Yes, I'm at work with three little kittens in a box next to me.LOL
Theirs eyes aren't opened yet. One is gray, one looks tabby and the tirth is solid black.

Went to the vet right away and picked the replacement formula at home. So far I have fed them twice with a serynge.

I'll need help from those of you that foster.Never got so tiny kittens before.

The whole story and pics when I get home.

I'm sooo excited :p and I love them already!

Oh Koxka!! That is so exiting - do you intend to keep them? Have you looked for the mother around in the area? It's quite a task you have taken on, but I'm sure you can cope! :) ;) Feeding them the right food is probably the most important at the moment and keeping them warm, of course. I have no idea what else you can do, but I'm sure someone on PT will know a few things about the subject. :)

Oh, you better keep them away from your other kitties in case they have an infection!

Can't wait to see pictures of them. All the very best of luck!! :)

It's that secret kitty grapevine - THEY KNOW we love cats, give them nice furrever homes and take good care of them. It's a "burden" that most of us bear oh-so-very willingly!

Can't wait for PICTURES! Welcome to the world, little ones!

The story:
This morning we went to check on a property, kind of old little farm, that has been "occupied" for someone breaking a window, like it happened many times before.
Anyway I decided to go too, while we were inspecting through the house, in one of the rooms there was a matress on the floor covered with a brown blanked with a black spot on it, I decided I wanted to know what was on there. The room was poorly enlightened and should to bent down to check on the black spot...well the rest is history.:)

..to be continued... :p It has been quite and hectic day, and still a lot of thing to do. Find a box or a basked the same size of Magda's heating mad and put on Magda's cage the lizard heating mad. Sisi "the bunny" is waiting for her daily cuddles and the list goes on...

The kitties must have a mother. What do you know about her?

aly
04-21-2004, 04:38 PM
How SWEET!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

The good news is they look like they'll be opening their eyes any day now, so that crucial first week and a half is over. It will still be crucial to feed them right, but just not quite AS much as if they were younger :)

If you have ANY questions at all, don't hesitate to ask me. I've raised lots of newborn kitties and puppies.

If you have a small, clean stuffed animal, you might want to put it in with them so they can cuddle to it like its their mama.

The pictures are so cute. They look healthy! (There must be a mama kitty around there for them to have survived - can you set a live trap?)

I'm sure you're doing a great job with them! :)

OH! So tiny and young!! I wonder also about the mamma? So tiny!!
For Aly and others - do you still do the hot water bottle thing for little babies like this? - to make them warm and feel sort of like a mamma cat?

aly
04-21-2004, 04:52 PM
Yup - I use a little warmer that you heat up in the microwave (then place it under a blanket). I always wrap it TIGHTLY and keep a close eye on the babies to be sure they never wiggle under the blanket and lay on it directly. I'm also careful not to make it too hot - which means I am constantly warming it. I used to use heating pads, but they scare me. I'm just always so paranoid.

(Thats why I use a small stuffed animal to act as mama while they are young. If its too big, it will take them off the heat. Skylar still loves his "mama" stuffy he had when he was a wee one)

OMG! They are sooooo adorable!!
I have to agree that the mamma is around there some where. Will your local shelter loan you a trap or maybe even help you trap her? I'm sure she is looking for her babies and she will soon be having more.
We know you have a lot to do so tell all when you get a chance.

I have bottle fed plenty of kittens and the round the clock chore isn't fun! It would be ideal for the kittens to have their mother to nurse off of. She is no doubt looking for them. Left unspayed she's apt to have at least two more litters before the year is up, and that makes for one calcium depleted cat. Not to mention more kittens that will either grow up wild, or be found by someone else. PLEASE try and find the mom cat and get her spayed at the very least. ;) ;) ;)

she heard you coming and bolted! That's mom trying to do a decoy away from her babies, not abandon them! She must've gone nuts when she came back and found them gone! Are you going to look for her? Her milk will give them naturally immunity to so MANY viruses! As on other threads going right now, see recommendations for trapping. But she may be friendly if you could find her. Start by putting out food? I dunno. I don't grasp really how far you would have to go to find her, i.e., where this property is....?

Most likely you are right, but the cats were inside the house and the window,on the second floor, that she was supposed to go in and out, was going to be "nailed"(?)
so where I should put the kitties for
moma to find them? Very often the "stray persons" who comes to live there have dogs, we know becuase we found doog food inside the house.
Were the kittens safe outside?
The one time rural area has become a little busy since the University is expanding this side and is very, very close to the house and the once quite road, has become a little busy.
And yes, I felt so sorry for the moma, I was like crying wich I didn't do it as I wasn't alone.

Aly , thank you for your inputs :) I have put a stuffed bunny just brand new the size of a cat . The heating mad is junt on level 1 with two towels on it.

One thing I need to know is how stimulate them to pee and poo, do you give them belly rubs? I have heard that
somewhere.

About the moma cat , there are a couple of neighboors I'll ask them if they got a pregnat kitty. As for Animal Control the last time I contacted them we got a kind of "surrealistic" conversation, that I'm not ready to deal with another one of the same kind, really

I got a paper from the vet about timing feeding and the amout of intake milk and other general things.

Any input will be GREATLY apreciated.:)

BTW, they are coming to the office with me.

Oh, they look like they're only a couple of days old!!! Will you try to find the mommy cat at the empty house?

Here's a link that may give you some good information on hand raising kittens: http://www.hdw-inc.com/tinykitten.htm

It's wonderful that you can take them with you while you're at work! :)

And yes, you have to give them belly rubs after they have eaten, otherwise they cannot poop and pee.

As far as I know, you also have to keep them warm since a kitten that young isn't able to hold its own body temperature.

You are doing all the right things, Anna - as I knew you would. ;) These 3 babies are so precious and I'm sure they'll survive with your care. It's so lucky you can bring them along to work, but in a situation like this, it would have been great if you had a cat loving person as a neighbor.

I hope the momma will show up, but don't be surprized if she won't feed them - we had that happen here some years ago, after we had moved them. :( The best thing would be to have her spayed.

I'm so glad you were the one to find them!! :)

Here's a site I hope can answer your questions:

Wellllll, its not exactly their belly that you're supposed to rub :o

Gently massage their "privates" with a warm damp cloth until they go potty. Do this every time after you feed them. I usually hold them over the trash can when I do it so it all will fall in there :o (sometimes there's a LOT).

Don't be worried if they are a bit irregular. The formula will most likely constipate them and/or give them diarrhea. Its a big change in their system to go from mama's milk to the formula, but they'll get used to it! They had their mom's colostrum for at least a week and that first few days is the most crucial for that - so that is really good! They should be just fine.

I feel so bad for the mama cat :( But I would have done the same thing as you.

If you have a portable radio, I like to play quiet classical music for my bottle babies (or sometimes radio talk shows).

You also may want to cover the crate or box they're in with a light sheet, especially when you are travelling with them. That will prevent them from getting a draft.

Sounds like you're doing great - keep it up!! :)

What's happening with finding the mom of the 3 newbies? Any progress? I hope before the window gets nailed shut, all cats are definatly out of the house! they can hide in the tiniest of places! Even in ceilings and walls (there are horror stories!). If there's several cats out there, and if it's possible, you could start feeding on a regular basis and sit in a car nearby to see who comes. (Not every day necessarily, but it would have to be the same time of day so they get to learn what time of day to come around). Create a call so eventually they will associate the call with food. That way, you can keep an eye out for preggies, ill cats, and potentially friendly strays that could be quite adoptable! Probably too late to find mom at this point, though if you do see some cats today or tomorrow (relatively soon), put down a bunch of catnip, the one with the longest nipples is mom (unless there's more than one mom, more than one litter which is entirely possible given the time of year it is!)
And yes, after feeding, gently stroke the genitals with a warm wet cloth (like mama's tongue!). This stimulates them to "go"!
Good luck!

Hi , so far things go smoothly, although they hadn't poop yet and I am a little worried. Looks like is normal to be constipated when changing to formula ( a little relieve there, uf!),they peed though. But their tummys a turning pretty big and I'm affraid they are going to explode.

Thanks Kirsten and Randi for the links they are very helpful. Although one of the sites said you should feed them holding them up and head slightly up too and the other one says the kittens laying flat on your lap. What do you, foster moms think?

Thanks a bunch, Aly, for your help, I'm going to try the portable radio thingy.
Do you know wich is the normal growing rate? I'm weighting them daily.

The gray one was 165 gr, now 170 gr.
The black one was 150 gr, now 155 gr.
The tabby was 170 gr. now 168 gr. he has lost a couple of grammes. Is that normal like human babies? .

I talked to the neighboord, and they have no cats. They said , they see a black cat crossing his property. Could be that one the moma cat? Anyway they said it looked healthy and cared.

aly
04-23-2004, 02:33 AM
When I feed my kittens, I try to position them as closely to the same position they would be if they were nursing from their mama. Just be sure not to feed them on their back. Its best if they are laying flat with their heads up.

The average weight at birth is 100 grams and then they gain about 50-100 grams per week. They seem to be at good weights considering they look around 10-12 days old by sight. There will be small fluctuations in weight. Just be sure the weight loss isn't constant and that it goes back up soon.

I ALWAYS worry about the constipation too, but it always happens. Their little tummies get soooooo big. You can massage the tummy to try to loosen things up in there and then rub the bottom to see if anything comes out - that helps sometimes.

04-23-2004, 07:13 PM
flat out! just like as with a mom! and as posted above. Ånd never head back or upside down cuz they'll aspirate and die. and never pump the bottle to force the formula- again, can aspirate- sounds like they took to the bottle ok though. you feeding every couple of hours? Re: the bellies- they need strongid asap. Get it from the vet. mix it in with the formula. Ask the vet if ok to give now but all kittens are born with round worms which eat their food so they get fat from the worms but are hungry more often cuz worms are eating their food!

QueenScoopalot
04-23-2004, 08:06 PM
Ummm Leslie, Newborns can't be wormed. They should be at least 5 weeks old in order to be wormed. If you may recall Wally & Martha used to blow up like blood gorged ticks during feedings. Sure wish I had good pics of "the ticks".

Yesterday the black one has opened its eyes. :D

For those who raise new born kitties

Can I do something for the kitties to help open theirs eyes?

How do you weight them, as they are growing up. They don't stay still anymore on the scale, I'm using a digital kitchen scale, and the numbers dance up and down.

Oh, T&P mom, if you could see them sleeping together, I went all mushy.

After they are feed , they crowl over me at settle between my shoulder and neck and purr away....:D

Welcome to PTalk lizzielou742.:)

A lot of questions LOL.
Sadly I can't keep them I have six cats already.

I haven't named them yet. I look but can't decide if they are males of females :o

A new little ball of fur came home with me today, too. Luckily, she seems to be able to eat on her own. But there is a big fat cat laying here that I had to adopt about nine years ago when he was only three or four days old. I washed a Visine bottle really well, and fed him canned goat-milk from the grocery store. Had to carry him in his own little condo made from a lunch box so I could feed him ten times a day. Held him up and gently rubbed a warm wet wash cloth under his tail until he relieved himself. Named him Zeeno after the Visine bottle that I still have. Now I use a bottle that had eye drops since it holds more. Before his eyes opened, they got infected, and I put just a drop of hydrogen peroxide in a glass of warm water, and rubbed his little eyes. One day as I washed them, they started to open. That's how an old man became a kitten's mama. Good luck with yours.

What absolute dolls! Now you get to have the privalege of watching the little ones grow up, and actually having a hand in it. Good luck on trying to give them up once you've hand fed them for a few weeks! ;)

They are doing great :D .
I'm almost sure the tabby, now called Tavia and the black one,now Titet, are girls. And the gray , now Tripes, is a boy.

They eat, sleep and play like crazy. Oh,and grow, grow, and then some more.
They go wonderfuly with the rest of the Gang (Ok, forget Koxka:( )

Kim, Tabitha is a darling, have been reading about the earlobesuckling. What we put up with LOL .She looks like my Tavia.

Good luck on trying to give them up once you've hand fed them for a few weeks!

"Sight", I'm heartbroken at the though of it. Ther's not a single day I don't think that I have to part with them.
I swear tha if the prizes of the houses hasn't gone out of control,I would move just to keep them.

So far, one is going to my eldest nefew&girl friend, as soon as they moved to their new house, to keep company to Canica their kitti-kat.

Pictures?...Pictures!

Those pictures are precious!! They looks so healthy and happy.

I imagine it will be hard to give them up. I don't think I could unless I knew I would get to see them regularly.

Awww.....

They do grow so fast, don't they? :(

Koxka, your resident gang really seem to have adopted the little ones. I love the meezer with the little one and the one with all three of them climbing all over surrogate mom (tabby and white). :D

Thanks for the update! :D

How in the world did I miss this? What beautiful, beautiful babies. Giving them up must be so hard. I love them, just looking at them! You've done a great job with them.

I love all your pictures, but the ones where all three kittens are leaning on the grown-up cat as if it was a wall, are just priceless!! :D :D

It has been hard. Bottle feeding three kitties around the clock, thankfully I could bring them at work; Koxka on fluids and going to the vets any other day and Piula getting spayed, ALL at the same week, plus 8 h. work and take care of all the others critters: Iggy, bunny, turtle and fishies hadn' been easy.
From one side (PT)I wasn't doing enough, looks like I should try to trap the moma, didn't know even if was feral or belonged to a irresponsible owner living near where we found "the kids", as we call them now.:D . And on the other side ,my familly, even most of them are animal lovers, they were pressuring me for taken them in my home. They think I have way too much animals.
To sum up I made a depression.:( .Too much going on ....fisical and mentally. :(

But it's all over and I'm so glad we made it , the furries and the skiny one.

Now, we can say we have three happy, healthy, very active kitties with a bunch of lil brothers ready to cuddle, groom and play with :D

Probably my mother will take another one of the kitties, she has lost one of her kitties this week .It make two kitties placed already. And the third , Titet, the black one; will stay at home My partner says she has adopted him.

Let's see if I can post some new pictures tomorrow.

Have a great week
