Scanners - what should I look for?

I'm buying a scanner and need to know what's desirable and what I don't need. I have a PC and use Windows 98. I've looked on Ebay and have seen several scanners with several different options and I’m just clueless.

Any help would be appreciated! :D

All the Epson scanners are very good. I use a Perfection 636 but they have newer ones. Mine is 4 years old, an antique by now, still going strong. They come with a lot of photo manipulation software. Go to the Epson Website,
http://www.epson.com and you can look at the compatibility issues.
