Okay, well I'm assuming that you already know how to change your avatar and use a custom one, so I won't bother you with that. :D
You could upload the avatar to a server if you want, but it really isn't necessary. Just right click on the avatar, click on Save Picture As..., and the save window will pop up. Make sure the avatar is saved in .gif format...otherwise it won't flip through the pictures. Do the normal routine to change the avatar, but instead of trying to enter a URL in the URL box, look right down below it where it says Upload from your computer.... Click on the browse button right next to the text box and find the saved .gif avatar in your files. Click open and the text box should have the name of the avatar in it.
...And voila, that's all there is to it. :) If you still have any problems with it, just let me know! :D
