L.A. ape reprises escapes

By Ryan Oliver
Staff Writer

A 17-year-old chimpanzee named Gracie escaped from her enclosure Monday at the Los Angeles Zoo for the fourth time in recent years and roamed free for 45 minutes, forcing the evacuation of 9,000 visitors.

With television helicopters hovering overhead, zookeepers finally cornered Gracie and fired a tranquilizer dart gun, but it only grazed her. Still, a short time later, she returned to the exhibit on her own.

"We have one individual animal here who happens to be an escape artist," said zoo director John Lewis. "She managed to bounce from one wall to another, and she got a handhold over one of the walls."

Security staff quickly separated visitors from the chimp and led them to the front of the zoo before deciding to shut down it down completely.

Gracie never strayed far from the chimpanzee enclosure after her escape around 3:30 p.m.

Irene Lopez of Norwalk was standing near the enclosure when she saw one particularly active chimpanzee leap out of her view.

"It kept trying to jump on top of some rocks," Lopez said. "It finally went over and out of view. It suddenly disappeared. We didn't know it had escaped at first, but when we saw everybody being evacuated, we got nervous."

One of the visitors who saw the escape said the other chimps "went crazy." Visitors said they thought the chimps might be cheering for Gracie.

But Lewis said the other animals were just excited.

"It was the excitement of something being different. They know that is not an area where they go," Lewis said.

The zoo was more crowded than usual on a Monday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Many visitors were unaware of just what had happened while they were ushered to the front of the park and news helicopters swarmed overhead.

"We thought maybe they were looking for somebody, or a mountain lion escaped," said 37-year-old Sandra Worsfold of Covina. "We had to ask somebody what happened."

Worsfold, who went to the zoo with her sister-in-law and six children, said she was not afraid to return to the zoo despite the chimp escape.

"I'm an animal lover," she said. "They're probably more scared of us than we are of them. It's just a little chimp."

Lewis said he did not know if Gracie would pose a threat to visitors, but he noted that chimpanzees are very strong for their size.

The escape was Gracie's fourth from the chimpanzee habitat since it was opened 1998.

In the past, the Los Angeles Zoo has come under criticism after animal escapes, including the brief escape of a 270-pound gorilla in October 2000.

Lewis said the chimpanzee exhibit had been modified repeatedly because of Gracie's earlier escapes.

"Each time, we've made corrections based on her abilities, and she's found another way," Lewis said. "We've got 14 other animals (in the habitat) -- none of which have been able to get out of this exhibit.

"What we normally do is look at the average ability of the animals ... being housed, and obviously Gracie is above-average."

Lewis said Gracie appeared to be in good condition. After her return, she was placed in a special enclosure Monday to prevent another escape.

"Gracie's fine," Lewis said.

Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, who represents the Griffith Park area where the zoo is located, arrived shortly after Gracie's escape.

"The zoo director and his staff are going to investigate to make sure this doesn't repeat itself," LaBonge said. "But Gracie does like to climb."

Lora LaMarca, director of marketing and public relations, said other animals were frightened by the media helicopters, but Gracie appeared to be having a good time when she got out, visiting the penthouse area in the exhibit where other chimpanzees are kept.

"You've got to love her," LaMarca said.

Made with Chunky Monkey ice cream of course! I have some very ripe bananas, I can make some loaves of banana bread for the morning arrivals. Maybe Gracie heard about Marios adventures at Thursdays last week and wanted to meet him. Remember the scene in the Clint Eastwood movie when he and Clyde escape the female from the zoo in the middle of the night and she & Clyde end up at a motel. KEEP THOSE MONKEYS OF THE CEILING FAN!

Good morning everyone. You guys have been busy.....ummm warm banana bread with nuts - and just a little bit of butter - oh, it goes so good with this coffee. Thanks, Tray for bringing in the coffee.

I saw the news the day that Gracie escaped her enclosure. I just love the local news - it came on as BREAKING NEWS............DUM DE DUM DUM...........and cut to a helicopter shot of the chimp - well, doing what chimps do.

Breaking news used to be for more serious events - but here in California - TV news is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

I will be back for one of those Banana Daqs.

I'll take some of that banana bread - without nuts - and a refresher on my coke with ice and a straw. :D

Mmmmmm.....the banana bread is d-licious Laurie! I loooovvee banana bread! I read somewhere that if you have bananas going bad but just don't have the time to make the bread, you can freeze the bananas - unpeeled - and then when you have time you just thaw them out and use them in the banana bread. They will be mushy but you'll mush them anyway for the bread so supposedly they work just fine. I haven't tried it yet, but I have some bananas in the freezer just waiting for me to find time to test it out.

Here's my joke for this week. I love Maxine. :D

I have shared this before, but I will do it again.

One of the best scenes I have ever witnessed was at a visit to the Los Angeles Zoo.

A group of teenage boys were taunting the gorillas. There is a huge silverback there - and he just sat watching them with those great all-knowing eyes that they have.

Then he suddenly reached behind him - gathered in his hand a fresh "batch" and flung it at the boys - scattering it all over them.

It all happened so quickly and they were totally caught unawares.

I just loved it.

momoffuzzyfaces, I remember that game, my grandkids still love that. I know there are just some names you don't use though!;) like Chuck!!;)

There was another song it had something like:

three, six, nine,
the goose drink wine,
the monkey chewed tobacco on the street car line,
the line broke,
the monkey got choked,
and they all went to heaven in a little rowboat!!

That is very old, like me!! And it was out about the same time as the name game.

Two blondes had driven across the country to see Disney World in Florida.

As they approached it and got onto the final stretch of highway, they saw a sign saying "Disney World Left!"

After thinking for a minute, the driver blonde said "Oh well!" and started driving back home.
__________________________________________

Gloria the blonde once heard that milk baths would make you beautiful. She left a note for her milkman Alan to leave 15 gallons of milk.

When Alan read the note, he felt there must be a mistake. He thought she probably meant 1.5 gallons, so he knocked on the door to clarify the order.

Gloria came to the door, and Alan said, "I found your note to leave 15 gallons of milk. Did you mean 15 gallons or 1.5 gallons?"

Gloria said, "I want 15 gallons. I'm going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath."

Alan asked, "Oh, alright, would you like it pasteurized?"

Gloria replied, "No, just up to my waist."

Its called the name game - and just be glad your name isn't Chuck.;)

The Name Game
Shirley Ellis

The name game!

Shirley!
Shirley, Shirley bo Birley Bonana fanna fo Firley
Fee fy mo Mirley, Shirley!

Lincoln!
Lincoln, Lincoln bo Bincoln Bonana fanna fo Fincoln
Fee fy mo Mincoln, Lincoln!

Come on everybody!
I say now let's play a game
I betcha I can make a rhyme out of anybody's name
The first letter of the name, I treat it like it wasn't there
But a B or an F or an M will appear
And then I say bo add a B then I say the name and Bonana fanna and a
fo
And then I say the name again with an F very plain
and a fee fy and a mo
And then I say the name again with an M this time
and there isn't any name that I can't rhyme

Arnold!
Arnold, Arnold bo Barnold Bonana fanna fo Farnold
Fee fy mo Marnold Arnold!

But if the first two letters are ever the same,
I drop them both and say the name like
Bob, Bob drop the B's Bo ob
For Fred, Fred drop the F's Fo red
For Mary, Mary drop the M's Mo ary
That's the only rule that is contrary.

Okay? Now say Bo: Bo
Now Tony with a B: Bony
Then Bonana fanna fo: bonana fanna fo
Then you say the name again with an F very plain: Fony
Then a fee fy and a mo: fee fy mo
Then you say the name again with an M this time: Mony
And there isn't any name that you can't rhyme

Every body do Tony!
Pretty good, let's do Billy!
Very good, let's do Marsha!
A little trick with Nick!
The name game

That's funny Richard. There's just something about those guys....

Years ago I had one fella tell me about an error he was getting on his PC so I told him to restart it.

He came back a few minutes later and wanted to know where the on-off switch was....I went back into his office and did it for him.

Here was a guy with all that power; he could make the books look good or bad; transfer large sums of money from one fund to another, yet failed to understand the simpliest of tasks.

Then he left and his replacement would ask me to help him balance the General Ledger.....  I'm in the IT Dept....

I haven't done an Idiot of the Week for a while (too many to choose from), but here is Weird Quote of the Week.

From www.cyclingnews.com about a new doping scandal.

"...The investigation is centred on ... a veterinarian under suspicion of supplying doping substances to cyclists, and to the horse and pigeon racing world.

Belgian newspaper De Standaard reports that Museeuw and co. will have to answer questions as to why illegal products were allegedly found in their homes. Kortrijk investigating magistrate ... said that the riders are not being questioned again because "a glass of milk" was found. "

They give roids to pigeons??? Well, you learn something new every day!

And watch the glasses of milk in your house, you might end up on Crimestoppers!

Yup, the whole month!!! You must understand that I'm a bit of a workaholic and usually bank lots of overtime during the year. Since we don't get paid for overtime, my time off is in lieu and my holiday time never gets used up. Well, HR is starting to get upset about it so I had to sit down today with my boss and we both had to figure out a plan to take 60 days off this year. If the Canadian dollar was better I'd stay for 2 weeks, rent a car and drive up and down the coast, but as it is I think it will be a week at the most.

Hi Captain, since you are a day ahead, pull up a chair and let us know what's going to happen ;) I think it's great you are going to have a BBQ on the same day. We'll have to coordinate a time when we can all toast each other.:)

Tubby & Peanut's Mom
01-23-2004, 08:09 PM
Oh, before I leave, Robin you reminded me I was having a retirement thought before my boss told me to go home.

Terry is looking at retiring in 3 years. He'll be 60, I'll be 45. I've already started planning by taking these IT courses. I'm hoping I can find something I can do on the computer that doesn't require going to the office everyday. That way I can work from wherever we're at. It will require a big investment because we'll have to get satellite dish for high speed internet access, but it'll be worth it if I can actually make money doing something on the computer, online.

Terry signed up for this thing called Workamper News. There are all these campgrounds all over the country that'll give you a full-hook up site for free if you just work 20 hours a week for them. Most will even pay you a salary or hourly rate if you work more than 20 hours, so we've been looking into that too. I mean really, 20 hours a week is nothing! And I won't have to sit in a cave all day long like I do now. There is a campground in Malibu Beach looking for a couple to work - Terry says let's go!

So anyway, I guess what all this means, what I'm trying to say is we won't necessarily be "retiring," just changing careers. ;) We already know whatever we're going to do it's going to be in the motorhome, we just gotta figure out a way to make a little money while bombing around the country. And the beauty of it is we won't need a lot of money. So I told him if all else fails, we pull in some place and park it for a month and work at McDonalds just to put some cash in our pockets. I've got experience at McD's, so they'd hire me in an instant! He's going to deliver car parts and I'm going to deliver flowers - how bad can it be?

Ok, now I'm off to class. :D

Well, I can go in the back and find something. I think there might be some nachos left over. How about I heat them up with all the fixin's:)

6:35pm here now so I'm heading home. Enjoy the nachos and I'll check in later tonight.

I've heard a good bottle of two buck chuck goes well with frozen pizza....ya think? :D

Schools done for the night, all I have to do is take my weekly quiz yet, and that can wait until tomorrow. As I was doing my homework a thought struck me. I said to myself "Hey dummy, Slick works in IT, maybe she can relate to what you're doing in class." So we're working right now on User and Group ID's and permissions and all that happy cr*p. We are sort of touching on partitioning hard drives and volumes and that stuff, but I dont' quite get that - why would you do that?

Anyway, Slicks off for the weekend so I don't want to bore you with work stuff.

How 'bout another margarita. Slick, yours was yummy too! I'll definitely have another, but I think I better partake of one of those comfy chairs again. After another one of these things I don't know if I'm going to be able to stand up.
:D

Hi Debbie: you know great minds think alike. When I was driving home tonight I was thinking of you and was going to offer my assistance. Yes, I understand all that permission stuff. Feel free to email me any time and I'll see what I can do. What operating system are you working on. NT?? Win2K?? WinXP? Ooops, sorry, work talk again. Email me baby :)

another 'rita for you Done! Oh BTW, it's a double :D :D

While I was waiting for you to come home I was watching TV and it showed this weird guy on Vancouver Island that was a Folk Artist. What is that you say??? Well he proudly displayed what looks like a bird house with tacks all over it. He called it a Tacks Shelter :D :D
