Dog drives milk float into pensioner

A pensioner is being treated in hospital after he was hit by a milk float driven by a dog.

Merseyside Police said the accident happened after a dog jumped on to the accelerator of the vehicle in Derwent Road, in the Meols are of Wirral.

It is thought the animal had been travelling in the cab of the milk float at the time.

The milk float crashed into a lamppost after hitting the pensioner.

A spokesman for Merseyside Ambulance Service said: "A 75-year-old man was taken to hospital suffering from a grazed knee following the incident."

Monty the black labrador also suffered injuries to his paw in the accident and was taken to a local vet for treatment.

Norman Harrison, managing director of Morton's Dairies, which runs the milk round, denied that Monty had caused the accident.

He said: "The milkman was doing his rounds with his dog, as he has done for years.

"The dog is something of a celebrity and all the neighbours pop out and feed him titbits.

"The milkman was at a door when a local man got into the cab of the milk float and tried to feed him. As he was doing this he accidentally hit the accelerator and was hit by the float."
