Now that I work from a home office I have a problem of sorts. It is so hard to type and change diskettes and all the other things I need to do with 11 lbs. of purring cat on my lap!

(I suppose it could be worse --- Eddie is over 15 lbs. now   )

Any suggestions????

You're lucky you can work from home... I wish I could! But then again, I would never get any work done! Samantha will come nudge your arm when you're at the computer until you come play with her.

Count your blessings, Sara. Could be 11 lbs of hissing spitting cat like she was not too long ago. ;) :D

I know what you mean though, you just hate to move too much so you don't disturb them, but in the meantime you just get nothing done.

Reminds me of when we found kittens in our storage area here at work. As soon as they were big enough to be away from momma, I kept them in the office with me all day to socialize them. There were 3 of them, I couldn't get much of anything done when they decided their favorite place to nap was right on my desk, on top of all my papers. One of these days I'm just going to have to dig out those pics and get them scanned. :D But boss, she was napping, what was I to do? :D

What I have done in the past, with a former kitty, was to pull a chair up next to mine so that Mandy (an aby, of course) would be next to me but not ON my lap or near the keyboard. She was happy with that arrangement. My two kitties like to watch me type, but leave me alone for the most part. Miley likes to hang out on the monitor but that is about the extent of it. I hope to get a thin monitor some day, but know that it will not make Miley a happy camper.

I vote for additional seating in the office!:)

Perhaps you could improve your work ethic a little bit more? With some proper strength training, some stretches to improve your flexibility, a larger lap, more table space...and your problems would be solved.

Why! Why! Why! can't these people look at things from a cat's perspective?

When you figure it out let me know how solved it. I'll need to try it.

I can't do anything around here with out my little monkey kitten climbing all over me. I feel like a scratching post sometimes. She has to make her way up to my neck some way.

I am getting better at typing one handed though. Although I do have to redo a lot of it later. Thanks god for kitty naps. Get all the work you can done during naps.

Tigris is fine if he lies on a blanket on my desk. I think I could also propose Sallyanne's solution to him.

But Filou: when he thinks he must walk over the keyboard then you have to accept the innovative free style lyrics he writes:D :D :D

Sara, 11 lbs. on your lap is a bit much while working, but be happy she's not 7,5 kg. like Fister! I agree that a blanket on your desk or a chair close to you is an excellent idea, that way Edwina can still supervise. :D

Fister never sits on the lab, but he certainly knows which papers next to the keyboard are important - and sits on them!

I used to feel that way about the Late Mr. Scrappy , when he used to lie on my chestand purr and knead my chin. Eventually i would have to put him down on the floor , especially as he got heavier. But now he has been gone for 3 years and I would give anything to have him on my chest , purring about how much that he loved me!

I have a special chair next to mine as well. Works pretty well but doesn't help when either Emmitt or Moon feel like kneading bisquits against my leg  OUCH  that was Moon as we speak! ouch, she just got insulted and is now using MY leg as a scratching post. Dang, guess I'll put some more crunchies down for her. Sorry Sara, guess we're not much help here.

I work from home too.
My cats aren't really lap cats, but I need plenty of shelf and table area so they can supervise me.

My biggest problem....how to get them to stop shredding my paperwork (outside of actually filing it away in a timely manner)?
The excuse of "my cat ate it" doesn't fly too well.

But so distracting ... I like the chair idea, but what about buying a little mat and putting it up on the desk next to you? That way kitty can be nice and close but not in the way :)

I have found that such distractions are so much nicer than the "in office" kind...but I appreciate the dilemma. Ritz has a tendency to park her sizeable behind on the laptop - a message I think that says "cat needs attention-do the math".

However, I have made a purr-pad and old towel perch on top of the file cabinets next to the window, and another such perch next to the computer on top of the desk. I will, in desperation, warm up a towel in the dryer and place it on top of one of those spots to "lure" her highness - works every time and always results in a fairly long catnap .

I had to buy a new external modem recently because my internal one pooped out...thisnew one one makes a lot of noise. I came into the room to find Ritz had put her paw under it and lifted it up on its side...she was trying to get the noise to stop...had to put it inside a little suitcase to keep her from obsessing about it and trying to chew the phone/power cables!!

I've also come to realize that if she insists on interruption, and it is accompanied by a retrieved fake mousie dropped in my lap, it is time for a catfee break (coffee & cat play)!

My Chloe like to sit on my lap at the most inconvient times. It's like she is phycic or somthing. She's big girl at 23 lbs with her winter coat. She also like to jump on my back when I get out of the shower and I am drying off!!OUCH:eek: :D Corbyn and Billy like to chase the curser or lay all spread out on the desk.(like it is attractive or somthing) Corbyn also like to lay on top of the monitor.Don't ask me how he balances himself. :) :D

Although I heartily agree with the first suggestion you received "give up work" - here is how I solved my Rascal lap problem.

I have a chair right next to the desk that the computer sits on.

I recently bought Rascal a little bed. Funny how they just know......he loves it. So it is easy to transfer his heavy body into the bed and his feelings are not hurt when I have to get back to work.

I have tried typing while he was on my lap - and then I would see what I just typed because I didn't realize my fingers were on the wrong keys - pretty funny.

Edwina HAS a nice comfy chair that is only an arm's reach from me. I'm wondering if it is the heat. We have it programmed to go WAY down during the day...which doesn't bother me but may as winter moves in...;) I think I'll try to explain to Edwina that curling up with Eddie will provide as much, if not more, heat than my lap! Think I'll convince her???????

Yeah, but sometimes only a mommy lap will do! I think it is more likely that HH will convince Eddie to come and do the same :)

Ritz is not so much a lap cat as she is a laptop cat - she likes to sit ON the laptop when it is shut and turned off...still haven't figured that one out

Rocky is 16.5 pounds so I know your delimma well. He seems to think he can get atop my lcd monitor. It's very very thin- there's just no hope- but he keeps trying.

Now that the evenings are colder, both the boys like to snuggle up on the bed. Also running out of room there.

You may just have to get a bigger desk:rolleyes:
