Before the nay-sayers start slamming our president, I just want to say I'm very proud of him for pulling the surprise visit off to our troops. I have a cousin who is home on leave from Iraq. He was lucky. He got to spend Thanksgiving at home with family. Lots of our soldiers won't. I can tell you a visit from the President means a lot to those serving over there. I will admit to being pleased that he pulled a fast one on the media too.;)

I have just been reading about it on our BBC news site and I think it was a wonderful thing to do! :) :)

I just saw that on the news too.
As much as I don't really care for Bush, this was an incredible thing he did--I'm sure it meant so much to those soldiers.

I agree, it's great how he pulled a fast one on the media too.

Amazing. I'm so proud. I think Mr. Bush is a wonderful President and I believe our cause in Iraq is a good one.
He was my choice, is my choice and will be my choice next November.

Jeez 2K, you're scaring me! Why you ask? Because I totally agree with you, and that doesn't happen very often! :D

Same here, Joycenalex.

Personally, I can't stand the man for many, many reasons, but I'm glad that the troops were able to have their morale boosted. They sure could use it, especially now that they're cutting down on their numbers.

I was so touched when the 'breaking news' came on tv, and they showed footage. It was definitely a wonderful thing for our President to do, to spend Thanksgiving with all of our troops.

I think it took a tremendous effort of security to pull Bush's visit to Iraq off. Often our government seems pretty spastic, but this time they got one right.

I don't agree with a lot of stuff W is doing, but this was a good deed.

Senator Clinton toured in Afganistan on Thanksgiving. She also had dinner with troops.

I feel a bit for the troops in Afganistan, they are a bit overshadowed at times, at times forgotten.

one local talk show host made this observation.....

the president got a rousing ovation during his speech
but you could also hear nine voices muttering in the background.

He was referring to the nine Democratic candidates for the presidency.

Of course, he was corrrect...later in the day there were people muttering and complaining about the possible political gains
GB made by pulling off the trip. So much for taking a day off from politics.

I'd kill to have THE BIG BOSS come into my office and tell me I was doing a good job. Of course she'd have an ulterior motive...
but what do I care........at least she noticed.

-------------------
The coolest part of the story was when Air Force One was spotted by a British Airways plane. The BA pilot radioed AFO and asked if indeed it was the President's plane.....

They answer was, 'No, this is a Gulfstream' (a small private jet)

The BA pilot knew something was going on and just said,
"Oh....."

-------------------------------

I didn't vote for Bush either, but landing on a carrier and flying into Baghdad Int'l. is pretty tough.

I think that the Demos should try and get one of their own
to walk on the moon...

That's what it may take to beat GW next year...

But then again, some politicians end up beating themselves...

Although I am not fond of our President Bush, I do think it was a wonderful thing for him to fly into Baghdad Int'l to have Thanksgiving with the troops. Obviously, they all seemed to love it and it gave them a morale boost they sure could use.

Our troops in Afghanistan do seem to be overshadowed by all that is going on in Iraq and that is a shame. Their jobs have been just as dangerous and tough.

I have to laugh because I bet there are those in the media that are really angry because he pulled something over on them.

Did you see the spread the troops had. I know it doesn't make up for being away from home, but i'm glad they were having such a nice meal. It looked great.

I had heard that there is a place in the middle of
the States where all the TG meals were 'put together' and sent out to the troops overseas.

I wasn't paying too much attention to the story but I seem to remember the newscaster saying that there were about 80,000 lbs. of turkey being sent out to the troops in one area.....

One meal probably doesn't make up for being away from home - but can you imagine the PRESIDENT serving you taters??????

Yeah, probably a real good publicity/political stunt, but where were the other politicos???

just found it!!!!

take a look at the numbers!!!

Like Gini, I'm not overly fond of Bush, but I thought the surprise visit was a wonderful gesture. Not just from a morale point of view, but the troops must appreciate the sheer effort involved in getting the Pres to Iraq secretly!

I was surprised that the Pres went to iraq...course I was also surprised Monday night, when we were in Vegas and I found it he was going to be there the next morning...at the one casino we really watned to go to, but hadn't made it to yet...

I think it was a cool idea, and I love that the media was so upset by it :)
