanted him, no home offers. click here to see him!http://catoftheday.com/archive/2001/March/17.html

Merlin: Was very ill and underweight. The owner wanted to put him asleep, so, I asked them if I could take him and see what I could do. It was touch and go for a while, but now we have the shiniest, healthiest cat and guess what? he's also full black! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Sorry but it seems that there isn't a link to Rufus from that address I just posted. I don't know if there is another way to do it, but if you're interested you can see him in the catoftheday achive for March!

Tonight is my one-year anniversary with Trixie. My 19-year-old cat, BeeBee, had gone over the Rainbow Bridge 6 months earlier and I finally felt almost ready to welcome a new cat into my heart but planned on waiting until school was out for the summer (I teach school.) I had gone to a friend's house and he told me to check out one of his little-used rooms. When I opened the door, four 8-week-old kittens about bowled me over! They belonged to a girl that my friend was dating at the time and he had arranged to have the kittens there as a surprise for me. Although I wasn't prepared at home - no food, no litter, no toys - I couldn't resist taking the cutest, most rambuntious baby of the bunch home with me.

Trixie was such a wild child that two weeks later I went to the ASPCA to get her a much-needed playmate. I had my heart set on finding a Holstein cat (I grew up with Holstein cows - but you would probably say I was looking for a tuxedo cat) but fell in love with a precious orange and white kitten with a nonstop motor. Bo had a name and a home within about two minutes.

Sometimes the best things in life don't go according to our plans. We've got to be willing to monitor and adjust (teachers will know exactly what I'm talking about.)

I know what you mean about planning, or lack of it when it comes to acquiring pets. Of all my cats, only two were planned. I adopted Zebo at the Irving pound. He's been at the rainbow bridge 5 years now. Toot was adopted from a neighbor's litter. I told her if any of them were orange boys I wanted one. While her cat was still pregnant she moved to a neighboring town. About two months later there was a knock on my door, and there was Coleen, with a six week old orange and white baby boy cat. Toot shortly followed Zebo to the rainbow bridge. All my others came to me unplanned and unexpected, but were loved and welcomed just as much as Toot and Zebo were.

I found my Alexander hiding in the engine of my Grandfather's car (luckily he was away visiting my aunt so the car wasn't being driven). I had been planting tulip bulbs when I heard Napoleon (my Tuxedo cat who stayed with my dad when I got married) growling through the screen. I investigated, and heard the engine of the car meowing. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif My dad crawled underneath and pulled out a dusty, greasy kitten. We knew we couldn't keep it--Napoleon would kill it for sure. Alex stayed in the spare bedroom for almost six months until he was big enough to defend himself. Napoleon hated Alex's guts until the day I got married and took Alex with me. Alex thought his big brother was wonderful, though--wrestling with him, chasing him, talking to him all the time, "pretending" to hunt him... http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
Nellie was a foster kitty who decided to stay. You can't say no to Nellie. She's too sweet, too loud, and too persistent. Alex was fearful and hostile, but slightly less so than with my previous fosters, so my husband and I thought we'd give it a shot. The two furballs are now best of enemies. They enjoy stalking and chasing each other.

I still can't figure out why Alex was so crazy about Napoleon, but hasn't liked my foster cats who were friendly to him.

The way I got Luna isn't very spectacular...
I got her in June last year - as a baby of six weeks.
After my Katz died on May 3, I soon decided to get another cat, and I was told by my brother-in-law's mother that friends of her would have a cat that just gave birth to a litter of 5 kitten. So I've visited them and saw these five tiny babies in their box - absolutely adorable! Two of them were already adopted (but still with their mom), and the rest looked totally alike, so I didn't chose one of them but let the cats chose me instead. The one that stayed by my side was Luna. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
A few weeks later, the owner of Luna's mom told us that the kitten were ready to be adopted (I know six weeks is very young, but I had the impression she wanted to get rid of them) and when I came, Luna's litter mates already went to their new homes. That was last year on June 5, and so Luna's living with me for almost one year now! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I got Jewel eleven years ago from a lady that worked with my mom. She had two cats have kittens at the same time. Since I have gotten married and moved, Jewel doesn't want to live with me. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif She wants to stay at my parents house. So I let her. Now I have two four week old kittens. I got them from another lady that works with my mom. A stray cat had them under her trailor. A week ago the mama was hit by a car. We have had them ever since. They are named Smokey and Bear. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I was walking through my university parking lot after class a year and a half ago. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw what I thought was a tiny black bird walking around. When I looked closer, I noticed it was a scared kitten. Incredibly underweight and frail, she was a sad sight. She was trying to follow people but the second they'd turn around to pet her, she'd run under a car. After about 45 minutes of sweet talking her and several close calls at catching her, I told her that was enough games. I told her I was taking her home and I'd take care of her, then I just grabbed her, turned her on her back and cradled her like a baby. She began purring and that was the formation of our bond. We've been inseperable since that evening. She sleeps on my chest and follows me everywhere. She is truly a joy. A few months after I got Shiloh, my dog Dessi died. I believe Shiloh was a gift from God to help me deal with the death of my beloved 14 yr old labrador. I love my kitty so much and wouldn't trade her for the world.

The vet estimated she was about 7 months when I got her in September so I decided to celebrate her birthday on Valentine's Day.

Here's a pic of her and her little brother Reece.

I'll start with the inside babies first:

Critter came with my husband when we got married. Joey had rescued him from the pound.

Bruce was one of a litter that Worf (outside baby) had. We found homes for his other two brothers.

Colonel was a stray that a co-worker found near his home and gave to me.

Outside babies:
Dixie and Cletus (brother and sister basset hound/terrier mixes) were found in our yard as puppies. Someone had just dumped them there.

Daisy (beagle mix) was found along side a highway when she was a puppy. As there were no houses around and she was only about 8 weeks old, I brought her home.

Several of our fifteen outside babies just walked up one day and started eating our cat food. Others were born to our cats. All of our cats have now been fixed; but, as you can imagine, it was impossible financially to get them all fixed at once. Soooo, some of my girls got themselves in a little bit of trouble before we could get them fixed.

But, no matter how we got them, we love each and every one! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Secretariat- stray in my neighborhood, I wans't allowed to have cats then (dad doesn't like them) but she slowly weaseled her way into my house http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif That was 7 years ago.

Grem Lynne- best friend found her and two others abandoned in a box in the desert... friend kept her brother, found a home for her sister, I talked my dad into letting me keep her. That was four years ago.

Hollow and Sparky are father/daughter and boyfriend/girlfriend. I trapped them to get them fixed (strays in neighborhood). Hollow is friendly, Sparky is a hard stray. THat was a year ago that I traped them (I knew them for half a year before that) and I talked dad into letting me keep Hollow. I snuck Sparky in last January, she has been living in my room since and dad deosn't know! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif (I'm 21 in July, but living at home utnil I'm done college)

The most reccent addition to my burgeoning familly has the most interesting story of them all. During an extremely stormy day while I was in a sulk about something, my brother told me to go to the garage, grudgingly I complied. There in my garage was a not-quite-adolescent kitten. He was a solid black shorthair and I was enchanted. Of course I new that I was not supposed to get anymore cats, but he wouldn't leave. not wanting, him to starve at my door step, I fed him. Now he really won't leave. Not that I would want him to. It was love at first sight.

Fun topic...fun to read your stories!
Got my oldest...Kitto..from a shelter (where I think we all ought to get our kittas) where she stuck her paws out and lured me to her cage. She was all about purring and loving and wooing me that day! She turned out to be very independent, but loves me dearly. The next one came when I told my mom that she had to get a cat when we got a house together (long story) and she has always loved persians soooo...she found a really wonderful breeder and got a darling buff colored pure-bred Persian. He turned out to have THE sweetest personality I have ever come across. The third kitta is also a pure-bred (remember when I said that I think we should all get our cats from shelters?Shame on me). Went to a cat show as my son had never been to one and anyone who loves cats ought to experience the strangeness of cat breeders at least once! Anyway, came across a kitten in a cage who stretched her lovely little paws out at me and insisted she be taken home. It is a major no-no to pet the cats at cat shows and I GOT HER OUT OF HER CAGE!!! Well, several dollars later, she came home to live with me...and now I have 3. I worry I will be an old lady someday with nothing but cat food cans and wime bottles in my trash! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Terra-chan came as a gift from my brother when I left home and moved to a new city. I had always had cats, but had to leave mine behind (she was very ill and would not have survived the trip). Terra has adapted very well to apartment living.
Misao was found by a friend at work. Hubby and I had recently decided to get a playmate for Terra and Misao basically fell in our lap. She required a lot of rehabilitation time (she had 5 different kinds of parasites, frostbite and was severly underweight). Misao is now a healthy happly 14lbs girl and on a diet.
I'm very surprised that we don't have more at this point with all the volunteer work I do at my local shelter, but there simply isn't room. Just wait until we get our house though http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif

Dear Bubblesppg,

What a great topic! We all seem to love talking about our fur-babies.

After YEARS of no-pet apartment living, I moved to a pet tolerant condo. I chose two male litter-mates to enrich my life. They were gray tabbies -- Perspicacity "Cassy" and Sassafras "Sassy". Unfortunately Sassy had a heart problem that wasn't noticed soon enough. He went to the rainbow bridge this February as a mere 19 month old. Cassy and I suffered. About this time my parents were having a lot of medical problems that were basically respitory. Their sweety-pie DLH's abundant fluffiness was adding to their problems and they were looking for a no-kill shelter for Olivia. I asked if she could come be a companion to Cassy and me and this solved both our home's problems.

The first couple weeks were a little challenging, but Cassy and Livvy are very zestful playmates. They play, eat, sleep, wrestle, and cuddle together, but he will not let her groom him. (This surprises me: does it mean he doesn't completely accept her yet?)

Thanks for letting me sound off about my favorite obsessions!

Amber and the fur-kids!

Blueberry was Raspberry's sister from the liter. She was the first picked and she was very lonley the first night so we got the one that got along the most which was Raspberry. She was so sweet. It was unbelivable. She was hit by a car on Sept.28,1999 and was only 1 year old and a couple of months! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif
My cat Raspberry was adopted from a friend's cat who had babies. A liter of 4 cats. We adopted her at 6 weeks. She is still really cute! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Tabby's story is more terrifing. She was maybe 6 months old (Raspberry was 1 year old)
and was at the pound. She was hiding in the corner of her cage and was sleeping. Her appearence was not atrractive, looking really lazy. But my brother said What the Heck, Might as well Get Her. So we did cuz the little card said she was 4 months old and we belived it. So when we went into the room to visit with her. She cuddled with all of us. So we got her. My friend was with me and she let me bring her into the house. She went crazy and she jumped out of my arms into the house. Then she limped.
She kinda got along with Raspberry then. When we got to the Doctors office he said she was very pregnat and could have babies anytime, she had a fever from the pond that spread and she was having leg problems becuz her leg was hit by a car. She is 1 year old and 2 months now! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/tongue.gif

I got Thelma & Weezie six years ago, from a pair of fellow scuba divers. The divers came to our local dive club meeting, asking if anyone wanted a kitten. It seems they had taken in a "chubby" stray, who had subsequently delivered five kittens. (Surprise!) The kittens were now old enough for adoption.

I think I was over there the very next day! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I went intending to adopt one kitten ... and came back with two! Thelma & Weezie played together so sweetly, I just couldn't resist taking them both. I'm so glad I did ... knowing they are buddies helps when I have to leave for the office!

(I am happy to report that the other three kitties were promptly adopted, and mamma cat has since been spayed.)

http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gifThis is the story of how Cleocatra became my baby:

Christmas 2000

When my sister and brother-in-law were still dating and my sister was living out of town (long distance relationship) my brother-in-law got two kittens for her from a foster home as a X-mas gift - Cleocatra and her brother Mishka. My sister couldn't handle both kitties in her tiny apartment so Mishka went to live with my brother-in-law. Cleocatra came home with my sister every weekend and the entire family fell in love with her - even my mum who was petrified of all animals. Once my sister became engaged she moved back home until she got married - along with my sister came Cleocatra. When my sister finally got married my parents and I refused to part with Cleocatra. We threatned legal action if my sister should try and remove Cleo from her new home (only half joking). My sister was devastated but it all worked out for the best. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gifWhen Cleo got really sick my mum was able to stay home with her all day and take care of her something that my sister would have never been able to do. This story is still a happy one because my sister now lives only a half an hour away from us and works about 10 minutes away from us - she visits Cleo on weekends and weekdays at lunch and after work until we come home.

http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gifWhen Cleocatra first started coming to visit us my mum had a list of rules for her to abide by - my poor mum all her rules were broken by Cleo's second visit. My mum who had never before touched a kitty (she used to put food out for strays and race back into the house before they could emerge from their hiding place) has become Cleo's favourite person. She pets, cuddles and kisses Cleo the most and when Cleo last got really sick she even started carrying her around.

Even though we are so saddened by Cleo's sickness we would never trade a second of the time we have with her - each day she makes us laugh and smile. I'm 23 and I could move out at any time but I know that my parents would disown me before they give Cleo up so I stay only to be with my baby.

Sorry I know it's long but I've edited out quite a bit. I could go on forever about Princess Cleocatra (Her Royal Highness Princess Fluff Bottom).

Trevor is the first cat I ever owned. He was picked out by my son's best friend to be a "new cat" for his grandmother because her cat had just died. The grandmother didn't want another cat so instead of returning him to the pet store my son decided to bring him home. He smuggled him into the house that night (complete with litter box and litter) and put him in his room. In the morning when I went into his room to wake him up for school a teeny tiny little orange fluff ball walked down the bed to meow at me. I fell in love! There was no need for my son to ask if we could keep him! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Andy was found by my mom. She lives an hour from me and was at her friend's yard sale one day. The woman across the street came to the sale with two kittens under her arms. She asked if anyone would like one of them (the other one was spoken for). My mom said "just give me time to call my daughter." She ran home and called me and begged me to ride down to see him. Of course I couldn't resist. He was a tiny one pound ball of white fluff and again I was hooked! Needless to say he rode home with us that day! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Neither one of my cats was planned but I think sometimes that's the best way!

I can't resist telling the stories of my sweet kitties!

Murf: my first cat ever. When I went to the animal shelter to look for a cat, he was talking up a storm as I walked by. He didn't seem to talk to anyone else who was in the room. The attendant told me that Murf was telling me that he was going home with me. Who am I to argue with a cat? He's now 13+ years old, a big orange & white tabby, my first sweet baby boy.

Then came Squee. He was a 4 week old baby left alone when his mother was killed. The other kittens were adopted quickly, but not Squee. I don't know why, because for me he was a sweet and lovable boy. He was gray with green eyes. He made a funny meow noise that got him his name. When I had surgery, he came and sat with me for weeks as I recovered. The day I got the OK from the doctor that everything was fine, Squee disappeared. I hope he went to live with someone else that needed his love and attention.

Three months after Squee was gone, I got Daisy from the pound. This was a county run shelter that has poor conditions. The day I was there, over 40 kittens and 30 adult cats were for adoption, or would be killed. Daisy was a beautiful high-energy tuxedo kitty that went to the Rainbow Bridge in November last year.

And then Winston, my little blind kitty. He was found in an old tire in a warehouse, crying for his mom. He was only 2 weeks old, and has been my baby ever since. He's got other health problems, but is a fighter! And of course, he is a snugglebug!

Thanks for letting my tell my stories. I sure have enjoyed reading how so many wonderful people have helped their kitty friends!

I'm new here, so I think it is a good topic to start. I hope you forgive my bad english. I am chilean, but live in Brazil, since I was a baby. I got married last year and moved to Niterói, a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

At first, me and my husband got Federico Garcia Lorca, a siamese cat, from a pet shop. But he had FIP, and went to the rainbow bridge 2 months after his arrival. :-(

We waited a for a period of quarantine, went to a park, in front of our apartment (were a large group of cats live, with help from good people), found a kitten and took her home.

That was Dana Scully. She is white, with tabby tail and tabby spots on her head and a little bit feral. She didn't really wanted to be taken to a home. She was only 4 weeks old and it took me two days to pet her. Now she is completely sweet, loves our attention
and is always aroud us.

Three weeks after that, we decided to get another cat, and thet it should be black. Then, only two days after our decision, a little black cat appeared in the parking lot of our building. We heard her meowing. She was 3 weeks old, completely black and was starving. We "captured" her from under a car with a litrtle bit of canned salon cat food. :-) My husband called her Odivan, like a brazilian football player, but when we discovered she was a girl, we changed it to Odivana.

Then, at the same park where we found Scully, we got Bill Gates. He is a mixed siamese cat, with crossed eyes, and we named him Bill Gates to give him luck, since Lorca wasnt lucky at all.

Well, sorry for the long message.

Bouja was saved by a Rescue org. in LA. I adopted her when she sat up, shook herself, walked over to my fingers on the cage and licked me. She was promptly scared of everything after that. The woman running the adoption process said she hadn't looked at anyone else in the 3 months they had been bringing her to these events. :)
Bushes was part of a family with 2 kids, 2 dogs and 3 cats. The mom developed allergies and had to find homes for all of the animals. :( She worked with my sister, who knew I was looking for a friend for Bouja. The names together were just too cute to resist. She came to visit (to make sure of Bouja's reaction) for a weekend 2 years ago, and just stayed forever.
Those are my sweeties. They love me. :D

LOL, Susana! I love your cats' names! Welcome to Pet Talk! My family is Brazilian and I lived in Vitoria, E.S. for almost seven years.
Please let Agent Scully, Odivana ( :D ) and Bill know that their buddy Charlie (my cat) from New York sends snuggles!
Tchau!

How Tebaldi came to live with me (Cat of the day Nov 8 2000)

A friend told me of a situation she had head about at a block of flats (apartments) in the city. A couple living in the flats, who had four cats, had an ugly divorce. The husband left and then the wife moved out, taking her 3 cats with her - leaving HIS 4 year old cat behind.

Neither ever came back for Tebaldi and she hung around the flats for four years waiting for the family to return. Kind people who lived in the flats put food out for her & took her to the vet but couldn't adopt her because they had their own pets.

For four years poor Tebaldi stayed outside the flat in which she had once lived with her family, in all weathers. She became increasingly stressed & started to overgroom, licking huge patches of white fur off her body. She licked her bare skin until sores formed. The vet prescribed valium for her to reduce her stress but suggested that Tebaldi would never recover until she had her own family again. He felt the over grooming was her way of trying to look clean & tidy so that someone would adopt her.

When I heard this story, I decided that I must rescue this poor puss even though I lived then in a one bedroom flat where cats were not allowed. We took a cat cage and trapped Tebaldi: she was scared and yowling and was covered in raw skin & sores.

When I got her home she hid behind the shelves & was purring with fear. She didn't eat, drink or poo for days & I thought she would die. Eventually, very slowly, she started to come out from hiding and eat and drink & use the litter tray. She was scared of me for a long time but at night she would sleep under my bed & I could hear her purring. And as soon as she moved in, she stopped licking her fur off and I could see fine new hair growing in the bald patches!

That was five years ago. Having Tebaldi has completely changed my life. I soon got a better job & was able to buy a little house with a fenced garden so Tebaldi can sleep in the sun. She is a beautiful, intelligent cat with such a gentle nature and we are best friends. She sleeps by my head every night.
I cannot understand how people could have a pet like her for years and simply walk away and abandon her - it still makes me so angry to think of the years she suffered. But she is happy now!

Thanks for listening to Tebaldi's story.

Tebaldi,
That was a really great story about the rescue of your precious kitty. How wonderful that you both have each other now.

After many years of not having a cat, my Jasper arrived in my life as a thrown out tiny kitten, under a disabled old truck where I worked. My niece crawled under, lured him closer with food, then grabbed him. He attacked her but she held on. Taken to the vet he had his badly injured tail amputated, and was treated for an infection. She worked with him, taming him, and later he came to live with me, still a little guy. He is now almost 6 years old, the love of my life.

My Eli is still a tiny but growing kitten, today weighing in at almost 3 lbs. He was trapped on Pearl Harbor, and taken to the local humane society by two kind ladies. They learned with him so wild he would be put to sleep. They were upset and crying when I entered the office to redo a lost animal report for my Jasper. (Lost but home again after almost 3 months.) I cried with them and when their phone calls found no one to take him, I said I would. To find him a home. It felt like I would be disloyal and was giving up on my lost cat, replacing him if I kept the kitten. Well, he has a home now, right here. Wild and a spit fire when he came, he is now sweet and a precious delight in my life.

Jasper is home now recovering and Eli is working hard on winning him over. Their future is secure now here with me.

Tebaldi,

I was really touched by your two-legger's story of your rescue. I am so happy you found a loving home where you feel safe and wanted. I checked out your picture ... you are so lovely! I'm so glad your pretty white fur grew back. You now have an new "admirer."

Thanks, Spencer! I wanted to see Tabaldi.

Tabaldi's story of rescue is beautiful. I'm trying to focus on the wonderful new home she has and not the original "dysfunctional" one.

I'm a little late chiming in here, but what a great rescue story and what a beauty Tebaldi is!! I agree, I don't see how people can just abandon animals like that, but I'm sure glad that Tebaldi found a great forever home!! :)

I only just read this thread, I also don't understand how anyone could leave a pet behind. It makes me wonder if these people really do love animals.
