I recently subscribed to the Whole Dog Journal.
And for my subscription they sent me their WDJ Top Dog foods for Total Wellness. And I found out some very interesting things and had some surprises!!!
A lot of the foods they list I had never heard of.
*whole fresh meat is a wonderful healthy food for dogs but is also contains a lot of water, and the extra weight of that moisture usually boosts the fresh meat to the top of the list of ingredients (which by law, are listed in order of their weight contribution to the food). If a list of ingredients begins with whole chicken, followed by 3 or more grains and no other meat proteins, it's likely that the food contains WAY more grain then meat.
....... BTW, dry foods CAN'T contain more thean about 50% percent meat or other animal products; any more than that, and the machinery that mixes and extrudes the kibble gets gummed up.
I should also add that they advocate NOT feeding the same kind of food to your dog for its whole life. That encourages allergies to other foods to develop.
Here is the List of the WDJ New Top Dry foods
Artemis Natural 6 Mix www.artemispetfood.com
Bench and Field Holistic Natural Canine Formula www.benchandfield.com

Abady Stress and Maintenance Formula
APD Lamb Meal and Rice
Beneful(Nestle Purina PetCare) they say that nothing redeems this food in their opinion with its dried peas and carrots and two types of sweeteners and artificial colors

(this one shocked me!! I used to feed this!) [i]lamb meal, brewer's rice. rice flour, rice gluten. poultry fat, brewer's dried yeast, powdered cellulose, potassium chloride, salt
Waltham Lamb Meal and Rice
They basically don't like anything that contains by products, animal fat. artificial perservatives, and digest (which is worst of all, by product, which has been treated with heat and water to create a slurry).
Many more to post about.........

Thanks for the list Staci!!

I'm doing a lot of research right now into switching my dog's food--Kito has a sensitive stomach, and he eats Sensible Choice right now, but it's chicken and rice--I think California Natural would be best for him, based on what I have read.
As far as the other 3 go, I had some samples of Canidae--Abbey and Riley gobbled it up, but Jada wouldn't eat it. Kito even ate it when I gave it the inu test.
Jada's become my picky eater, I guess, because she won't eat the sensible choice either.

I really, really want to try the Chicken Soup foods, but no one near here carries them--I may have my mother in law pick up a bag in Allentown and bring it when she comes to visit, to see if they like it, then I would have to order it online.

Sorry for the rambling.......

Thank you for all of the information!!!

Does the site say anything about homemade diets? Just curious!

Emily, not sure if you've seen this.. it's a list of all the retailers that carry the chicken soup foods in Pennsylvania.

http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/dealerlocator1.asp?state=PA

This food seems really popular with the picky ones. Kai's the pickiest eater I've ever seen but after 4 months of feeding Chicken soup, he's still gobbling it up. Both of my boys love it.

In clarification of the last list:
This article is confined to a discussion of so called "premium" dog foods, a classification we've established that includes those foods that are priced at $1 per pound and up, and supposedly contain ingredients that surpass in quality the lower priced brands. Our analysis found that there are BIG differences in the premium category. High prices don't neccessarily mean high nutritional value. And some so called 'premium' vendors still use artificial preservatives and coloring.
Their 3 top pics in this category was California Natural, Flint River and PetGuard Lifespan.

Thanks!
I have seen that before, and upon looking at it again, the closest one would be in Tyrone, PA, which isn't too far from here--probably a half hour or so. I work with a girl who lives there, maybe she could pick it up for me--I'll have to talk to her on Tuesday when I see her.
