And I need help on what I am going to choose. I'm looking at the Nikon Coolpix 4300 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25507). (Same kind of camera as catnapper.)

I need it to be durable. My Kodak Easyshare DX4330 is very fragile.

The price range doesn't matter. I just want a good camera.

Needs to have optical zoom.

Please tell me what you think, what kind I should get, and some tips.

Thank you!

Hey, and just think-- when I get a new digital camera, I will take extra pictures.

I told you what I thought. :p Get a CANON.
They came out with the Powershot A-80. I have the A-70, and it's a great camera.

The A-80 has...
-4.0 MegaPixels
-3.0 X Optical Zoom

I've found them to be very durable. I haven't had a problem with mine. :)

HERE'S (http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/a80/) a site with more info.

Nathan and I have the Canon A70. I dropped ours at work onto a tile floor, cracked and dented the case and now it won't fit together properly, but it still worked and there hasn't been any damage to the pictures or the screen. After I got over the nausea of breaking our camera, I realised it is pretty durable :p I would definatly say get a Canon :)

Naomi,
I did the same thing with my camera. It got dropped, and it cracked and won't fit together properly. There are buttons on the top, and I can barely press them down. I think I may get it fixed, so my mom can have her own.

Thanks, I will be looking into the Canon. :)

Does the Canon take a long time to take a picture? Does it take good action shots? I was trying to take some pictures of Prince going on his agility course, but it takes the pictures so slowly, so by the time it took the picture, he was already through that obsticle.

The canons seem to be a popular choice but mine started flickering a couple weeks ago. It went from small flickers to completely ruining photos. I looked it up and apparently, it's a pretty common problem with the A60's and A70's. So, that's just something to keep in mind. The extended warranty should cover it though (as long as you don't drop yours).

It does seem to take longer when you use the flash but there's a mode you can set it on so it takes pictures repeatedly. I use this when the boys take a bath and shake..I always catch the goofy pics this way. And for action shots, they come out pretty clear. As long as there's sufficient lighting, they come out really nicely. I have some of Kai jumping that came out clear enough to get printed out at a photo lab.

Well, you know my vote for the Nikon:D I fogot to mention that I'm a klutz. I have droped it several times and just the other day spilled a glass of juice on it.

I also finally figured out how to make good videos with it... those would be great for the agility courses.

When you dropped it, spilled juice on it, have you noticed any problems? Does this kind of camera have the setting that takes pictures repeatedly?

binka_nugget- The setting that takes pictures repeatedly sound slike a nice thing to have.

I wonder if my camera has that. *scratches head*

Yes, it does have a continuous setting. According to the handbook, it "records pitcures at a rate of about 4 frames every 3 seconds while shutter release button is being held down."

I have not had any problems. I DID pick it up the moment the glass tipped over and wrapped it in a terry cloth towel before the juice had a chance to works its way into the camera... but no problems at all. I am a serious klutz... I keep needing to replace my cell phone cover because I drop it so often. The camera shows no signs of "illness" from being dropped.

The only problem I've had was the USB port, and Nikon replaced the cord itself (that was what was faulty.)

Another vote for the Canon.

I take action shots of Nala all the time, and she's pretty darn fast. There's only been a few pictures i've missed.

Thanks for the information and opinions. :)

I am looking at Nikon CoolPix 4500 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25513#) right now.

I am still not sure what I am going to get. I am going to shop for a while before I make a decision, and will probably go to a store where I can actually hold the cameras to see what they feel like. :)

That's the same kind I have. You're right on it being fragile. After a day taking pics up in the mountains (it was cold and snowing lightly) it was all screwed up...I didn't drop it or anything. I had to send it in to be fixed. Now the zoom won't work, I don't know what I did to cause that.

I have a Sony Cybershot with 2 Megapixels. Its an excellent camera and takes great pics. I wish its video feature came with sound though........that's one thing its lacking, but all of the newer Sony's I've seen do make videos with sound. We've had this camera for over 2 years and it hasn't given us any problems at all. I love our camera, though we do plan on upgrading sometime soon, probably to another Sony but a better/upgraded version. Good luck!

LOL, I quoted myself. :p

This would have been the perfect camera, but the viewfinder has to come out. I just know I would break it off or something. Ugh. It would have been perfect. Now I am looking again.

I have been looking some more, and I think I have found the perfect one.

Fugi FinePix S7000 (http://web.ask.com/redir?bpg=http%3a%2f%2fweb.ask.com%2fweb%3fq%3dFuj i%2bFinePix%2bS7000%26o%3d0%26page%3d1&q=Fuji+FinePix+S7000&u=http%3a%2f%2ftm.wc.ask.com%2fr%3ft%3dan%26s%3dpg %26uid%3d0164C1F0A4424E404%26sid%3d156D825CA1C1E17 04%26qid%3d407B0FC7406B974FBFC518EEA9D6D96D%26io%3 d1%26sv%3dza5cb0de6%26o%3d0%26ask%3dFuji%2bFinePix %2bS7000%26uip%3dce08b8d4%26en%3dte%26eo%3d-100%26pt%3dFuji%2bFinepix%2bS7000%2bat%2bHilton%2b Photographic%2bOnline%2bStore%26ac%3d10%26qs%3d0%2 6pg%3d1%26ep%3d1%26te_par%3d140%26te_id%3d%26u%3dh ttp%3a%2f%2fwww.hiltonphoto.co.uk%2fproducts%2fdet ails%2f169.html&s=pg&bu=http%3a%2f%2fwww.hiltonphoto.co.uk%2fproducts%2 fdetails%2f169.html&qte=4&o=0)

I'm still looking up information, trying to find if there is a flaw. :D

Do you see anything that may be a hassle? Any comments? Suggestions?

I've been told that supposedly, Fuji is the worst quality brand of camera. My friend has one and she says it's okay, but not the best you can have. :)

Yeah, my manual is a Fugi... run while you can. It got me through my collee photography class but it was the worst camera in the class. I can't see how they'd have upgraded workmanship for their digital line.

Oh, my laptop is also a Fugi... my CD Rom has been broken since basically day one. It can't get it fixed... everything is uploaded by floppy.

I disagree!

My first camera was a Fuji Film Finepix 1300.
It was great, not as great as my Canon of course, but it took wonderful pictures and it was VERY user friendly.

So, you think with an advanced version, it could be even better?

I really want to get a camera but, (as you can tell from what I have been looking at) I want a more durable camera. The Canon reminds me a lot (the smaller ones) of my Kodak. I would go to a bigger version, but can't find one that would fit my needs. :)

Im also researching, as Im getting a digi in May, for my Birthday. I think I am going with a canon though, hopefully an A80, but Im not sure, because first I'd need to find one and second I'd need to get enough money for my birthday ;)

Good Luck!

If you buy from Costco or www.costco.com you can return them if they aren't what you want. I had the Fuji s7000. It has a lot of CA, which is purple fringing, like around tree branches against a nice blue sky. I didn't like that you have to tell the flash to pop up. I wanted it to pop up when needed. I had the Canon G5, and it was better. But had CA also. Both can take all the pic's in row that you want, till the card is full. the s700 is a nice camera and now $499.00 The G5 is still like $550.00. These are Costco price only. You may find a better deal. I just like the return policy of Costco.
We have now setteled on the Canon s400 and Canon 300d. We wanted a big camera and a pocket one.
I have pics from all these cameras if you want to compair. The G5 was better than the s7000. But the Fuji is more user friendly and has more features that I liked.

Wow Costco has a good price!!

I looked at the staples.com website(the Canadian one for my area), we have one of them close to here and the Canon Powershot A80 is $549.95

Is the Powershot 870 much different?

Do you mean is the A-80 much different than the A-70?

The A-80 has more megapixels (4.0) while the A-70 has 3.2 megapixels. With the A-80, you could record videos of up to three minutes with sound, and I believe with the A-70 you could record between 30 seconds - 1 minute with sound.

Here's some information/prices on the A-70 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008OE5G/102-9109323-5646524?v=glance)

My camera is a Sony Cybershot (3.3 megapixels). Model is DSC-S75. I'm sure there are more updated models of it now, I've had this one a couple years.

I'm sure you've seen plenty of my pictures to get an idea of the quality. It's easy to get an action shot, I just press the button halfway so it's focused and then snap fast as soon as a dog runs by, or try to. :p

My most recent favorite action shots are these:

I believe Christiansmommy has the same camera.

Good luck, I'm sure there are a lot of nice cameras out there. This one is my first digital and I'm quite pleased with it.

The Canon S-400 is just a bit more expensive, but has a metal body and is a lot more durable. It's also a lot smaller, which some people like, other don't. But unlike the A-80, you can't change lenses.
