What in the world is a "swamp cooler" that you speak of? I never heard of anything by that name!

i am also wondering what a swamp cooler is,and what you might use it for,besides cooling a swamp,which doesnt make much sense

I think they were referring to evaporative cooling.

That's what people around here refer to a Swamp Cooler as.
