Do dogs get the equivalent of human colds? Hubby and I took Max & Annie up to the snow yesterday and played for several hours. When we got home, Annie had a warm nose, was kind of lethargic and had a slight cough.

Hi Teena! Cody had an upper resiratory infection already. My vet said they do not get colds from humans or visa versa, but catch them from other dogs, ie: sniffing stuff, playing... Since Cody LOVES the cold weather and snow I asked if he could get a cold that way and he said no. His nose gets runny just like mine does and he'll sneeze from burying his head in the snow and swallowing it...k

How is Annie doing? I hope she recovered quickly or you have taken her to the vet. A cough can be an indication of heartworm, so it might be best to go to the vet and see what he thinks.

She's doing great now! Think she just had a doggie cold. Thank you for your concern!

Teen...glad Annie is better! Cody had a bath at the vet yesterday and I took him home half wet. My mom was concerned he'd get sick but the vet showed her a pix of a GR with icicles dangling from it's jaw from, I guess jumping into cold water! Cody loves the cold, and unfortunatly for me, that's when he likes longer walks at night.BRRRR!! (notice I don't deny him, I just suffer for my Boy!)

Karen, you are like a real mom! My friend, Pam, said that no person or dog can catch cold from the cold, just from germs. She's a nurse. I think our own mamas did us an injustice as they made us think we would get sick if we are cold, and especially cold and wet! My nose runs in the cold and I'm sure that's why the puppy's nose runs too!
Can anyone tell me why their beautiful black noses turn pink in the winter? We just noticed it tonight. I was heartbroken, but both Honey and Lilly are pink on the end of their noses.

HELP!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif

Hi Logan.. I'm no pro, but I think I remember asking the vet a while back (before Cody got "Collie Nose") why his nose sometimes turns pink, and he said it's the pigment and occurs during different seasons. He said it was not serious, or anything to worry about. Kiss it and make it better!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Karen, do you think its because we talk too much???? Actually, I really appreciate the answers on the pink nose situation. Both of my girls have such lovely black noses and I have never seen them turn pink before..they are just a little pink and definitely not irritated. My yellow lab, Chuck, that we had in my married life always got a pink nose in wintertime now that I think about it. I haven't told any Chuck stories....see I could start a whole new topic. When my ex and I divorced about 8 years ago, Chuck stayed with him and Mimi came with me. Chuck lived to be 15 and had to be put to sleep last year due to severe arthritis and cancer. What a dog he was!

Yes it's purely pigmentation to prevent skin damage in the summer - a nose sun tan. Some dogs keep the colour, some change often and some only occasionally.
