My continuing saga of Dexter (see "Unexpected Surprise")is positive and I thought you might want to know how he is progressing in his new home. Dexter's "dad" reports to me every couple of days. They are so happy. He has adjusted to his new siblings, 2 cats and one older dog. He is so spoiled that he gets to stay inside during the day and his new owner goes home to see him at lunchtime everyday. He already understands the boundaries of the yard and doesn't try to leave. He is also very protective of his new owner, after just three weeks of being there. I knew there was something special about this puppy from the day I found him. Just wish I could have kept him! Hopefully we can get a good picture and submit Dexter for Dog of the Day sometime soon! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I feel like you've become a good friend- thanks for the update. Was thinking of you the other day but didn't have time to contact you. Couldn't be happier for Dexter and his dad. They sound like a perfect match. Things happen for a reason. They were meant to be together. Give Dexter a treat, hug and kiss for me when you see him. And a big hug to his dad for being so kindhearted. Karen http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Karen,
It has been so much fun to report on Dexter's progression through the adoption process. I know it's easier because I have a happy ending to report!
I've looked forward to letting you know what is going on in Dexter's life and will give an update after I visit him tonight.
I'm Logan Givens and live in the upstate area of SC. You can e-mail me at [email protected] or [email protected].
I love to talk about all my babies anytime, including my adopted son, Dexter! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/cool.gif

We saw Dexter last night. He has grown so much in a little less than three weeks. He is so happy and is a "leaner". He acted like he knew us (of course we want to believe that he did). I sat on the ground and he just came and sat down beside me, and kissed my face a lot. He reminds me of my very personable golden, Lilly. She just has to touch you all the time. I am so happy that he is doing so well. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Your story really touched me.. I have been keeping my friends updated as well as me. Dexter sounds really sweet. I wish more people would stop and help an animal in need. Bless you for doing so.

Dexter left me a message on my voice mail last night. I laughed my head off! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
All I could hear was "squeak, squeak, squeak". Then his new master said, "Dexter wanted to talk with you". He was chewing on his squeaky ghost that my daughter and I had gotten for him. My friend said it made him think of me.. Soft? Squeaky?... I'm not sure how to take that! Ha Ha! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif
Dexter is growing fast and doing great. What a great little man he is! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I haven't given you an update lately on Dexter. Now I can give it first hand! Dexter came last night to spend the weekend with us because his new owner had to travel out of town to visit with his ailing father.
He has grown!!! He is such a handsome boy, solid black (you can hardly see his eyes), has much of a Chow look about him, but a wonderful temperament and shorter hair like a Laborador Retriever. I think he represents a good mix. He is as tall as my smaller Golden Retreiver, Honey, at six months old. His black coat is so shiny and pretty and he has gotten along beautifully with my girls. It is as if he has never been separated from them. Right now Dexter is lying on his back sleeping in the middle of the living room floor. I was awakened at 6 am when he decided that he could jump the gate in the kitchen! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif Of course on a day when I thought I might sleep late. No way!
I have to tell you that his new owner was reluctant to leave last night and has already called three times to check on him. I definitely found this boy the perfect place to live and certainly don't mind being the "kennel" whenever he need us. What a wonderful puppy. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Forgive me, but it's been a long while since I've been here and it seems that I have missed a happy story. If I may be so bold, who is Dexter? I want in on the happy story too!!!

Hi Kendall. Dexter is a little black puppy who I found walking down the street one day a couple of months ago. One of my good friends took him after a week or so and he is SO happy! I told the story in "Unexpected Surprise" in this catagory. Thanks for everyone's interest. Dexter has gone to Virginia for Thanksgiving this weekend! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Oops! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif
Kendall, I didn't realize that my Dexter story is gone before I referenced it. Anyway, I found Dexter one morning walking down the street in front of my house. He was hungry and thirsty. I took him to my veterinarian to make sure he was ok, but knowing I couldn't keep him. Once my vet checked him out and gave him all his up to date shots, he told me this would be an 80-100 pound dog when full grown. He was estimating that he was about 4 months old at the time I found him. He is definitely a chow mix of some kind. He is so loving and sweet. One of my friends came by to see him and agreed to keep him. They are so happy together. Dexter has fit right in his new home with another dog and two cats. I already had two full grown Golden Retrievers so I knew I wasn't going to be able to keep him in my limited space, although I would have if I had more room. He has come to spend the weekend with us once, and made himself right at home! I think Dexter is one grateful dog to have found people that love him so much. He knew the right house to walk past! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
Hope that gives you the abbreviated version of Dexter's story.
Logan

Hey, folks - just an FYI. Dexter's story isn't "gone" and meither are any other older stories. The default setting when you click on "Dog Rescue" or and other section is to "Show topics from last 30 days" which is simply to keep the size of the list you see managable. But you can change that. Look up near the top right of the page, underneath the "new Topic" button and the line that says profile | register | preferences | faq | search. to the bar that says "Show topics from last 30 days" and you can scroll down and change it to "Show topics from last 100 days" and there is "Unexpected Surprise (Dexter's Story) in the list! You can even chose "Show topics from last year" if, for example, you are new here and want to know everything! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Oh no, Karen, why did you tell me that! Now that I know I can go way back as well, I will never get anything else done.

Hi everyone. I heard from Dexter's dad this morning. He said that all the way to Virginia, Dexter sat in the seat of the car, "backwards" and never relaxed. Glad to report that on the way home, Dexter decided it was ok to lie down and relax a little. When he wasn't doing that, he leaned on his "dad" and looked out the window. Dexter's dad lost his own father on Thanksgiving Day and he said he was so glad to have Dexter with him to hug. It was a sad Thanksgiving for him. I know how comforting my pets are for me in times of sorrow. They just let you love all over them, don't they?

I'm sorry to hear about Dexter's dad's dad
(if that makes any sence) but I'm glad to hear Dexter is doing well

It makes perfect sense! I guess in reality, it was Dexter's "granddad" who died, although he never had the opportunity to meet Dexter. I know he would have loved him.

Hi Logan..you know me, I believe in things happen for a reason and little omens etc..Isn't it great that Dexter and his dad bonded so easily, that Dexter fit right in? I'm glad Dexter's around to ease some pain. Give your friend (I forgot his name, sorry) my best...K

Logan, what a great story about Dexter and his new dad, but sad about Grandpa. I have often seen "rescued" dogs (even from shelters) bond very closely with their new families. Almost as though they KNOW that they've been saved and are very, very grateful. Do you suppose I am anthropomorphizing too much?

lhg0962
12-02-2000, 09:57 PM
No, Ktreva, absolutely not! In fact, my thought on Dexter is exactly the same! Mike loves him with a passion. I sent my mom a picture in the mail this week of her "adopted grandson" and she fell in love too! Dexter is a perfect gentleman and is one lucky dog. I would have NEVER let him go to the pound and am so lucky that I had a friend who wanted him. Dexter is certainly lucky too. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

I personally think that dogs understand better than humans. We have 2 dogs from the local shelter and they are both so loving. They love life. Shawna, the Aussie, was full grown when we got her and would roll on her back if anyone raised their voice for anything, but now she takes on all the dogs and is the mother of the pack. Jazzy, the Dane, was only 3 months old when we got her, but you could tell she knew she had been abandoned and then saved, now she thinks she is our 120 pound lap dog. George, the hound mix, still thanks us, we got him because someone dumped him in our neighbors' back yard and they couldn't take him, so we did, and we couldn't be happier. Even Tigger, who my husband brought home because someone brought Tig to where my husband worked and told my husband that if someone didn't take this pup that they were going to take it home and shoot him. Tigger is totally attached even today, 2 years later. Sox is the only one from a litter, but 4 of the 6 pups died from worms because the people are irresponsible morons and even she seems to realize how lucky she is.
Enough blithering, my only point is that dogs know when they have been saved and are far more appreciative than any human could hope to be.

Hear, hear, Kendall. There are a lot of people that think I'm nutty and a buttload of "experts" that are sure dogs do not have emotions. (Rude snort here -- is there a smilie for that?). Guess this goes along with the "Do Dogs Dream?" thing. Anyway, I am anxiously awaiting an opportunity to see a picture of Dexter (with Dad?) and am really enjoying the updates. It's one of those things that is so neat it chokes you up.

I am finally going to have some great pictures of Dexter, Honey, Lilly and Mimi put on disk and get them submitted for Dog of the Day, of course Mimi will be there for Cat of the Day. Hopefully, I can arrange that tomorrow and if you want me to e-mail them to you, just send me a note to either of these e-mail addresses: [email protected] or
[email protected].

Our buddy, Dexter, has decided that he likes to chew on the carpet in front of his new owner's back door! Thank goodness, my friend is well connected and can eventually just replace that portion of the carpet with tile. That's how I met him. His company renovated my bathroom and did a wonderful job.
My friend says that he can not fuss at Dexter very much as he is a special dog and he continues to be glad that he took him in! ME TOO! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Well, none of us would know how to cope with a "perfect" dog, so it's interesting Dexter has developed a "quirk". Wonder what he's interested in on that carpet? Does his daddy go out that door when he leaves? Maybe he's just wanting to go with???? It sounds to me like Dexter is a very lucky dog and his daddy is just as lucky. What a match made in Heaven! (Sigh) I love happy stories.

I bought Dexter a wonderful candy cane for his Christmas present. It's one of those wonderful, wooly chewables. He has enjoyed his Halloween ghost so much (still is). Honey and Lilly have destoyed their "Christmas trees" that we bought them.
PS I'm giving Dexter's dad a framed 5x7 photo of his lovely boy!

I took Dexter his Christmas present tonight and his dad had just brought him a thousand new toys to play with (could that be because he was chewing on everything in the room, including the stereo speakers?). He didn't know which toy to pick up first! Dexter has grown so much and he and his dad are definitely bonded! That's enough Christmas present for me. A successful rescue!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Well, I've been off the web for a couple of weeks due to a virus in our system (I'm on another system -- virus-free) and I just had to check on Dexter. I'm so glad he's still doing well and it sounds like "Dad" has the chewing pretty much in hand. Hope he had a fantastic Christmas and a most Happy New Year and the same to you Logan. By the way, does Dexter's daddy have a computer with a web hook-up? We'd love to "chat" with him, too. Happy holidays, all.

Have a bit of an update on my little buddy, Dexter.
First of all, he is not so little anymore. Mike (Dexter's Dad) took Dexter to the vet this week and he weighed in at 70 pounds! So far, my vet was right on target. He is very healthy and happy, actually quite shy, and loves his dad to pieces.
At around 9-10 months old, this giant black dog, is very serene, but still does his share of puppy chewing. He has completely destroyed a chair in Mike's den, but being the loving parent, like all of us, he isn't even mad about it.
Dexter will be neutered tomorrow. Mike scheduled on a Friday, so he could be home with Dexter all weekend. I'm sure he will be fine! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif And I'm glad I he is doing the right thing, so there won't be anymore Dexters walking around.

Glad to hear about Dexter. I am so happy he has a dad like your friend, Mike. They seem to get along so well. And Mike sounds like a sweetheart. Don't you wish all stray stories would end this way?
