LINCOLN, Calif. -- Geese can leave behind a real mess on a golf course, so one area course is fighting back by employing it's own full-time goose chaser.

Abe is a dog whose responsibility it is to keep the water fowl in the water and their mess off the course at Lincoln Hills.

"Sometimes we're not the best golfers, so if you scull the ball ... you don't want to get a birdie the bad way," golfer Dick Jurgens said.

On a typical day, Abe rides around in a golf cart on the lookout for geese.

"He sits in the cart and doesn't move ... and all of sudden he sees those geese and he's off like a rocket," golfer Jerry Austin said.

The dog is compensated for his work.

"Abe gets paid housing and meals ... and an occasional chew toy," the Lincoln Hills superintendent said.

And for some golfers, Abe is a life-saver.

"I am terrified of birds, so, any time there are any birds around I have to have one of my playing partners come and protect me ... Abe is my hero," golfer Elaine Hanson said.

Abe is a 4-year-old border collie. He's trained only to chase, not attack, the geese.
