View Full Version : Help - how do I help paralysed dog?

amanion
10-28-2000, 11:56 AM
My toy poodle was attacked by Rottweilers 3 days ago. She is eating etc, but is paralysed in all limbs. They are limp and floppy, with no feeling. The vet suspects radial paralysis in front limbs, and isn't really sure what is going on at the back. She is hoping for signs of improvement after a few days. We have been doing physio - massage, putting her legs to the floor in the hope of getting some reflex, moving the limbs around etc. But there hasn't been any voluntary movement.

Does anyone have any expertise in this, or any suggestions? She is 9 years old, and my beat friend.

Allison,
I do not have any suggestions, but
I just wanted to say how very sorry I am
to hear about your precious girl. My heart goes out to you.

I hope your precious little one recovers soon. If the rear paralysis is permanant, would she be a candidate for a doggie cart? I do hope she gets better.

Hi Amanion:

I'm so sorry to hear of the injury to your little pup. I think the best thing for you to do first is to get a definitive diagnosis of the problem so you know what you are dealing with. I don't know what area of the country you are in, but there are a lot of vets and large veterinary hospitals that have specialists who diagnos and treat this type of injury and disability should you feel the need for another opinion. I'm sure if your vet is a good one, she will refer you if she feels the need. Let me know where you live and maybe I can give you some names.
Also, go to www.doggon.com (http://www.doggon.com) They are a great group that specializes in all types of carts, wagons, hydotherapy aides, physiotherapy aides and also have other links that can assist you re: info. on the treatment and diagnosis of such injuries. Just wondering too, if she has any loss of bladder or bowel control? I hope that your baby heals and becomes whole soon. You and she will be in my heart and prayers. Hang in there. Sandra

This story breaks my heart!!!! There was recently a story in our local newspaper about a rottie who killed a sheltie that was walking on leash with his owner, right in front of his owner's eyes. A dog that I had in my childhood was killed in the same way. My dad was walking him on his leash and he was attacked by another dog running loose. The vet unfortunately was not able to pull him through. After reading the story in the paper and now hearing yours it brings back my memories too. I have to ask myself again "where were the owners of these dogs?????" I know that knowing that won't change what has happened but I just had to vent about people who let their dogs roam!! It really upsets me!!!!!! Anyway, I am sorry to say that I don't know anything really to suggest to help, but I just wanted you to know your little one will be in my thoughts and prayers. Maybe knowing that might help just a tiny bit. I hope so.

Hi,
Your story is sadly all too common. The lovely dog at home is all too often expected to act the same way when on his own and with no supervision. Come on people wake up!
Rest assured your vet is giving your dog the best chance possible. There is no surgery or medication that can repair damaged nerves, only time will tell if the damage is permanant or not. If permanant damage has been sustained in all four limbs then there is nothing your vet or you can do I'm afraid. Listen to your vet and follow your heart, you know what your dogs life was like before this incident and you will know whether your dog has an equal quality of life at the end of the day. Your vet will know when the time has elapsed when nerve regeneration would of happened if it's going to.
There is only a point to going to a specialist if there is a return of reflexes, however small.
My thoughts are with you and I wish you the best of luck.
To anyone who allows their dog to roam - your dog only behaves the way he does at home because of the influence you have over him. As soon as he is on his own and free you have no idea what he is capable of, or the dangers he is facing. If you have a dog it is up to you to supervise it and to make sure it is in a safe and secure enviroment when you are not around. Never underestimate your dog - it is after all just a wolf in dogs clothing.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I was feeling so lonely and desperate. It's just good to know people are out there.

The Rotties that attacked my Bella were in a yard. When we went past, they started rattling and snarling at the gate, and the gate swung open. I have known lovely rotties, but it seems the fashion round here for people to keep them in tiny yards, never take them out, and of course they go mad with boredom. People teach them to be savage because they think they will be better guard dogs. The owners should be shot. My maltese was attacked by another rottie only a few months ago, but survived.

Bella is no better in the legs, but she has started barking for me to come and get her if I go out of the room, since she can't be my shadow any more. I am spending most time nursing her and cuddling her in case it is our last days. She can only use one of the doggy wheels things (thanks for that) if she has front legs.

I live in a small town several hours drive from the nearest major centre, so the full on technical diagnosis thing is not really on. And as the vet said, if she does have a gross spinal injury, nothing can be done anyway so why put her through all the trauma of xrays etc. My poor baby. I have gone to sleep to the sound of her breathing next to me for 5 years. Truly my best mate.

Amanion please keep us posted on how things are going. I fell asleep last night thinking about your little one. Has the owner of these dogs expressed any remorse? Are they making any plans to assure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again?.....such as(securing the fence or bringing them inside when they are not supervised) My emotions go from sadness to anger and then back to sadness with this story. What a horrible thing to go through!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif

Hi Everyone

Great news - I took Bella to the vet today, and she got her front paw to move - ever so slightly but it moved. So little and yet so much. If only a front legs will work, then perhaps she can have a dog wheelchair, the dogs on the wheelchair site all look so happy. I have been dancing around the house singing "Bella moved her paw, paw". There is still such a long way to go, but there is hope now.

Pam, the dogs have been declared dangerous, and the owners will be taken to court and forced to confine them properly. They did come to apologise, but only because the council ranger told them I could sue the pants off them. I don't think they really cared one bit, and they certainly haven't been back to see how whe is, even though they live on the same block

Dear Alison and Bella
Yippppppe!!! I'm soo happy to hear of Bella's progress. Your heart must be soaring. I know you are suffering as well and want you to know how many people are rooting for you and Bella. What does your vet say about her progress? As she regains use of her front limbs, further evaluation would be very important to make sure she is fitted with the proper apparatus. "K-9 Carts" is another terrific maker of all sorts of carts, chairs, harnesses to help out disabled pups, and are designed by and custom made for each client by a veterinarian orthopedic specialist. I will say a prayer for you and your baby. Hope to hear more good news. Kiss her for me, OK?

I am so happy for you that their is hope.
I know it will be a long hall ahead for
both of you. You mentioned the carts if
she resumes the use of her front legs.
I saw a clip on the Animal Channel
that the owner made a home-made wheelchair
for his dog that lost the use of his back legs. The dog still had a wonderful
quality of life and chased balls and
did all the stuff dogs like to do.
Left me with a good feeling after watching
the clip.
We will be rooting for more good news. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Hi again,
That is great news and gives you real hope for the future.
Nerve regeneration is a very long process and nobody can tell you how full recovery will be. She may now come on in leaps and bounds or take a very long time. Fantastic start and all credit to you for giving her a chance!

Dear Alison

I just wanted to ask you if your vet put Bella on any steroids or anti-inflammatory drugs? Contusions of the spinal cord are often accompanied by swelling which can be greatly relieved by steroidal drugs. Has she done any xrays to rule out any fractures or any other testing? Did she encourage you to keep her quiet? Without definitively knowing the nature and extent of the injury I fear that exercising/moving her can aggrevate her injury. Is she peeing and pooping? Eating? I hope that your vet will refer you to the appropriate professionals to give Bella her best chance. Now that she is beginning motion,?sensation? this is such a critical time. I want so for little Bella to recover to the best extent possible! I think of you two every day. Love Sandra

Amanion I am so caught up with little Bella's story. It has really moved me. When I came home from work I checked Pet Talk right away to see how she is doing. I have to tell you that I am almost moved to tears with the slight movement in her one paw! Keep on improving little Bella!!!!! We are all rooting for you!! If positive thoughts and prayers could do it she would be running around by now. I know all of your other friends at Pet Talk agree with me too!

Does your vet say she is in any pain? Is she on pain medicines?

Give her a big hug for me and keep giving us updates. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Hi,

Bella is pretty much the same. slightly more front paw movement, and I'm sure I felt a pushback from one of her back legs when I did her physio this afternoon. we go back to the vet tomorrow, so will have more news then. She can't stand for me to leave her. I had to go out today, and left her with my teenage daughter, who often looks after her. She cried when I was gone, and was a mess when I got back, crying and shaking. I guess she is really scared. I got her as a 5 year od. Her original owner died, and she went to a breeder. They were lovely people, but she was so unhappy. When I got her she was quite neurotic, and we had come so far.

I have been doing a lot of soul-searching. I want to make sure in my heart that I am acting out of concern for her, not selfishness. She watches me with her beautiful brown eyes, but they are sad. She enjoys food, a cuddle, a walk (carry) round the yard. She closes her eyes in bliss when I scratch her ears. But I think she is frightened. It is such an awesome thing to look after a totally dependent creature. I have to guess when she is thirsty, hungry, uncomfortable. I'm so scared I am getting it wrong and making her miserable.

I think so long as she is showing improvement, it is worth carrying on. When she was pregnant, no-one suspected (the breeders let her go because she was infertile!), and she told me one day - she really needed me to know. So I think that if it is all too much for her, she will find a way of telling me. She isn't in pain, apart from her stiff neck, which will get better, so that is one thing. She is incontinent - just overflows. I have her on a towel on top of a waterproof sheet on top of a thinnish foam pad, so it is all quite easy to clean up, but I am always afraid her skin will get sore. I give her a good sponge everyday to clean stale urine etc from her coat.

I'll post an update when we have seen the vet. Thanks for caring.

Alison

Alison let me thank you so much for taking the time to write again for all of us. I am in tears, though, as I read of her suffering (it seems like right now it is her mental suffering that seems most severe). I am thankful she is not in pain. What an awesome responsibility but what a wonderful caretaker you are! I know that you don't consider yourself in that way because you are only doing what you are doing out of the depths of your love for Bella. I do hope that the vet has some good news and I agree with you to keep carrying on as long as there is progress, however how small. I would love to give Bella a kiss and tell her to keeping hanging on, but I will have to leave the kisses up to you. It would be nice if Bella could be Dog of the Day. I know we would all love to see this little sweetheart. We feel we already know her as she is in our prayers

Alison, I just found this post today and I am so sorry for what has happened to Bella and in turn to you. Such a scenerio is too difficult to even think about or comprehend and I don't know how you have managed to stay strong for Bella.

There is a song (A WORD SAD ENOUGH) written by Cathe St. Jean The lyrics are:
"I thought I knew all the words for heartbreak - I thought I heard all the words for pain - I thought I knew the tune to lonliness - But they didn't make a word sad enough - They didn't make a word bad enough for this one".

I will keep Bella and you in my prayers. God bless you for being such a caring guardian.

Oh Alison,
I just saw all of this tonight. I'm so sorry for you and for poor Bella.
I don't have all the medical insight necessary for your problems with Bella, but I know you will get good advice from your veterinarian. Our only experience with something like this was with our cat, Mimi, who I found in the bushes one day, unable to walk. We had no idea what had happened and the vet could only speculate that she had been hit by a car (one of the hazards of having an indoor/outdoor cat). I just knew she would have to be put to sleep. But, with antibiotics and a lot of prayers, she survived and healed completely. She is now 11 years old. All of this happened when she was about 5.
I just want you to know that we will pray for her healing and comfort in the interim. Keep us posted, please.

We went to the vet yesterday. She wasn't very pleased with Bella's progress. I think she was hoping for a quick recovery, and that is it is going to be real real slow, it might not be fair to Bella. She is a great vet - really caring and with a great insitinct for animals, I think. she always gives Bella a love up after her physio, and spends at least 40 minutes with us. This is rare in Australia, where its in and out in 15 mins.
So we have been a bit despondent. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif

But she has made good progress today, with a strong back leg pushback and a tail movement, so now we are more cheerful We have lots of nice cuddles, too. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Alison I just saw a very interesting story on MSNBC about alternative medicine for animals. It caught my attention because it started with a clip about a black standard poodle (I once had one.....my beloved Whitney). The dog in the clip had suffered a seizure/stroke and became paralyzed. They found a vet that used alternative medicine and, in this dog's case, acupuncture. This dog's story had a very happy ending and he looked to me to be fully recovered. (They didn't say how long it took). There were also two other animals with problems (a cat with diabetes and a rottweiler with hip dysplasia). The cat did well on a special diet but the rottie was not able to be helped. I gathered that most vets do not place much trust in this type of therapy but more of them are coming around. I thought of little Bella while I was watching this and just wanted to pass it on. Maybe it is something that could be tried? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Bella is a little bit better - now she moves one front leg - she sort of waves it around, and there is a bit of tail reflex. Her neck is a lot better now the soreness has gone, and she can look around a bit, but she still can't hold her head up, so she has it supported on a rolled up towel. She is still totally immobile. Her back legs don't move at all except for a bit of reflex pull=back in one leg, and all her muscles are wasting.

I have been having a good hard think about what to do. Somttimes Bella's eyes look sad, and they often look weary, but other times they are as bright as ever. The main thing she hates is being left around the house - she yips and howl and totally freaks if I take too long. So I am going to get one of those baby pouches people get for newborns, where the baby hangs at the front. I will carry her around with me, and she can look out.

I am going to a friend's pace in the country for 8 weks to finish my thesis, and leaving kids, dogs, cats, rats, bird, house etc with a friend. So Bella and I will go to the country and she can be next to me when I work. I will have lots of time to nurse her with noone else to look after, and we will have a great time. Then after Christmas, we will have another think, and see how life is for the little Bella boodle poodle. Whatever happens, she will have had the best chance, and we will have had a lovely time together.

I have thought about acupuncture - I will see if anyone does it around here.

Going back to the vet Thursday, so will post another update.

Your prayers and wishes are keeping us going - even the best friends don't always understand. Alison

Hi,
Back in town for a day. Bella is doing quite well, but it's a long porocess. She has limited movement in all her legs now, and the other day, in a fit of frustration, she actualy rolled onto her tummy as if to get up. On the down side, her neck muscles are still spasming really badly, and it is hard to get her head into any sort normal position. so it is still hard to eat and drink. Her front legs are up like little chicken wings, and have to be massaged to try to resretch the tendons. I am going to make her a sling to support her body with her feet just touching - I hope this will help normalise her legs. She wants to be up so much. Some days are really happy and positive, and others I just look at her and her poor neck and cry. But I think it will all work out. I've been telling her that she can't stay like this for ever, and she can't die, so she just has to get there.

Hope everyone and their dogs are well - I'll be in touch in a week or so. Alison

Alison,

You are a true blessing to that dog. You really are. I am so pained at reading your last post. I know how that feels, not the specific problems that Bella is going through but the same feeling of "what to do". It's painful either way, and from reading the horrible accident from the start, I know that you will make the right choice, you are going above and beyond to see that Bella is comfortable. I do know the look from those beautiful canine eyes that give mixed feelings and that's real hard. I have not posted yet about Bella, but I wanted to let you know that you have another sincere supporter to help you through this.

Here's something you may like to try - run a luke warm bath and let Bella float, with your support obviously. It is natural for dogs to use their legs when in the water and it will encourage her leg movement and strengthen her muscles. It will also give her a little excersise and something to think about. Keep us posted - the continued improvement is very encouraging. Acupuncture may help her neck at this stage too.

Alison, I think we all must check the "Dog Health" section daily to see if there has been any new posts from you. If there is ever a site that honors the Guardians of Dogs, you have to be the first honoree. Having dealt with two aging dogs in the past, I know how devastating the illnesses and infirmities are, but this is beyond comprehension. May God give you strengh to cope and guidance in knowing what is best for Bella.

Ditto for me too! I've also been checking the site for an update on Bella! I also think Carrie's suggestion is great! So glad to hear she is improving a bit! You both a definitely in my prayers!!

Sooooo relieved to have read a post from you Alison. Every day I would check, and my heart would kind of race, fearful of what I might read. How wonderful to see steady progress. I know how hard it is for you to see her struggling, but every step forward is great cause for hope and optimism. I hope your time away was healing for you both. I think you are just the BEST mom and I am sure much of Bella's healing is thanks to the tremendous emotional, as well as physical, support you give her. Hydrotherapy is a great means of passive exercise, and very comforting and relaxing. Maybe you can get in the tub with her!! Will be thinking of you both and praying every day for Bella! Please let us know how you guys are doing. With love...

Rachel, I just emailed Alison and Bella. Sent her love and caring from all of us. Hopefully she will post or email one of us soon. I've got mine and all the kids' paws crossed.
