Two of our cats were adopted, and one is my fiancee's brother's girlfriend's sister's cat Each cat already had names, we just let the names remain the same.

felix was going to be named something majastic like jupiter after the planet or nelson after nelson mandela, but when i got him home he looked so much like a felix i had to change plans. my previous cat halley was named after halley's comet because i got him the year it passed through.

Mimi was named by my daughter's dad. She is very feminine and petite. The name just seemed to fit. We have had her since she was 6 weeks old.
Butter, who has only been with us a short time, is creamy colored, with butterscotch colored ears. Thus, the name "Butter". Someone else mentioned that his name ought to be "Butter Ball" because of his nice round face. You must look at both of them. I'll list the topic so you can flip through and see them.

I fostered a cat who had two cats in my closet on the 4th of July (Independence Day to the non-US folks) so, naturally, they were named Yankee and Doodle. However, my son almost immediately started calling Doodle Boosie, and that kind of stuck, so that was forever her "nickname". They are now at the rainbow bridge, though.

They had a stepbrother that we named Cosmo after Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld. He was an amazingly sweet but goofy cat, and he was soon called anything from Comical to Cosmic. He, too, is at the rainbow bridge.

Almost two years ago, a little blue and cream tabby adopted us, and my son started calling her Peaches, but would not say why (to this day he swears I thought of the name!). About a month later she produced three young'uns. While she was still carrying them, my son said if there was a boy, he would be named Big Mac. I don't know if this was after the sandwich, or the character from "On the Waterfront" or something else, but one of them was a boy. It's ironic he was named before he was even born, because he now weights almost 20 lbs.! He is a tuxedo, as was one of his sisters, who of course got named Cookie, since she was an Oreo cat. But the poor little runt had no name! We finally decided on Pepper, partly because as a brown tabby she kind of has a peppery color, partly because we had to continue the food theme and couldn't think of anything else, and partly because of her fiery little personality.

Have had many more cats over the years, as well as about many fosters, some named and some not, but these are the most recent.

First I must explain that I never liked cats (of course I had never been exposed to them, as I was brought up with only dogs.)

With that said, one morning I woke my son up for school (high school age http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif)and out from under his pillow came a tiny orange tabby cat. It had been bought for his friend's grandmother whose cat had just died. It turns out that she didn't want another cat, so my son smuggled him into the house. The first thing he said was "Please can we keep him? I already have a named picked out." He got his name by way of the spoof British band, Spinal Tap (they have a "mockumentary" out now called This Is Spinal Tap) that my son really liked. One of the band members, Nigel Tufnel, has a ferret named Trevor. The rest is history. Now, almost 8 years later, Trevor is an integral part of our home and our lives.

Andy, my white cat, was found by my mom at a yard sale at the shore. My daughter pleaded with me for him to join our family, and came up with the name Andy because she said he "looked like an Andy." http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Today I can't imagine life without Andy either.

An added thought here....Spencer, I had to smile about Garbo's naming. You said she is afraid of humans and at the same time loves their company. That pretty much describes Gabe (my daughter's ragdoll). Sorry about not including names (my fiancee introduced me to cats, so I may describe things odd.) All cats were adopted, so they already had names.

Our first cat is named Jackson, a Maine Coon. He is middle age, and very tame. He likes catnip but will not take anything offered from the table, not even the treat 'Pounces'. He gets along with the other cats and our dog, Eli (a collie/lab mix, about 60 pounds).

The second cat is Rosie, an American shorthair. Her name is Rosie O'Grady, but we leave off the second part. She seems just out of her teens, and the explorer, into everything. If you let her, she will eat off your plate, she has even tried some of our dog food. She's gets along with Jackson, but doesn't get along with our other cat or our dog.

Cat #3 is the fiancee's brother's girlfriend's sister's cat, named Fluffy, an American longhair. She has been moved around a lot due to some apartments not taking pets, and her being neglected by some owner's friends. She is much older than Jackson. My fiancee and I have talked about it, and we want her to stay with us permanently.

I have pictures of Jackson, Rosie, and Eli, but not yet have one of Fluffy. I soon may put Jackson up for Cat of the Day.

But shortly after we moved to North Carolina this terminally beautiful and delightful Himalayan BEGIN TO MEOW WITH A TWANG! I was in broadcasting, had TV/Radio talk shows and my show was called, The Joyce Rue Hyphen Potter Show...the hyphen included in my name was accented because people would hear "Rue Potter" (my maiden and married names) and wonder what kind of name Ruepotter was. So we just played with the hyphen thing until it just caught on...thus Dennis Bubba Hyphen Potter. My Charlie was named Bad Andy by his previous owner...he was "just a wittle kitty" and would get into lots of trouble!
When she gave him to me (she already had three cats), he was almost seven months old, and not as "bad" anymore, so I said, "you're not Bad Andy, you're Good Charlie".
I also think Charles is a very dignified name, and cats are very dignified animals. The nickname Charlie is just plain cute and suits him to a T. My cat Marius got his name from a series of books that I really enjoy reading. Marius, in the books, is a nobleman from ancient Rome. Marius just looks so regal, and has that exotic look about him. My husband named his cat Scooter, because when we went to pick him up as a kitten, he was just 'scootin' all over the floor! He is so highstrung!

We have fun with the names of the cats that come to the cat rescue where I volunteer. One of my favorite namings was a litter of 3 feral kittens that came in, and we named them Athos, Porthos, and Dartanian (the 3 muskateers). They were little black kittens with white spots on their chest. Rambunctious too! They would spar with any other cat that came in contact with them, so we had to separate them into thier own private living space so they could be socialized! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

My cat Cruella was of course named after the one and only Cruella De Vil because as a kitten she was just cruel to her sister because she was a bit bigger and her sister Lianna was sick. She is a devious cat. Lianna was named after a girl in a book that I was reading. The girl was fragile and sick and it fit because so was she at the time.

In may last year as a single, I adopted a gorgeous blue cat from a shelter...he was so beautiful (and , it turned out, foul tempered) I named him Gandalf the Grey after the great Wizard in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. My landlady kicked Gandy out and a wonderful friend agreed to keep him for me. Turns out I had to marry said friend to get my cat back! In the next 36 years, we have had many cats...all but one given names from Tolkien. They work great, elegant sounding names that suggest great nicknames. My favorite name may have been Glorfindel, a great Elven warrior in the trilogy, whose nickname was "Glorf." Everyone thought "Glorf" was a great name for a cat. Our last 8 or 9 cats have been Abyssinians, so the elegant names are appropriate. The current crop includes Eowyn (Wynki); Peregrin Took, the Thane (Pippin or just Pip), and Legolas (Li'l Guy.)

Off the subject I know, but her name is Lynn (on motorcycle BBS she is RoLynn Chicane), and her youngest, also living here, is Chas (short for Charles, only his great-grandmother calls him Charles).
Living with her ex- is Chris her other son, Chrystal her other cat, and Sassie the dog. We left Chystal there because she was tested with FIV. Chrystal is about 8 now, tested positive for FIV about 5-6 years ago. We thought about retesting her, but she is up in age and could not handle the stress of a move anyway.

We chose the name Pesto for our little girl because we wanted something that was not a common animal name, but we also didn't want something human, or something that was neither but also sounded stupid as an animal name. I wrote out a list of whatever came to my head (a lot of spices made the list)but Pesto was the only one my husband agreed with. Everyone loves her name.

I don't like naming my cats human names, either, for some reason that I can't even explain. Some human names are okay, like Charlie and Mickey and such, but even then those are generally human nicknames. My mom believes only in human names for her cats, which is fine if that's what you like, but I for some reason have trouble getting my tongue around such fine noble names as "Gordon" and "Michael" when they are being applied to a feline! But to each his own, I know, and I don't doubt that there are many people who laugh in scorn when they hear me talk about my "Biggle Wiggle Macka Jig" or, as he's otherwise known, "Big Mac".

I have never named a cat, they all were adoptions and thus had names. But thinking about it, I would tend to name them with human names. In my mind, a cat named Jackson seems easier to give respect, than a cat named Fluffy.

I love this topic! When I was a child, every time we got a new pet, my dad would say to tease me, "Let's call him Jackson!" I always thought this was such an awful name, I wanted a real "pet" name. Now that I'm grown up, I would love to have a pet named Jackson, which would bring my dad's memory back to me, but, my three most recent cats have all been girls! So Fuzzy317, I'll let you know when I get my long awaited Jackson - the day WILL come!

I'm a "real name" fan, too. Sadie was Smudge when we adopted her, but I thought this was more a boy's name, and also I do like names to end in the "-ie" sound.

My male cat is called Gigio. Personally I don't like the name, it's the name of a puppet - which happens to be a mouse ... not very dignified for a cat! It was either my father or my sister who gave him that name when we found him almost 18 years ago. I guess it's a little too late for a change...

I have a female cat called Maya. She was found by a fried on my sister and since my other cat just passed away and I was looking for a companion for Gigio. The day I brought her home my sisters came over and we started to try a whole bunch of names on her, the poor thing must have thought we were demented.

The last addition to the household is a female cat called Prema. Strictly speaking she was supposed to be my sister's cat. My sister and her other two were staying with me when Prema was adopted but she lost all rights to her after ten minutes. Prema, which in Sanskrit means love, was given that name so that it would go with the names of the other two (Darma and Rama - my sister names all her cats after Hindu Gods and Goddesses).

With Kelly it was different. When I picked both (Kelly & Simon) up at the SPCA here in Zurich, Kelly was sitting there and cleaning herself but she was sitting in such an odd way that it looked like some Hollywood actress was in pose. I quickly checked who my favourite actress was. My first thought was Grace Kelly but Grace? Where as Kelly sounded great. I just said Kelly aloud and checked her reaction and there it was. She looked at me with her beautiful eyes and I knew Kelly would be Kelly.

Dutchess - because she "was." Dutchess, now living across the Rainbow Bridge was my first dog - a miniature, all black, poodle. My stepmother was a "backyard" breeder. However, the papers required by the American Kennel Club were not in order, so we ended up with a whole litter of poodles. Dutchess became my dearest little friend.

Sugar was a gift. At first, I didn't like the name that he came with. But he was a long haired Turkish Angora - pure white. And soon I realized that the name suited him perfectly. Sugar is across the Rainbow Bridge as well, but he was my first and only cat for eighteen years.

Within two months of losing Sugar we went out to adopt another cat. My husband selected Patches - a Calico. Patches is now sixteen and she has been a Prima Donna from the day we brought her home. She also came with her name.

It was so painful losing Sugar that I vowed I would never be a one cat home again. I wanted another cat to be a companion to Patches. And just like "Magic" he showed up. The dearest all black long haired kitty that is now also at the Rainbow Bridge. When I first took him to the vet he wanted to know if I had brought him in for his shoulder problem. I didn't have a clue, and the vet was referring to Magic Johnson's shoulder injury.

And last but certainly not the least, we have Rascal. Rascal just showed up about a year and a half ago. He is my ginger boy and he has attitude!! I gave him that name because he truly is a little rascal. He loves to hide behind doors and pounce on Patches. He also made it quite clear - I am going to live with you!!!! And I am in charge!! He was absolutely right on both counts.

Logan - regarding Mimi (what a pretty baby):we have "Wispurr Ann" who looks VERY much like Mimi. She was a stray, but in cat books she totally resembles a Norweigan Forest Cat. What do you think?

"Wispurr" is 6 yrs old and I thought up her name (it took 3 days) since she has all the wisps of white on her chest and constantly purred from day 1! Our other kitty babies are: "Snuggles"(17), named by our son when he was 5 - after the Snuggle fabric softener bear,"Wilbur"(13), who was named at the shelter, but whose name fits as he is big, floppy & such a love, and "Indiana Jones"(8) aka "Indy", named by our son after the movie - quite appropriate as he is certainly always into everything!

Fuzzy and I weren't together when we tried that "make 'em stronger by implying something with the name" thing. Even though this is the cat board, I'll share this one.

I bought a female beagle from a pet store. She was "older" (she's about 12-15 years old now) and had been rescued from a puppy mill, where she'd been a breeder. The dog was so terrified about being in the pet store, I asked the owner to let her come home with me for some rehab and socialization. Once we got her home and realized she had no name, we decided to try to "pump" her up with one. We named her Sassee. When we realized how bad off she was (had been extremely abused), I bought her rather than send her back to that environment (where no one would want her anyway).

Unfortunatly it's never stuck, but she's gotten better. For the first 3-4 years she lived with us we had to drag her out from under a sofa/day bed to take her out to the bathroom and had to feed her under there. After 7 years she's finally to the point where you have better than even odds on her coming when called. But, she's happy. She lives with my ex and older son (with my cat Crystal who has FIP, not FIV as Fuzzy said - he's still new at this cat diseases thing...).

Zezu got his name from: partly because of the cute leemer named Zaboo from the kids tv show 'zaboomafoo'. We love that little guy. Also, My girlfriends last name begins with Z and I called her Zezu sometimes. Now our little cat is named Zezu.

My calaco female cat is named Mushroom. I looked into her face when I took her from a shelter and sort of asked her what her name should be. I thought of Mutt because she's funny looking and has three colors of fur running through her. Mutt seemed to harsh for her and then Mushroom came into my head and it completely suited her face. She looks like a cat that should be named Mushroom. My friends laugh when I tell them her name but they think she looks like a Mushroom. Its funny because I hate mushrooms to eat. I never eat them.

My gray and white cat, Gonzo is named after the muppet character. He is the very first pet that I got. He is 10 years old now and still acts like a kitten.

My Noisette (French for Hazelnut)is gray... but the morning she found us (in October) on our doorstep was a small bunch of hazelnuts...the odd thing is that we live in the middle of the city without an hazelnut tree in sight!? A couple of hours later, there she was... a little kitten, scared and dirty and she had hazel eyes!! As if Mother Nature had found a way to prepare us... Joy!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
