View Full Version : I/we don't have that here!!!!

I have an idea for a thread.......

I am just tossing this out to see if it is a good idea.....

Miss Meow has just asked about ranch dressing again......It's not her fault....It's us rude Americans keeping all the good stuff to ourselves..

But my question is...
Would anyone be interested in particpating in a
Human/Pet Treat Exchange?????

There are so many great foods out there (We have to limit this to powdered/freeze dried or boxed non perishables).

My idea is to begin a package with a food item that someone is interested in..In the package would be a notebook where you can record your thoughts, paste a pic of you or you cats enjoying your treats and ????

It would be sent to one person at a time and if you know of something that you are interested in you can post a message about it.....

I know that some people have shown an interest in a vitamin paste that is available in Europe...Ranch dressing in Oz.....

Thoughts???

That sounds interesting!
So...it would be like a chain letter-except with food?!

So say I want cheez its, someonewould send me cheez its and i would send a picture of me eating them and something that someone else want and that they dont have and hey`d do the same thing as I did?

Is that right?

lbaker
03-10-2004, 07:42 PM
ewww, you actually WANT Cheez-its? How about Velveeta? ewww Good for fur-kid pills maybe. Want American? How about Scrapple? But don't send back Haggis please. Uh Oh, may be getting trouble here... again. DANG! Oh Richard, you get me in soooo much trouble when I'm in a weird mood

What an interesting idea!!! My not sure how all the logistics may work out...running out of something as it is passed out, long delays between stops, as life sometimes get busy...but definatly worth thinking about!!

We can get TastyKakes and fresh-from-the-factory Hershey's chocolate... believe me, there is a huge difference when its fresh:D We also can get honest-to-goodness Amish Shoofly pie.

I am addicted to tea - both hot and iced - and have always wondered what real English tea tastes like.

My husband wants to know how someone from Scotland could send fresh fish and chips... complete with newspaper.:) He had some when stationed over there in the Navy and would love more.

Miss Meow

Sounds like fun!

I am drooling over the memories of Nomilynn's Candian dill pickle chips right now! :)

This could be a goer, especially if we use lighter items. The postage on cans and big jars adds up very quickly.

Ugh, who mentioned haggis? Can I not pair up with you please? :D ;)

I don't have to eat the pet treats, do I? ;)

Nomilynn

I need Amy to send me some apple beer from Utah :p

Catnapper - I would be happy to send you some Good Host Iced Tea. It tastes nothing like regular tea.. it's WAY better. I could also send you some Murchies Tea, which is the VERY best and the only kind the Queen will drink when she visits Victoria (I don't know if that's true, but it sounds good :p)

I had one bite of Haggis when I was in Scotland - it wasn't bad. I was visiting my former boss and his wife, and we went out to eat - I think she got haggis purposefully so I could try a bite! :) Can't think of anything from some other part of the world I'm particularly hanking for, but it's just begun maple season here - there will be maple sugar candy available in stores a little while, but it's only for a little while, too! What with Fedex and all the Just-in-time economic forces at work, and iving in an ethnically mixed urban-ish area, I have a wide varety of food choices available!

RICHARD
03-11-2004, 02:28 PM
lol,

The basic premise is a food and a animal treat...
something small and not too heavy....

I was thinking requests would be neat, but the tea sounded like a good idea..

OR,

We could start the thread and just have people sign up for it in turn......The treats would be a mystery...That would be fun....candy, like Karen's
maple sugar candies sound great!!!!

More thoughts??

Miss Meow

Sounds fun to me :)

How about someone mentions a food they like or haven't tried, and someone responds that they can do it? They do a swap.

So, for example, I could send PJ's Mom some Vegemite (you sick puppy ;)) and she could send me something.

Surprises could be fun too. Someone could say they're a chocoholic, and someone else sends them a surprise pack of local goodies :)

etc etc

Cincy'sMom
03-11-2004, 04:07 PM
I think it sounds like fun, but I do think a one on one swap, or a swap like the gift exchange is done would work best. I may have misread, but I thought the original idea was to have the same material continously circulate, and that was where i wasn;'t sure they logistics would work out...

We have lots of local Ohio stuff that I'm not sure can be purchased other places...Tony Pacos (made famous by Klinger on MASH), Dietsch's chocolate, Skyline Chili.....

RICHARD
03-11-2004, 05:39 PM
lolololol,

I am sorry, I tells jokes better than explain concepts....

The first plan would be to start with a package... example, tea and a small pack of animal treats......sent with a spiral bound book....

The recipient would enjoy their treats and send it to the NEXT person with a different set of treats in the package.....after recording a note or a picture of them or the pets enjoying the treat....

That way the cost is kept small, the package is kept moving and we all get a chance to experience different things......

Now if there might be something that someone hears about and is interested in they could PM or make arrangements to make a swap outside the project.

That way we can keep the shipping costs down and the notebook going.......

CM,

The original PT Gift swap is a good idea...I was just looking for a twist on that project, something that people would look forward to and by keeping it low cost and low tech a little bit of fun for the people in the 'string'..

I like the idea of this, I just hope, if it works that everyone does their part, it would only take one person to mess the whole thing up. :( It would be fun to see how many states, countrys this one package goes to.

One ? , what happens to the note book once it reaches the last person?

Hey, that I can do...;) Course it only comes in either glass bottles or cans, so I hope it would break or explode!

I may have to get some more interesting Canadian chips. ;) I've only found one brand of dill pickle chips that compares, the rest are not very good!

If anyone likes Hot Cocoa, there's a great brand of gormet hot cocoa that's made in Utah, Stephen's.

Pink/fry sauce is the only other thing I can think of...hmm...Idaho Spuds candy bar too. Nothing very exciting here!

My brother gave me some chocolate from Switzerland sometime, I'd love some more of that! mmmmm

What do we do with the spiral notebook? Why put it on display at Thursday's of course! We could also send it along to a few of the PetTalkMeetings for others to sign and enjoy! Maybe? My Maryland is most famous for crabcakes but they don't ship well. Lots of other goodies though.... surprizes are F-U-N :D There was a book that was getting passed around not long ago (I last loaned to WolfLady at the LA bar-b-que) that everybody signed before passing it along again. It was called "Pack of Two". WolfLady, do you still have it or have you handed off?

I love this idea and have been sitting on the edge of my seat ever since I heard I could possibly get authentic English Tea.

I honestly don't know what I could send... I live in an area where there's a lot of interesting things. I can't tell you how many times a factory or store here has been shown on the Food Network on one of their shows as a "place to be"

Richard sign me up for The world famous wild huckleberry treats from Glacier Park.
We have just about any thing you can imagine chocolates , bbq sause , honey, and not ediable but soaps.
This sounds like a Flat Jack type of thing, maybe we could each send along a pic of our crews along with it.
sounds like lot of fun. you could make the list and e-mail it to each person as we do for X-mas cards. that would make the sending list easier for every one.

That sounds like a good idea.

I was thinking that maybe when the whole thing is over with, the book should be sent to Karen and Paul as the founders of P.T. Just for them to have as a "legacy" of P.T. and all the people they brought toghter. Just a thought. It just seem someone special should have the final book.

After further review.....I think that we can run this this way....

Since it will take too long to circulate a notebook, Maybe we can just have people pair off with their food requests...That way everyone gets instant gratification and everyone gets what they want and we can post our thoughts immediately.

If you crave something, or can fill someone's order.......let the person know and make arrangements!

Anyone from Tennessee??

------------------------

Felicia's Mom,

I am sorry about the confusion...I wanted to start this out as a chain letter but...........

I think that the best way to do this is post something that you like, want to share or think that you would like to have sent to you....

I know that certain requests can't be filled because of locale, weight, or availibility...
But there are some things- chips, small canned foods, small food items that can shipped without fear of breakage, spoiling, etc....not everyone's wish will be filled and not everyone's offer will be taken up.

But I think if we all keep posting and looking at what there is to be offered, we can make this work!

It will just take some time, effort and a little work on everyone's part!!!

I think about 15-20 bucks should just about do it.
and a 2-3 pound limit (1-1.5 kilos) should be fine.

Corinna

OH MY, HOORAY I just thought of something rather local that would be perfect for anyone that likes home-made caramels!! Valati's Caramels come in vanilla or chocolate, with or without nuts, chewy or hard (the hard aren't really hard, they sort of crumble in your mouth and are a personal favorite of mine). They also come in a mixed box, a bit of everything. Oh joy, oh rapture... just the very thought makes my eyes glaze over ;)

I've been wracking my brain, and all I can come up with is the following:
*Zerbee's burnt potato chips (I am not a chip kinda gal but LOVE these.)
*Dieffendorf's potato chips (my hubby's friends in South Carolina devour these.)
*Unique pretzels (these are very yummy hard pretzels and come in all sorts of different flavors and the traitional flavor)

I'd love to send an authentic Philly cheese steak but they wouldn't ship too well;)

OK, here goes.... I would love some realllllly good, somewhat unique B-B-Q sauce (meaning not your garden variety chain grocery store stuff you see) now that it's gittin to be spring and cookout season. I have amazing caramels to pass along. Heinz57_79 - you like caramels, have you anything to trade with someone that could get me some BBQ sauce? Or is this not the way it's going to work  I'm confuzzled....

Laurie,

There is a very unique BBQ chain in Texas (and 2 in NM). They sell sauce and I'd be happy to get you some if you're interested.

Check out their website http://www.rudys.com/index.html

It is quite an experience to go there - and its something I can't explain. You'd have to be there :D

Aly that sounds wonderful!! Now what would you like? If I can't get it maybe I can trade caramels for something for you. Whatever, it's a great excuse for me to send a little surprise for Lolly and Reese ;)

Nicole - Sounds like a deal! My dad loved the licorice :) I can't wait to be able to send him more. Prepare for pickleness! ;)

Do you want to sample any other flavours? Want to try ketchup? Salt and Vinegar? Let me know!! :D

I haven't posted for a while, but I am still interested. I want to send a food product common here, but not in other parts of the country/world. That is hard to do because I have always lived here.

On Saturday I plan to look for jams, candies and other items. I will post them when I get home.

I could send a box of cereal.

I can send kolaches, fresh from our Czech bakery.

Also jams and spreads including:
strawberry
strawberry/rhubarb
raspberry
gooseberry

Horseradish

(there is more but I am at work and the list is home).

I was going to a Maid Rite last Saturday. Instead I went to see about the kolaches.

As far as what I would like to try:
1. Cheddar cheese from England. or any cheese that ships well.
2 powdered coffee/cocoa mix.

Nomilynn:

I like mocha coffee. Actually I like them all, as long as it can be made by putting some in a cup and adding hot water.
International Coffees and some made by Foldgers are sold around here.

Kolaches are a pastrey, a round bun. The top center is indented, and filled with a jamlike substance.

I wanted something that wasn't common everywhere. They are made in our Czech Bakery. The Czech spelling is kolace.

I'm not sure what everyone may want from Florida. Let me know if you're interested in something. I'm from here, so I don't always think of things only we have.

Valerie's idea of Citrus candy is good..I might have to come visit you and get some. :) Or have you bring some at the next meeting. :)

I can send citrus, salt water taffy(but I'm sure there's other places to get it), and there's bunch of stuff at the shops near the beach. I can't think of them all! I'll have to go Friday and make a list. :)

Also, I know this is food related, but if someone thinks of something they want from Florida (Tampa Bay/Clearwater area specifically) that's not food related just PM me. :)

I don't know if people are still active in this thread, but I live in Japan and can get all sorts of interesting drinks and candies. I happen to LOVE pocky and toppo- Pocky is like a little light pretzel stick dipped in chocolate or maple or strawberry flavored stuff and Toppo is the same pretzel type thing, except the flavoring is in the middle. I think Toppo also comes in hazelnut, but I'm not sure.. Authentic Japanese sushi wouldn't ship well, would it  If there is anything anyone wants to try let me know and I'll try my best:) Would it be a good idea to start this over in a new thread? this one is soooo long.

oh yeah, I know that the Seiyu (walmart owned store over here) has lots of different types of cat treats, but all of the lettering is in Kanji,so I can't make heads or tails of what is actually IN the treats. Anyone feeling lucky and want to try:D

I finally had to admit to her that I didn't know....I only know some words German!!

The heart treats have salmon in them. They are Filou's favorites. The cat mint treats are good for playing alos because they are little round balls. The vitamin paste is something most cats here are crazy about. If F+T get it they look as if they were drinking from a bottle with Tigris having the double lick frequency:D

I am now waiting for Eddie to arrive here! I have 2 nawtee boys, so I can easily deal with a third:D

After careful consideration, I have to say NO! to your request of Sadie (and the other two aren't options either!)

I am sorry I have not replied sooner......

It's been a goofy week and a half!

CORRINA!

OH MY GOD.

I have been dragging my feet about sending you just 'bread' - Now I must out-do your package..

I received some jam, some soap and the cutest bear on a leash!!!

The jam I understood, the soap, I needed (God do I smell THAT bad???) The bear made me laugh....I had a close encounter with a bear a few years ago that left me pretty shaken for a week afterwards....

Your generousity is overwhelming....

What I need to know is if you own a bread maker or make your own hand made bread????

----------------------------------

P.S.

The "terrorist" packages are on their way once again.....

I sent Miss Meow and Barbara their packages.... a package of MM's ranch dressing sprung a leak......

They were went back and I re wrapped them and they are on their way!!!!

Please excuse me being three months late, but ...

Blustang24, I can send you a package with some the stuff you mentioned if you want to send me your address.

Dukedogsmom - Do you really like Irn Bru? I can probably find some in plastic bottles that would ship better than a can, if you want to give me your address.

I love Irn Bru! I would really appreciate that. What would you like in return? The citrus candy is wonderful and it's freshly made every day. That will give me a good excuse to go there. They have samples out all of the time. If you're interested, I can tell you what all flavors they have.

Richard, after I came back from the US, your package was here (I tried to wrap this information into my last haiku but it looks as if it didn't come over:( ).

The boys are so happy. They want Temptations not just as a snack but for regular dinner:)

Thanks for the hot sauce as well. This will help me to spit fire from time to time:D

There's all kinds of flavors. They don't have a website. I was going to have you go look. I'll name a few and get a brochure on my days off. Key Lime is one of my favorites. There's orange with pecans on top, tangerine, honey bell tangelo(have a tree in back yard of that one) pink grapefruit. All those listed are the jelled kind. There are also s ome candies that are hard but kind of creamy. Peppermint(very good) lime, something with pretzels in it. There's also chocolate covered orange peel. It's to die for. And there's regular candied orange peel. Maybe I'll just send you a sampler. But, tell me your favorites because I can't get them all for you :p

I never did send out the maple candy, my apologies to everyone. It was a weird spring, and my "soyrce" didn't have any, and then neither did the replacement "source" - but I'm GONNA find and send some out. I have another recently-located potential source ...
