I was just re-reading all those posts from the Willie incident, because I am battling against common sense and a desire to save the dog population. Cats are out cause my hubby's allergic http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif Anyway...it's so hard when you see those sweet faces!!!! I don't have kids yet, but ya know some people just can't get enough of them,...I'm the same way with the canine population! HELP! I think I might go to the DFL just to see....It's such a TRAGEDY that people don't SPAY AND NEUTER THEIR PETS!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/mad.gif

Get in the car, I'll drive!!!

I think i have the same problem. I'm looking for a new car and one of the thoughts that keeps going through my head is - how many dogs will it hold? and is that with or without crates? and what about air for the pups? and is it pup proof? (Auto windows without childproof locks are bad - okay auto windows are bad if the mechanism rests on the armrest - thats where the pup puts her paws - bug shut her head in one!)
i don't think there is anything wrong with you. you could always do dog transporting or foster care..........

As long as there are animals in the shelters, I'll always want just one more...

Bugmom...So relieved to know I was looking for the same criteria when I bought a new car! Dog comfort and safety! And if a bit of doggie hair annoys you, then WALK! (LOL!) Pyrlab, your pup is beautiful! Best of 2 fabulous breeds! Remember the end of 101 Dalmatians? A huge estate covered in dogs. well, that would be me!!!

Phew..I am not alone....we are about to move house...so if that goes well, maybe I'll be in luck. Every day I want to go to the shelter and talk to the dogs, but then I get sad when I leave without one! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif

I had a huge test of my will power today. There was an ADORABLE little girl toy poodle who loved cats, dogs, and kids at the shelter. I WAS SO TEMPTED to take her and RUN!!!!!! I really want another dog but I'm trying to wait at least until I move in August. I came so very close to adopting her. I know she'll be gone by tomorrow though, she's so adorable.

When I was looking for a new car, I really liked the 3 door Saturns, until I saw the backseat. There was noway Shai's big greyhound butt was going to fit in that back seat!!! The backseat of the one I saw was like a bucket seat with pop holder's b/n them! Shai would not like that at all!!
Aly, I am with you there, one of my best friend's is trying to give me her cat b/c it hides when her boyfriend is there, I don't know she is such a sweet cat, but I don't know if Shai would like it!! and vice versa!
And last night at another friend's house I almost snuck a baby calico kitty under my coat!! She was the most precious thing!!! She is only 5 weeks tho. My problem is I don't know where to put the litter box, and food dish where Shai can't get them, I have an extremely small house!!!

I had the same problem with the litter box and food because I live in an apartment. I have to keep the cat's food on my bathroom counter or else there she would starve to death cause the dogs love her food. I actually keep my bathroom a lot cleaner since I put her food up there. I have a closet near the entryway of my apartment that I'm not using so I put the litter in there. I have the door open only a crack. If Reece goes near there, I call him away and I've never had a problem at all of him in the litter. Now Harley on the other hand... http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

If you want to test Shai with cats, put her on a leash in the same room as one and see what she does. Or you could use a crate. Its a careful process with a lot involved in the introduction of a dog and cat. I'm not sure how greyhounds are in general with cats. It seems to me they would like to chase them. Hopefully not http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I maintained a website for our local shelter for about a year (someone else is doing it now). When I started I had two dogs. Now I have 4 dogs and 1 cat. It is very hard to resist those desperate faces. Spaying and neutering is so available and many places offer financial assistance with it. Education is certainly the key to pet overpopulation. The myths of neutering must be replaced by the facts that the pet is much better off in every way if it is spayed or neutered. It's an uphill battle, but every saved life is a victory. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I know that my husband and I are suckers for dogs in need. We are up to 9 of them now and all of them are rescues. They range in size from our 20 pound Border mix to our 115 pound Great Dane. So I am of the belief if you can handle it...GO FOR IT! It's unbelievable to me the love that you get back. It's also hard for me to believe the morons out there that just dump their dog for no good reason (like there is a good reason to dump them anyway). We came by our beagle because the guy down the street kept him outside and he kept getting out and coming to our house so he decided he didn't want him anymore and was going to dump him in the woods (with a blind left eye to boot). My husband and I are going to start volunteering at the SPCA next weekend...and am I looking forward to it!

I just don't understand why they don't allow shopping carts in the shelters?! and because of that (and the fact that i have no will power) i can't volunteer. I do some fostering but thats tough for me too... i wanna keep 'em all. it hurts me too much to leave them in the runs. i cry all the way home.
Ahh to have the home in 101 Dalmations! what a joy that would be. (not sure about the food bill...)

By the way - i currently have a saturn coupe too and have found that by leaving the back seats flipped down and putting a pad down (one of the garden chair thick pads) bug stretches out there nicely without any problem! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

You guys are the best. I just wish you all lived on my street. We'd have such a good time together.

Rachel, I wish we lived on your street too, then we wouldn't have the police called on us because of our dogs by a snotty neighbor. He said our dogs barked at night and kept him up (just to let you know they go out for the last time at 10:00 and don't bark and if they do they come in immediately) and our yard stunk (which I will admit we were a little lax on cleaning but now I clean everytime one of them goes) I refuse to give this guy any leverage. I would also point out that all of them are current on shots, on Interceptor, have city tags, and we have a small kennel license which allows us to have up to 15 dogs. Ok, I'm off my soapbox now. So, yes, Rachel I wish we were neighbors too. Oh by the way, we own a minivan with the middle 2 seats taken out so there is plenty of room for our Dane.

I'm still giggling over the image of the shopping carts at the animal shelter. The pound local to me requires that you go through the dog kennel area to get to the cat cages. That is definitely like the grocery store routing you through the entire store just to get a quart of milk! If they had carts at the pound, well... I'd be in big trouble! You can't adopt just one!!!!

Pettalkville! Hehe! I would move there in a second. Wouldn't it be great to have all the emotional support we get here in person? And all the petsitters? People would be fighting over who got to petsit who! None of our dogs would ever be alone because someone would always want to watch them while we're away. And imagine the block parties we could have http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Oh Christmas would be FUN! Lets see, a tiara for Hannah, a new outfit for Simba, a garbage can full of dog treats for Daisy http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif ......

What a joyful place! bug says "all those people to throw the ball for me!" we'd have the best block parties. and the most exclusive pet shops. all the manufacturers of toys would be talking to us for trial runs of toys and foods. And we could say "No you use sub-ingredients! " "that lead ball inside is poisonious to dogs - get that toy outta pettalkville!"
Could we have a Feline Farm? and a Horse Rescue-where the mares and foals can be rescued from Premarin hormone replacement hell?
Oh and a pond or fountain for puppy playing - and once a month fill it with bubbles for community dog wash?! (just one big water fight!) http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Ok Rachel!!! Sheesh!!!! I thought everyone knew about our dogs!! lol Ok, here I go....
Dog #1= Sox= 3/4 Aussie, 1/4 GSD, female
Dog #2= Tigger= 1/2 Husky, 1/2 Pit, male
Dog #3= Jasmine aka Jazzy= Great Dane female
Dog #4= Shawna= Aussie, female
Dog #5= George= Hound mix, male
Dog #6 = Serenity = Boxer/Pit mix, female
Dog #7 = Billy = Beagle, male
Dog #8 = DeeDee = Border Collie mix, female
Dog #9 = Vonney = Chow/Aussie? mix, male

Sox (3yrs old) is the only one from a litter, but we still call her a rescue since 4 of the 6 pups died from worms. Tigger (2.5 years old) came as a result of someone bringing him as an 8 week old pup to where my husband worked at the time and saying that if someone didn't take him the guy was going to take him home and shoot him. Jasmine (22 months old) and Shawna (between 3 and 5 years old) are both from the local Animal Care and Control. Jazzy was 3 months old and had been shoved into one of the recepticles and Shawna was a stray who had had her tags ripped off and dumped. George (1 year old) came to us as a result of someone dumping him in our neighbor's backyard and they couldn't keep him. Serenity (1.5 years old) came from the SPCA after being there for almost a year and had come there much the same way we got Tigger. Billy (2 years old) was our neighbor's dog and he kept digging out under his kennel (he was outdoors 24/7) and coming down to our house and the guy decided that when Billy's eye went blind (as a result of the owner's stupidity) he didn't want him anymore and was going to dump him in the woods and my husband stepped in and said "I don't think so" and now we have him and we had to have his eye removed because something had gotten in it and the lens exploded. DeeDee (10 months) and Vonney (1.5 years old) both came from the Animal Welfare League in a small town near Fort Wayne and both were near the needle and I couldn't resist them. I might point out the director is soooo qualified (NOT) he is a chef by trade and just indiscriminately puts dogs down. Ok, I think I've babbled long enough now. Did you get all that Rachel? I'll bet you're sorry you asked now!! hehehehe

Weeeeellllll.....we have 1060 square feet upstairs and 1060 square feet in the basement of which 675 square feet are finished and we have about 1/4 of an acre in the backyard that is fenced. We may get one more, I'm looking at a Weim in Missouri and a Weim pup in California, OR there is a sweet little hound mix at the SPCA that I fell in love with the other day. But I am NOT getting all 3...there is a limit unfortunately. Thanks for the congrats, after last week's incident with our neighbors I needed that.

Rachel, your brood is cute too!! Too bad you don't live in Fort Wayne; the SPCA has a poodle with epilepsy named Regis who needs a home. Bugmom...I'm not sure what addition you're referring to...I've condsidered so many!! lol The last addition was Vonney, the Chow mix, I would love to have 4 or 5 of them from the SPCA, so who knows which one I was referring to before! DeeDee is currently trying to eat a rock that I took out of one of our aquariums...I think she likes the algae!
