I copied this from another list that I'm on...

The Meaning of Rescue
author unknown

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm . . . Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

So sweet, to the point about how an adopted feels, happiness will take away the sadness.

This is one of my favorite poems and on one website it was listed as from the Shelter Dog and the author as Evelyn Colbath.

I associate this poem with my dog Tucker who was a stray, then a shelter dog, then had a short failed adoption. The lady was going to take him back to the shelter but knowing we were looking for a dog to adopt, she asked if we would keep him for the weekend to see if we would want him. He tried so hard to fit in that it was only a couple hours later that we knew he was ours. When I first found this poem I would read it to him and then say "Yes, Tucker, FOREVER."

When my family adopts a dog, we know there might be "baggage". We have to deal with it, no matter what it is. It is a commitment to a living creature. They become your "babies". Any of our adopted dogs, no matter what the problem may be, will have a forever home. I know many of you out there feel the same!

I wonder how many of us could manage to love as hard and unconditionaly as our fur kids do. Makes me feel very small.
