View Full Version : What kind of food does your cat eat?

I'm researching some foods that I can put Sara on as soon as I get a job so I can pay for it. At the moment my mom pays for the food, so she gives her the most discusting food ever. :( It makes me feel terrible, and I want Sara to be happy and healthy.

The foods that I found that I like so far are Innova and Felidae. Does anyone have any comments on these? I know that Innova has garlic which makes it a bit iffy for me. I'd also like to give her some homemade and/or fresh things along with the food.

What kind of food does your cat eat, and does he/she enjoy it, and what are the affects it has had on the kitty?

Thanks in advance! :)

Casper and Kitty eat Hill's Diet dry food, and Tessa and Felix Hill's kitten dry food. Once a week they get a bag of wet food as a treat, it's by Nutro.

Effects? Well, shiny, soft coats, less poop in the litterbox (compared to market brands), and the cats eat less because the food fills them better. :)

Iams kitten & adult. Sammy gets kitten, Dudley gets adult. For a while Dudley was on a prescription diet to get his weight back up.

Nakita is on a combo of Innova and Wellness - both wet and dry foods.

On the topic of garlic, only fresh garlic that is not processed is toxic to animals. The toxic elements are eliminated during the manufacturing processing of these foods. If it were not safe, Innova and other brands would have had an earful from irate owners of sick pets!

Thanks for replying, and for the info! :) Thanks for telling me that Russian Blue. :) How much does Innova cost where you are? And how big is the bag? :)

Sammy and Romeo eat Royal Canin dry. Romeo eats Pro Plan wet
twice a day, because he is positively starving all the time:rolleyes:. Excellent results with the Royal canin. Very soft shiny coats, and a fairly stinky-less litter box!

My cats eat Nutro Complete Care Weight Management Formula with some Felidae mixed in. They love the Nutro but aren't too keen about the Felidae. They all have beautiful shiny coats, less stinky poop, and they're very happy healthy cats. :)

What is *acorn* Friskies?

Kylie gets Royal Canin but has become pudgy and picky so I bought the Science Diet Hairball Light. But haven't started it yet. She also gets wet food occasionally.

what was the name of the first cat you ever had??
What was the name of the first cat you have ever owned in your life that you can remeber.

My very first cat was named Fuzzy Wazze and he was a pitch black cat with orange eyes, he dyed because he had bladder crystals ..

NEVER FEED NONAME BRAND CAT FOOD they can cause really bad problems in your cat. my first cat dyed because we fed him no name brand cat food.

Friskies might as well be a no- named cat food. It isn't the best quality either! :(

I think she means her new cat will be "Accorn"? I don't mean this to be rude, but as a high school senior, your spelling really has me afraid for your future. :( :( :(

Noah, Noel & Basie get Royal Canin's Indoor

Olivia gets Royal Canin's Lite

Micah is on a combo of the Feline Instincts Raw diet and Innova wet

Hermione gets Royal Canin Kitten

The foster babies get Royal Canin Baby Cat and Nutro Kitten wet food

Yea, feeding time (3 times a day) is an event at our house, complete with my supervision. ;)

TM this is a quote of yours from another cat thread.

Not to be rude, but Friskies isn't that much, if any, better than a no name brand cat food. Friskies isn't very healthy for your cat and could to lead to problems later in life.

I'm confused. What is no name catfood? Is that a brand or does she mean generic when she says no name?

Yumi has Purina One , light or weight controll as it is the only food she does not bring up again strait away :( (we have been to the vets and they were no help) so we will stick with the Purina, Yumi coat is also ALOT nicer now (not so dry)

oh Yumi will also have some tinned Purina Tuna as a treat maybe 4-5 times a week, and some uncooked steak or chicken.

She does have a disability, called dyslexia. A spell check would NOT help, because she sees letters and numbers backwards. Even reading is difficult when you have dyslexia, so a spell check does nothing for you.

"Accorn"?
Sorry, I just don't understand this?? Her kitty's name is Acorn...it's her kitty that she is being given when she moves out.

Thanks for all your comments. Unfortunatly, Sara is on a no-name brand. :( My mom won't listen to me. I hate this food, it's so terrible. I've been trying to give her more of the wet food my mom has been getting lately, but my mom still says to mix in the dry food. Luckily, Sara hasn't been eating the dry as much as she used to. I hope my mom takes a hint. :( I can't wait until I get a job and can afford to give my baby the best. :)

Friskies is one of the worst cat foods on the market....

While I think it's great that you are trying to look out for a friend, spell check does help. I have dyslexia as well, and I don't use that as an excuse to be lazy. I also have several friends who are dyslexic and we still take the time to make sure things are spelled correctly. Now if I actually have to handwrite something that's a whole different story, I have such a hard time with manuscript. But with typing spell check does work even if you are dyslexic, if you spell the word wrong then it gives you the correct spelling it's not that difficult.

To answer the original question, my two are currently on Science Diet both canned and dry. They seem to be doing very well on it, they are healthy have beautiful coats and shiny eyes. However I think I will soon be switching them to either Wysong or Wellness because my boss sells these two brands, she has a pet food buisness. They are both a little better quality then Science Diet, however I still think Science Diet is a great food.

I feed my 4 cats Hill's Hairball Control, Sensitive Skin (and sometimes Oral Care as well, but they tend to get tired of that one) and currently Hill's kitten food too because of Boomer. :)

Well I have to agree with Laura. There are people that have graduated college with dyslexia and with the help of computers. Become engineers, doctors etc.
I am sorry I was confused. I didn't realize she was naming/had named her cat Acorn. :(

Whiskas isn't really any better.. that's like going from feeding your dog Kibbles N Bits to something like Mighty Dog. They are all really bad foods.

I do use the Whiskas wet food packets. And have added Meow Mix to Kylies food once, but do not do it regularly as Whiskas, Meow Mix and Friskies are just as bad as Walmarts Special Kitty!
When I see people buying that and Ol Roy I just cringe. :(

I know a few people here use the Whiskas pouch food as a treat, I've used them a few times as a treat and my cats love it. But I would never use Whiskas as my cats main diet.

This discussion about "bad" cat foods has me really worried. The ONLY "specialist" cat food available here in Bahrain is IAMS, and Ally loathes it. I have tried mixing it with her regular food a few bits at a time, but she picks them out!

She will ONLY eat Meow Mix and Kit-n-Kaboodle. She also refuses to eat any wet food. I have tried every brand on the shelf, plus all those new ones (which come in the little individual sachets), and she just tries to "bury" them.

The problem here in Bahrain is that it is such a tiny place, and we only have one specialist pet store (which has not had a new container of stock delivered since the start of the Iraq war!!!). They are out of stock of everything - even kitten formula, cat shampoo, spray repellent - EVERYTHING!!! So the ONLY places to buy pet supplies are the supermarkets, and they just stock the commercial brands like Whiskas and Friskies etc.

Ally will also not eat chicken or steak (either raw or cooked). The only "human" food she eats is ham, and occasionally cucumber and lettuce (I think she has an identity crisis and imagines that she is a rabbit:rolleyes: )

I think in this case, I wouldn't worry *too* much. What does your vet say? If she is doing well and not gaining a lot of weight (which poor brands tend to do) I think she should be fine. I used to always feed "cheap" cat foods, because I never knew any better. Then I talked to my vet about it, and found a food that works best for my girls. :)

Also - Ally eat's cucumber?? That's SO FUNNY!!!! Hehe.. my cats won't eat any vegetable! :D

Thanks Nomilynn,

Ally's weight does need to be kept under control. The Dilmun's natural "build" is incredibly thin and light, so by her breed's standards she IS on the heavy side! Although IMHO she looks healthy as she is now - she lost weight when I put her in a cattery over the summer, and I just thought she looked like a little bag of bones!

Yep she loves cucumber - she just chews on a big chunk, and licks off the juice - she doesn't like it sliced up.

Her other strange food is CHERRIES - she loves them too!

I used to feed Toby Friskies - until PetTalk showed me the light ;) I then realized that I had to get better foods. I am now giving them Science Diet - I tried Felidae and the bag almost full is still sitting in the cupboard - they didn't like it!! I have to mix it with Science Diet to get them to eat it!

Most of the time, I think you get what you pay for in this world.

My boys love a can of Fancy Feast or a foil of Whiskas. Just like I love a large fries from McDonalds. Doesn't mean it is healthy for us to eat on a regular basis. So, I try to recognize what is a "treat" and what is healthy.

For cats, a general rule: corn is bad; byproducts are bad.

The canned ProPlan that my boys get twice weekly has huge chunks of salmon and fish- skin on. They love it and I can see that it is more natural and healthier than the other stuff.

I feed Eukanuba Mature , Science Diet Senior and Nutro Max Complete Care Senior. And Royal Canin for Older Cats! Some like some more than others , some like them all. On disability I sometimes buy the one that has the best Promotion.Like a free Bed or a Rebate, but it is always premium Food!

I don't think you should worry since you are extremely limited to what you can give her!!!
