Jo has a sore paw..

Josie has been licking her paw a lot. I looked at it to see if something was in it hurting her as she's been limping. I discovered a raw part on the inside of her paw..Its very red from her licking it all the time. It seems shes licked/chewed off part of the pad on the inside of her foot. Rufus use to do this, only on his legs. The vets told me to put something on it. So thats not going to help really..Wondering if anyone knows what I should do? She's only 5 (almost 6) so do you think she could be stiff already? I mean what would cause her to lick if she wasn't sore? I tried to take a picture of it, but I can't really without it being sore for her..Not sure what I can put on it to keep her from licking it..I know she doesn't like that bengay stuff..do you think its harmful to dogs? What should I do?

What more then likely caused it was salt on the walkways. I know PEI doesn't salt their roads, but some salt their own walkways. Or she could have gotten her paw too cold & it got hurt in the snow/ice.

How to treat it & have fun too.

I love first aid & Max was always good to work on.

1. soak her paw in warm water & gently wah it with the warm water & ur bare hands (no soap). try to soak it for 5 mins if u can.

2. make her laydown to keep her off her paw, so it wont get dirty.

3. put lots of polysporn on it & all around it.

4. put a sterial(sp) bandage cloth all around her paw & up her leg a bit.

5. get one of ur socks & tape it to her leg with sergical tape. Make sure u leave about 2-3 inches of slack at her toes.

6. optional. put a 2ed sock onto her leg to help reduce dirt from getting in when shes outside. Mke sure the tape is on tight at the top of the sock & in 2 other places to make sureit doesn't fall off or move around too much.
