I took some new pictures of our little Emma girl tonight to show you how she's doing. She has an appointment tomorrow morning with a specialist in Pasadena at 9:30, I'll be sure to get online sometime to update you all.

EDIT: I took Emma back to the vet yesturday because I was concerned she was in pain. She had a 103.4 temperature and Dr. Hanser said that her eyes showed signs on inflammation internally. She's now on more Clavimox drops...this time, flavored.

My vet talked to the specialist I'll be seeing tomorrow and they discussed some scary things. :( Please hold Emma up in prayer tomorrow...I'm worried about her.

The specialist mentioned she had symptoms of glaucoma. :( Its apparently VERY painful for an animal to have, ESPECIALLY one with Emma's other eye problems. If they find glaucoma, they will most likely remove her eye. **poor baby!!**

I did get some really good news though...when they heard that I work at a vet hospital, they said that they would give me 25% off! And...since I do rescue/fostering, I may get more off as well! That is a huge blessing considering this is going to cost so much money. I've been praying hard about Emma and what to do...it feels like He's listening. :)

Anyway, please pray for her tomorrow. Thank you all so much!

Love,
Kelly & Little Emma

Kelly,

You have been such an angel to your kitties. I am sure Emma will be just fine. Even if she does have to get her eye removed, she will adjust quickly. Animals don't pout and mope like us humans. She'll adjust to her one eye and move on with her life :)

I wish you the best of luck tomorrow and I'm sending ya all my prayers!

Kelly, I am praying for your little girl (in my own agnostic fashion ;)) and I can't stop thinking about the two of you.

Just know that we're here for you. It must be very scary and painful for you. :(

We had a beautiful girl at our cat shelter years ago called Cee-Cee and she had her eye removed for the same reason. Within a week, she was jumping on chairs with no problem. She was finally adopted out to a wonderful furrever home.

Prayers coming your way.

I'm sorry to learn about Emma's eye problems and hope her eye doesn't have to be removed.

I know there are many cats with only one eye and they're coping well, but I'm sending my best wishes to her that things will work out for the best!

First, here is Emma about five minutes ago. I want to show you all her eyes, this picture really shows how her eyelids really are:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid86/p1292dd3f27b2a4258aa8db9153e7e685/faafbdae.jpg
See how the edges of her eyes (lids) look like they are more brownish? Well, that's because she doesn't have half of her eyelids in the outer corners. You can almost divide her eye virtically in half, the inner corners have an eyelid, her outer corners (half) don't. Because of this, the hair is growing into her eye, thus making the eye inflammed, irritated and allowing germs to get in.

Good news first!! :)
*They did give me a discount, making the first visits and tests only (only?) $109.50
*She passed her glaucoma test with flying colors and wont have to have an eye removed. :) :) :)
*She didn't have any new lesions on her eye.
*She was SUCH A GOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDD GIRL!! She literally purred and kneaded the entire time we were there (about one and a half hours). Such a sweetie! When we were checking in, I was holding her on the counter and she put her paws on my chin and gave me a kiss on my lips...I, of course teared up at once and the receptionist/tech squealed! She is such a doll!! :)
*The vet checked her vision and said that it was very good! No retna problems.
*The vet said she looks really healthy otherwise. :D Yay!!

Not horrible, but less positive news:
*Emma most likely has chlamydia in her eye that is swollen.
*The vet thinks this eye is suffering from some type of wound. (Maybe Phoebe caught her in the eyelid while playing??)
*Surgery will be needed when she's about four months old. (she's 13 weeks today)

The surgery:
Well, with my "I work at a veterinary hospital and do cat rescue" discount, it'll cost between $1073.48 and $1162.97. Luckily, we have at least a month to figure out how to come up/save for it. (*Guess this is how I'll finally learn that saving money is better than shopping when I want...doh! ;) ) I'm going to be picking up more hours at work, so that'll help.

They will be taking skin from under her eyes and will form the rest of her top eyelids with it. They will also take some of the third eyelid and attach it to the new lid, so it'll hopefully grow there too.

She'll get to wear a shiny, new e-collar until it heals, but will get to come home the same day. :)

Until then:
She's getting BNP-H ointment in her left eye twice a day, along with Artificial Tear ointment twice a day in the left, four times a day in the right eye. Lubrication in those eyes helps her not to be in pain or discomfort.

Thanks so much for your prayers! It looks like we know have an 8 cat household. My life now consists of work, school, David, cats, cats and more cats!! Oh well....they keep me happy and I can study with them. They'll keep me in line. :)

Regarding Phoebe's surgery. One of the other vets at work said he'd be able to do Phoebe's surgery for me. (It'll be 60% off, which will be sooooo much better and I can pay as I can...they know where I live. ;) ) I guess Phoebe's eyes aren't as bad and can be sewn together where they are missing.

Thanks again!! :)

Love,
Kelly

oops! Forgot the medical terms:

Her surgery is called "Agenesis of the Eyelid"

EDIT: The vet also said this was something that happened in the womb. Interesting, huh?

YAY!!! :D :D :D

You can't beat the power of PT prayers and thoughts (keep it going, folks, we still need it for the surgeries). I'm so happy for you and your family.

Wow Kelly, no wonder you don't have as much time for PT anymore!

First of all, I'm very glad to hear that Emma will not need to have her eye removed! And I want to thank you for keeping us all so well informed about these special case kitties! I'm even learning veterinary terms in this thread... SCORE! :p

I will certainly be keeping Emma and Phoebe in my prayers! :)
Please continue to keep us updated! ....I can't get enough of these cuties, more pictures when you have time, OK???

Kelly,

How many cats ?!?

Mmm. I need to catch up. Anyone got two spare cats ;)

I am happy that she can keep her bad eye and that an operation will help.

Ouch on the cost though.. Well keep praying.
