Hi! We have some news on our hopeful adoption of Homer the bloodhound pup. :)

Joyce from Rescue Pup called today and she's coming out tomorrow for a home visit! I think this sounds very promising, but now I have to clean the house!

**UPDATE**

We got him!

Well, I had to go to work today, but Chris was here for Joyce's visit. Everything went great and she said we're all set! He needs so be neutered first, though. I tried to bargain with them and get them to wait for the neuter but they weren't having any of it, which I totally understand. I just wish he wasn't so little.

They're going to call us and let us know when the neuter is scheduled, but she said we should have him by this week-end!

We still haven't decided on a name, but I'm soooo excited!

:D :D :D

Ha ha! You'll be up half the night cleaning like a mad woman! I was like that when they came for Millie's home visit. :D I was just going to straighten the living room, then I thought of cleaning the pet door off, then the patio, then I remembered to pick up the poop! I ended up cleaning the entire house!

Good luck and let us know asap! :D

Good luck. Mike and I do home visits and it's really not that big of a deal. Make sure that they know how excited you are. They'll want to see the fence I'm sure and then where you'll feed him and where he'll sleep. How many kids, if any, yada yada. The last one we did only took about 15 minutes. I did another one where the couple and I sat and talked for over an hour talking about dogs, food, etc....we still occasionally email.

Let us know! I LOVE Bloodhounds. Pictures too!!!

Well, as someone who has done hundreds of home visits, let me assure you, no one cares how clean your house is. We aren't there to see if you have dust bunnies under the sofa.

Honestly, in fact, I am very cautious to adopt a dog to someone with immaculately clean white carpet in every room and not a particle of dust anywhere. I just can't see the black lab mix puppy they want fitting into the home too well, and possilby ending up at the pound when it eat their $10,000 white leather sofa.

When I do home visits, I look at the yard and fence. I look for any inconsistencies between the application and the real situation ... or flat out lies, too. I watch the kids. Are they picking the kitten up and swinging it around the room? I watch the other pets. Are they friendly and happy? Or nervous and afraid ... like it's the first time they've ever been in the house in a year, or like somone regularly smacks them with a newspaper.

Cheshirekatt
02-01-2004, 11:36 PM
Well, the house needed a little cleaning so I basically put all my unmentionables away (undies and bras hanging around, drying) just did the basics.

My house is by no means a showcase but it is pretty darn kitty and puppy proof and I'm guessing that's what they'll be looking for. :D

Cheshirekatt
02-01-2004, 11:38 PM
Is a home visit a pretty good sign? Do you normally visit more than one house per application, or is it more like the last step in an application?

Can you tell I'm eager?? :D

Twisterdog
02-01-2004, 11:42 PM
It really depends on the dog, frankly.

Some poor pooches in shelters and rescues are lucky to get ever get one person interested in them, that meets our criteria. In that case, then yes, the home visit is the last step, pretty much.

However, if it is a dog that has several good applications on him, and many people wanting him, then we do home visits on several people, to help narrow down the choices.

Good luck today. I'm sure it will go well.
Our home visit for Ashlee, and with Ashlee, was to meet Shep and Kelcee. She never even looked at our yard. But it is fenced !! And I had to leave after she was here only a few minutes, to go to work. But she stayed with Tom and chated. And the next day we went and picked up Asher.
Post to us as soon as they leave

Well apparently the breeder (and I use that term loosely) brought Hazel and Homer in to the vet to be euthanized at 6 weeks old! Grrrrrrrr!! Just because they both have calcium deposits in one eye each. The kind vet tech there convinced him to give them up to find homes for them.

According to my research the calcium deposits should go away on their own in 8 or 9 months. Worse case scenario he'll need surgery, but it's generally totally fixable.

Still trying to settle on a name.....

So let's hear all the good ol boy, down home, southern names you can think of!
