Last Friday night, I stayed the night at my sisters place. She was babysitting her friends dog, Layla.

Jenn, my sister, thinks Layla is a Sheltie/German Shephard mix.

She's about 6 month's old and totally adorable. Melissa, Layla's mommy, rescued her from an abusive situation.

She is now trying to crate train her. Well, Melissa's roomate thinks that keeping a dog in a cage is cruel and will let Layla out and will then leave. Melissa came home to find Layla very sick. She rushed her to the vet and they found she had gotten into chocolate.

So now Jenn babysits Layla when she can.

Here's a puppy pic Melissa shared with me:

And here are some pics I took of Layla.

I'm going to email Melissa and point her to Pet Talk. :)

Jenn also has a cat and two foster kitties. You can meet them here.. Jazz and the Fosters (http://207.44.135.130/talk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35118)

This is about the cutest baby I've ever seen. Looks kind of fuzzy and soft! Love this picture.

It's a good thing Layla's mom has a good friend in your sister and your sister is a good person to do this for her friend. I would leave my babies with a sitter if it were possible.

Crate training is not cruel! Sometimes it's necessary for the pup's safety and for the safety of your home. I keep two of mine in crates during the daytime when I'm gone. Right now I can't trust them outside the crate when no one is there.

The other three run loose during the daytime (more than likely they sleep loose during the daytime). I can trust them to not potty in the house nor will they shred something or someone.

She is adorable!!!!!

Cages are not cruel. When I had fosters, we had a huge cage for their use. After they left to be adopted, Shiloh decided that she liked the cage, herself. I left it up in the family room and she enjoys sitting in it. Neither Killian nor Shiloh need to be caged, but Shiloh likes it in there!!

SO CUTE!!!! Aside from her ears, her snout is very long like Sam's. It makes me wonder if maybe Sam has sheltie in her. Who knows with that dog!! But Layla is absolutely adorable... I want her!!! :)

I used to think cages were cruel too. They're anything but. :) It's how you treat the time in the cage that makes it cruel or not.

Layla is beautiful!! I really hope her mom joins PT cause I want more pictures!! :D

What an absolute gem!!:D

And if crates were cruel - why does Leo always crawl into his when he is tired or just wants to be alone?? I rarely shut him in, but he is likes it in there. She should remember that dogs are den animals and crates make them feel more safe and secure, especially when they are alone.

It is so nice of your sister to help out. She must be a very special person. :)

Hi! I'm Layla's mommy. I am HAPPY to report that she is finally feeling greatly improved. If anyone has any hints for me with crate training I would love to hear your advise. I was raised with cats so this is all new to me. She is getting better with being in her crate (she doesn't bark as much) but I want it to be happy in there for her. I put her food and water in there when I'm here so that she is comfortable going in and out and just being in there. She does just lay in there sometimes if I'm in the room. Is this right to do?

Ohhh she's so adorable! Welcome to pet talk!

I think you're heading the right track. Definitely try making it a good place for her to be in. When Kai was being crate trained, we let him go in and out while we were around but when we weren't home, we'd leave him in his crate with food, water and dog safe toys.

I think I see Collie/Shepherd? She does look like a sheltie/gsd..but a gsd mounting a sheltie or vice versa is hard to picture lol.

We aren't sure...definetly shepard...guesses anyone...she's 6 months and 22lbs they think she'll be about 30 lbs when she's full. I don't know breeds very well so i'd love to hear your guesses...
our guess is sheltie/shepard...i said the same thing about the mix...very um interesting site to see...

oh wow she must be tiny. Do you know how tall she is from the ground to her shoulders? Kai's at 17.5 inches and 38 pounds and Kaedyn's 14.5 inches at 16 pounds. A typical sheltie is probably around 14 inches and 25 pounds or so...but a gsd is 70 pounds or so I think. hmm...maybe half gsd half sheltie/smaller dog?

I have no idea but the look works for her...she is loved by everyone she meets...including cats and babies.

I can't get her to hold still enough to measure her maybe 14 to 16 in or so

Hey Lissa! :D Glad you made it over here. Now get Jenn to sign up. ;)

I'm so happy to hear that Layla is doing better. Sounds like the crate training is going well. If she's going into her crate on her own, then that is a good sign.

I put Kia's favorite toys in with her when I'm gone. I give her a little water too and sometimes a treat, but never food, bones, or rawhides. I have a fear of her possibly choking while I'm gone.

Kia knows, that when I say 'Crate', she's to get in and 99% of the time, does. :)
