View Full Version : milk jug rings

My cat is a stitch! He just loves to bring me milk jug rings so I can toss them and he can chase them down! Sometimes he will toss them into the air himself. This keeps him occupied for at least a half and hour a night. Needless to say, we have milk jug rings everywhere in the house...once in a while I collect them together and throw them out...then we start over. Even the action and sound of opening a new jug of milk or water will bring him running...anybody else play this way??

It's so funny how they play with ordinary things that they find around the house, but will totally ignore the toys that you go out and buy for them! Charlie found a piece of gold string, the kind you wrap presents with, and that's his favorite toy. Sometimes when I come home from work, he's by the door with the string, waiting for me to play. In the mornings, he will leave the string by my bed or near the bathroom door in the hopes that I'll have time to drag the string around a few times for him!

Oh Jazzer loves strings too! I have a long fuzzy kind of string on a clear plastic stick...it was a Christmas gift from a friend and cat lover...he has been playing with that thing for 3 years. Of course its knotted up and grody looking, but he loves to chase it! So we take a twirl around the house at least once or twice a day. He keeps me pretty well trained and active....I will always be owned by a cat! They are the best!

The funny thing about my cats, I often find their toys in their beds, or in their food or water bowl, and even in my shoes!

Oh, I forgot to mention-tying shoelaces when Charlie is around is nearly impossible!
...and I have a pair of sweatpants with the strings hanging down the front...if I don't remember to keep those strings tucked in, I get "attacked" whenever I walk around! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

I find those milk jug rings in my bed all the time, and in the bathtub too! Jazz will bring me the bottle rings when I'm trying to sleep. He wants to play all the time. He is 8 years old and still plays like a kitten.

Drawstrings on pants and jackets are fair game. DJ, under the stove and couch are goldmines, too.

My two LOVE an old drawstring from a long dead pair of sweatpants. I come home from work, the string, an old sock, and several sparkle balls are all lying on the couch next to them. We have "string time". I toss it, they chase it, toss, chase. They've trained me well! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

I just bought a new couch and it has space under it (my old one was a hide a bed), sooooo you can imagine the delight Jazz has over being able to go under the couch and play.....we play 'get my paw, if you can', and yes, there are now foil balls and paper and milk jug rings under the couch http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

I had a little calico named Yankee who had a big orange rabbit's foot (fake) that she would play with for hours, throwing it up in the air, kicking it around (even with her back feet like she was playing soccer!), carrying it around in her mouth. But sometimes, after playing for awhile, she would seek me out, meowing plaintively. That's when I knew she had either kicked it under the couch, the refrigerator, or the pantry door and needed me to rescue it for her!

Every now and then I grab a yardstick and do a sweep under the furniture....refrigerator, hutch, sofa, microwave cart. When my cats see me get the yardstick they follow me as if they were walking with an invisible leash! They know where I am headed and they can't wait to be re-united with their long "lost" things! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Laura my cats do the same thing.

My cats had this old stick that had strips of fabric tied to the stick. They loved it to death! Now it's in the trash because as they played with it more all the fabric came off!

Sounds to me like all these cats have a whoppen good time....I keep all Jazz's toys in a box that he can easily tip over, and he must be bored with his milk rings because he tipped over the box today and got some 'other' toys out...now thats unusual...he almost never plays with his real toys. But just wait till breakfast, I will be opening a new jug of milk...... http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

I discovered a new cat toy this weekend! It's stuffed dog - flat and blue - with catnip and a piece of crinkle paper inside. They are in love with it. They lick, lick, and lick the bag where the paper is, then roll it over and sit on it to hear the paper crackle. They run around like mad kitties, then come back for another hit of the bag. They're hilarious! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Thanks Laura http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif I will certainly look for one of those....Jazz would love it! He loves crinkly paper and catnip! By the way, I opened a new jug of milk this morning and did he come running http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif I had picked up all the milk jug rings to vaccume and I tossed most of them...I mean how many does one cat need? He chased the new one around for about an hour....cheap toy http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

My red tabby/white female DSH, Rosie, won't leave my hair doodles alone. If I haven't left enough of them laying around the house to suit her needs, she goes into a basket in the bathroom to sneak extras out. She's also been caught taking pens and pencils out of their holders and running off with them. For a long while I couldn't figure out how my calligraphy pens kept ending up rooms away from where I kept them (I should have known someone else was helping me when I kept finding them on the floor as well). At least she didn't wreck the pens or get ink everywhere.

I thought that my cat was the only one that loved milk jug rings! When I lived in an apartment building, there was a crack under the door, leading out into the apt. building. I would go to leave and there were always at least 3 on my door step. I am sure that my neighbors thought that I was weird, since I had the rings on the door step. On a few occasions, I would come home, and see a little paw, where Lucy was trying to reach under the door to get her precious toys.

That is so funny....because my cat gets them under the door too. I live in an apartment building, and I find them in the hallway when I am leaving in the morning or coming home. Once the cleaning lady, who vaccumes the halls etc, said to me...oh I have something for you...she went into her pocket and handed me 3 milk jug rings. We both laughed. I thought it was rather sweet for her to save them and give them back to me.
Jazz sticks his paw under the door all the time. He meows and meows if I'm in the hallway talking to someone and he can hear me. Cats rule http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Hey, DJ
Thanks for the milk jug ring tip. I tossed one at Charlie the other day and it was a hit!

Hey Thelmalu99! Thanks for the comment! I am glad your cat(s) are having fun with them! I would be interested to know how many cat lovers out there never tried milk rings....I have picked up some great tips from this chat room. I love coming here and reading all about other peoples cats and habits and fun times. The one about 'you know you're a cat lover when...' was one of the funniest things I ever read... http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif

Our first cat loved the plastic strips off frozen orange juice cans, but none of our subsequent cats has been interested in them. A warning on cats playing with string: be sure they are not swallowing it. Our male cat swallowed some string when he was about a year old, and he had to have it surgically removed, along with a piece of his intestines. Also, someone at work had a cat who swallowed thread, with the same result. The vet told us that cats have "barbs" on their tongues, which make it difficult for them to get the string out once it starts going down, so it will just keep going in until they bite or break it off. Our cat, now 7 years old, seems absolutely fascinated with chewing string; we really have to watch him. One morning I was in the bathroom flossing my teeth, and he got up on the sink, and was standing on his hind legs in the bowl, with his paws on my chest, looking into my mouth. It looked so funny in the mirror, with this little round cat head in front of my face! But, I am really careful about discarding the floss, so he cannot get at it!

Louise C,
Thanks for the warning, I'll have to start supervising Charlie with the string and the yarn.

PS-Charlie always tries to grab the dental floss when I'm using it, too - just like your kitty does...silly kitties!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Hi there! My cat Jazz is obsessed with string, most especially with dental floss. I have to watch him like a hawk also. He will dig it out of the waste basket in the bathroom so I have learned to put it into the garbage right away http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Those silly cats:0
I sew as a hobby and I have to watch him when I cut the threads, he will steal any he can. I am so afraid he will need that surgery some day. I guess I just have to really watch him.

About the string - we have had cats for years, and had never had this problem, but I guess we never had a string swallower before. This time, the cats were playing with a ball of string, and they seemed to be enjoying it so, I let them keep it. So stupid on my part! Our female didn't eat it, but the male did, and he does seem to be very fascinated with string, thread, ribbon, etc. I think that short pieces probably are not as much of a problem, as they might pass through, but I do not take any chances. I felt so terrible when it happened, as our cat was only a year old or so old, and he was so sick. Fortunately our vet figured out what was wrong quite quickly - of course, string did not show up on the xray... Apparently this is not an uncommon occurrence, so I try to warn people whenever they talk about their cats playing with string. And of course, you always see all those pictures of kittens/cats with a ball of yarn...

I heard about the string problem years ago from a friend whose cat had to have surgery to remove it. It was actually tinsel from their Christmas tree....I have never used tinsel from that time onward. I sort of forgot about the string thing with cats I
had, but with Jazz everything is a challenge. He gets into everything and anything he can put his paws to. When I put my sewing machine away on the shelf, I have to remember to remove the bobbin and the spool of thread, or he will try to chew it....silly cat http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Cosmo (rainbow bridge) loved dental floss so much, he could hear me pulling it out of the box from two rooms away and would come running, looking at me expectantly!

Hi 4feline, so sorry about Cosmo. My Buddy (also rainbow bridge) loved dental floss also. He was a Himalayan, and to see him with dental floss (or any string for that matter) coming out of both sides of his mouth, you know like whiskers....still brings back fond memories. He never swollowed it, but used to like to carry it around, until I saw him that is, and gently took it away from him. Maybe thats where Jazz got the idea that dental floss was great fun http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

The Abys, especially Ms Wynki, love dental floss, and will root about in the waste baskets for it. Having had a good friend who learned the hard, and expensive, way from her plumber that you can't flush it, we roll the used floss in a little ball and put it in an old mayo jar kept in the master bath for that purpose. Visiting friends have been known to react strangely.

I was reminded of another good toy when I bought a new blusher compact recently. I have a good, expensive blusher brush, so I toss those useless dinky little blusher brushes they put in compacts these days. I toss them right to the cats, because they love to "kill" them, and it keeps them away from my expensive brush!

My cat is not into plastic bags, but he does carry some weird things around the house sometimes....And I like the idea of giving him my old make-up brushes, he would try to 'kill' it. That is so funny. The milk jug rings are on vacation since he got a couple of new 'mice'. They are cat nip filled and he hangs out with them alot. Then he gets really frisky and sometimes will do the milk jug rings again...but he sort of has lost interest in them....I wonder why?

This reminds me of my cat Scooter. He has lots of store bought toys, but he really isn't interested in them.
His absolute favorite is plastic drinking straws. He will take them right out of people's cups. He is too cute when he starts flinging the straws around.
When I moved from my last apartment I found literally dozens of straws under the beds, sofas, stove etc.

How bold!! I love it! Isn't that just like a cat? They really take what they want. Jazz is also a very bold kind of cat. He is not above taking food off someones plate or anything like that....that is if he can get close enough...I think thats why cats are labled sneaky...but I like the straw thing, I bet Jazz would like to play with those too!

Two Thanksgivings ago, I had a basket of mixed nuts in the shells on the coffee table. Big Mac took a liking to the walnuts and kept flicking them out of the basket to play with them. We moved the next July and found walnuts under all the furniture. We packed them in the box with the other cat toys, and today he still has walnuts in his toy box and around the house!

That is so cute! What they won't find to play with! I am always amazed. I just started a new part time job and my cat Jazz is a little lonely...I have to find some new things for him to play with. Maybe I'll just leave a bowlful of walnuts (with shells still on of course so they roll around) on the coffee table. Perhaps they will keep him amused while I am at work.

I give Hollow (my one cat out of four who likes toys) all kinds of household things to play with... like toilet paper rolls when the toilet paper is gone! I had to stop giving him the "milk" rings (mine were from other beverages, I"m lactose intollerant!) becuase he was eating them!!! Chewing it into little pieces and swallowing! LOL This fat cat will eat anything http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif

I had a fat cat once who would eat anything! Except people food that is! But seriously, Jazz (my not fat cat) started eating the softer kind of milk jug rings so I can't give him those anymore. They are like the things you pull off of frozen orange juice cans. I guess they are just too soft. He can easily chew them into little pieces and I think he did swallow some because I never did find it all. Thankfully he suffers no ill effects http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
