I have 2 one day old purebred black lab babies. Their mom just got sold for $3000    The owner of the mom couldn't be bothered with the puppies and told the boarding kennel where the mom was being boarded to throw the pups away :( :( :( So the kennel people brought them to my shelter and I've spent ALLLLLLL day feeding 10 puppies and helping set them up to go to seperate foster homes. We've split them up into groups of 2 for the first 3-4 weeks. Then we will put them back together in groups of 5 for socializing and playing.

I have a boy and a girl. I named them Sebastian and Piper :) Skylar already wants to go back on the bottle now that he sees me babying them. He also wants to lay on their heating pad. I keep trying to tell him he's a big boy now!

Sebastian on the left, Piper on the right:

Especially if they have Skyler (I've fallen in love with your cat what can I say). But once again you rock!!!

Thanks guys :) :o

I'm in my normal panic mode since these babies were just born yesterday and have not had their mother's milk except once. I bought special newborn formula with colostrum in it.

I pray they will be strong enough to make it. They aren't eating as much as I would like them to, but they are acting fine. The first 2 days are always the hardest. Trying to get them adjusted to the bottle, the new environment, etc!

I swear, I'm going to go bald from all this stress!

I just had to mosey on over! I love black labs.

They are adorable! I can't believe how tiny they are! How cruel is that, just dumping them to be thrown away! And tearing the pups away from their poor Mum who would be pining away for her little babies.

10 pups in one litter????????????

was to want those pups to die.

can find a surrogate mother for the pups.

YAY! Sebastian was not eating too well, but I just got a good feeding into him :D I was basically force feeding him but now he's got good sucking action. And Piper is still eating well.

I noticed some stains on my shirt then remembered I spilled coke all over myself sometime during the night because I was too tired to aim into my mouth

Reece and Lolly are very interested. When I had both the puppies out yesterday, I caught little Reece laying in their crate!! And Lolly is watching over them like a hawk!

Aly, something has been bugging me about the boarding kennel and the woman who owned the mother of the pups.

She can just do this......say, I don't want the pups - dump them?
Is she not held financial responsible in any way? (she has an extra $3,000. now right?).

Many people including yourself are going the extra mile for these babies....and it seems your shelter should be compensated in some way.

Is this woman a professional breeder? I would think it would be handy if the word got out about her.

Also, if the mother is so valuable, why aren't these pups valuable too? Or was the father from "out of town"?

aly
08-07-2003, 05:41 PM
Gini,

I actually have no idea. I only got bits and pieces of the story in my ear while I was concentrating on taking care of the puppies. I am pretty sure it was a professional breeder, but this pregnancy was accidental. And something about how he couldn't sell the mom if she was nursing. The dad is also a champion show dog I believe. We do know he was a pure Lab also.

:D

The babies and I are doing great. They just turned 8 days old today and I've had them for a week. I am finally able to switch them to feedings every 3-4 hours instead of every 2 hours.

I think I should rename Sebastian to Chunk because that boy is HUGE! He's so much bigger than little Piper and he's quite the pig. Piper is the vocal one of the two. She cracks me up because she reminds me of a roly poly (or however you spell it). Sometimes she'll roll over on her back and get stuck, hehe.

And pictures? Did someone say pictures????? ;) :D

Hehehe, I keep holding the puppies up to Lolly and telling her that she was that small one time. I'm having a hard time imaging any of my animals that small.

Skylar loves the pups. At first, he REALLY wanted to get them out of the way because he still wanted to be the baby. But he's been hanging out with my big tough foster boy kitties, so he is starting to enjoy being bigger and tougher than at least someone in the house. He lets them nurse on him and crawl on him.

Geez, I just got back from the emergency vet. Piper scared me out of my wits.

I was feeding her and she spit out the bottle, and a little came out her nose. It sounded like she was choking a little but that might have been my imagination. I burped her and listened to her lungs to see if I could tell if there was fluid in them. Then she just sort of went limp in my hands and I FREAKED out. I literally screamed, threw the bottle, and took both her and Sebastian to the emergency vet as fast as I could. I was sobbing the whole way there because I knew that she was dead or would be soon. When I got there and we took the sheet off that I had covering the crate, little Piper was just fine. She was crawling around looking for the rest of her meal. Turns out she had just fallen asleep in my hands and I panicked :o :o :o

The vet told me that I didn't do anything wrong and sometimes it just happens that they aspirate.

The puppies turned 4 weeks old on Tuesday and are doing good. They are doing a bit better eating on their own, but still need about 4 bottles a day because they aren't eating enough on their own.

It is a very incredible experience, but somewhat challenging and VERY TIRING. I've had bronchitis the whole month that I'd had them. I finally went to the doctor and got some medicine so hopefully I'll get better soon.

Its hard to get pics because they are so squirmy and wiggly, but I will try to get some good ones today :)

I played w/ a 4 wk old dachsund yesterday...SOOOO tiny! (He was the runt.)

It'll be interesting to compare the size between your two and this little fellow. :)

Piper is probably about the same size as the Doxie, if not smaller. I swear she's not growing. Sebastian is a chunk though!

I am fosterring a coon hound that apparently noone wants becase she has a hernia.:( but I have had her for about a month and she went to her first dog picinic last sunday and she had a blast. Noone careeed that she has the hernia. Ruthie the hound has grown on us. adn we believe she might pick us to be her adoptive parents. She live up to her breed too she is all hound if you have met her you may have heard her hound bark ( well its not reeally a bark its more like a bayish howel and at times she sounds like she is an old bitty because it is like she will forget how to bark and it will sound kroky. We all love to floppy ears and her slinder body I don't think I would be able to handle if someone were to come and adopt her from me.:( :(
