Schwarzenegger Will Run in Recall Election

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that he will run for governor, after weeks of speculation that he would not enter the gubernatorial race.

Schwarzenegger, a moderate Republican, announced what he called a "difficult" decision this afternoon at the local NBC studio, during the taping of "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno."

At a press conference after the taping, the actor said he made the decision last week after returning from Mexico City, the last stop on his promotional tour for "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." He said his wife, Maria Shriver, who had been reported to oppose his candidacy, supported his decision.

Schwarzenegger said he sees a variety of problems that he hopes to help fix, including the fact that businesses are leaving California, the state has a "record-breaking budget deficit" and an education system that he said is "last in the country."

He also pointed out that his personal fortune would allow him to run without fundraising.

"California is run by special interests … and we have to stop this," he said. "I will go to Sacramento and clean house."

As he left the press conference, he told reporters who were still peppering him with questions: "I'll be back."

On the Leno show, the studio audience whooped and cheered after he made the surprise announcement. In the course of his interview with Leno, the popular movie star and former bodybuilder invoked several of the lines that made him famous, including, "Say hasta la vista to Gray Davis," and "When I go to Sacramento, I'm going to pump it up."

"The people are doing their job in California, the politicians are not doing their job," Schwarzenegger said. "The person who has failed the people more than anyone is Gray Davis and that is why I'm going to run for governor."

Schwarzenegger also joked that his wife, whose mother is a Kennedy, would vote Republican for the first time this October.

Political pundit Arianna Huffington also announced today that she would enter the race as an independent.

"A friend just called and said, 'It's the Hummer versus the hybrid,' " Huffington said late today, just after hearing that Schwarzenegger had announced he would enter the race.

"But the question for Arnold, and for any Republican running, is whether he is going to take on the Bush administration and the policies that have so damaged the state," Huffington said.

She said the centerpiece of her campaign would be to "connect the dots," between the Bush administration and the current situation in California, notably the budget crisis and energy scandals.

"He will have to run as a Bush Republican, which he is," she said.

This morning, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein ruled out the possibility of running on the ballot, killing Democratic hopes that her popularity would boost their chances of a replacement candidate in the event that Gov. Gray Davis is recalled.

In a statement this morning, Feinstein, 70, said she was "flattered" by the numerous calls for her to run in the October election, but that she could serve the state best in her current position.

Schwarzenegger's decision also threw into question the candidacy of former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, who had indicated that he would not run against the actor. Riordan, a moderate Republican, always maintained that he would not run against Feinstein, also a longtime friend.

Feinstein this morning called the recall effort "misguided," and "frivolous" and criticized state Rep. Darrell Issa, the Republican candidate who funded the recall effort with more than $1 million dollars of his own money.

"First and foremost, I deeply believe the recall is a terrible mistake and will bring to the depth and breadth of California instability and uncertainty, which will be detrimental to our economic recovery and decision-making," she said in the statement.

"This recall demonstrates that virtually anyone with $1.5 million can hire professional petition gatherers certain to produce enough signatures to force a recall of any state elected officials. This sets a terrible precedent which ought to cause us all to think very carefully."

Feinstein, who has been a prominent figure in California politics for more than three decades, has served as a senator since a special election in 1992, after she lost a gubernatorial race to Pete Wilson.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove) said Tuesday she would consider running only if any other prominent Democrats did not.

Huffington's indecision fueled speculation for weeks. Her ex-husband, Michael, a former Republican congressman, took out papers to run, but has not announced his decision; Arianna Huffington maintained before today that she would not run against him because of their children.

The deadline to file is 5 p.m. Saturday.

Huffington's announcement today was one "I never thought I'd hear myself say," said the columnist and author who was born in Greece. She said that Californians should "vote their conscience," but if the recall was approved, should be used as an opportunity to "clean house."

"My decision is in no way founded on British intelligence," she joked in front of an audience of supporters. "I'm not a conventional candidate, but these are not conventional times If we keep electing the same candidates funded by the same special interests, we'll never get out of this mess."

Feinstein said this morning that most of the candidates who have come forward so far have "no background or knowledge of the state's enormous portfolio of issues."

"This is a time when our attention should be focused on working in a bipartisan manner to solve the state's fiscal crisis, to fix our public schools, to increase public safety, and to restore California's economy," she said. "Sadly, the state is instead going to be engaged in an election that is becoming more and more like a carnival every day."

She reserved her harshest criticism, though, for the recall's backers, who she said have launched a political battle that is sure to have "dark repercussions."

When it's a celebrity spouting liberal beliefs, conservatives basically foam at the mouth talking about how stupid and inexperienced they are, but when they are republicans they're all for it. What happened to actors not being qualified to have political opinions/ambitions??

That would be Ohio...actaully he was on the radio hear when he was thinking about it and a lot of his ideas made sense. He was in politics before, as mayor of Cincinnati. If I remember right though, he got into a bit of trouble...


I think Arnold in CA would be could be cool. May intimidate criminals a bit :)

On the Kennedy subject, I find that a little creepy. The news this morning was going through his bio, childhood etc. He says that when he was young he wanted to be famous, and marry a Kennedy. Wow, if I was a Kennedy I think that might feel a little creepy. He didnt marry Maria, he married a name? (that she doesn't actually have I know, but still....)

Some years back the mayor of Portland was a former Bartender (hint-hint Richard) - and while he might not have been the best mayor in the world, he wasn't the worst either. The current mayor is finally stepping down next year. She is a carreer polititian who has done a spectacular job at creating a hostile atmosphere for businesses (can you say "highest unemployment in the nation anyone?:mad: ).

Weren't the Republicans just telling us the other day that celebrities should keep their mouths shut about politics? Didn't they blast the Dixie Chicks, Janeane Garofalo, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon and every other artist who spoke out about the war in Iraq? Wasn't the argument that fame doesn't confer experience, wisdom or competence?

Obviously that was then -- and today is Arnold. Of course, he's no longer a B-movie actor or ex-bodybuilder -- he's a "businessman" now. And like all businessmen he believes that there could be nothing simpler than straightening out the government with a loud voice and a spreadsheet. As Schwarzenegger explained to Jay Leno, he's going to "clean house" in Sacramento, presumably without the use of any automatic weapons or runaway semi trucks.


Today's best capsule story profile reacting to his surprise "Tonight Show" announcement appears in the L.A. Times. Among the astonished viewers were not only the actor's advisors but Richard Riordan, the former Los Angeles mayor and Republican moderate who believed his close friend Schwarzenegger would defer to his ambitions. (Hasta la vista, Dick!) Schwarzenegger's sudden announcement must infuriate Darrell Issa (who weepily dropped out today), Bill Simon Jr., and all the other wing nuts who have spent time and millions promoting the recall. So scared of him that they've rolled over and peed on their bellies like submissive hounds, as Gene Lyons would say, those conservative candidates all now claim to be "welcoming" his entry into the contest. Still, I suspect that the state's conservatives will soon attack Arnold. His liberal attitudes toward abortion and gay rights are intolerable to the Republican right (whose Clinton-hating crackpot wing is also likely to remember his denunciations of impeachment and Kenneth Starr).

For Schwarzenegger, the most unfortunate conclusion to a race with scores or even hundreds of candidates could be "victory." Ill-equipped to govern, lacking a mandate, and facing the same problems that are undoing Gray Davis, he may end up in the same category as his old pal from "Predator," Jesse Ventura -- whose popularity plunged after Minnesotans realized what they had done to themselves by electing him.

It's alphabet soup on state's ballots

SACRAMENTO -- Listen up, kindergartners. Put your ABCs out of mind. Even the alphabet is getting an official makeover as part of the California recall election. It now goes something like this (when singing, the familiar melody is still OK): R, W, Q, O, J, M, V, A, H, B, S, G, Z, X, N T, C, I, E, K, U, P, D, Y, F and L.

The race to replace Gov. Gray Davis, often likened to a carnival, looked more like a political version of "Wheel of Fortune" on Monday as a state elections official, assisted by a part-time percussionist from a Latin jazz band, determined the random alphabetical order of the candidates on the Oct. 7 ballot.

"I asked if I could break into song, but they wouldn't let me," said the percussionist, Miguel Castillo, who also works as an analyst in the Secretary of State's Office and as the manager of a local rock band. "They needed someone with experience in front of the camera. The first time I performed live on stage, I was scared to death. You choke on your words."

It is still not known who has officially qualified to appear on the ballot as a possible successor to Davis, should he lose the recall vote. At last count, 195 candidates had submitted the necessary paperwork, with more names still trickling in Monday from county elections offices.

Once the final tally is official, probably not until Wednesday, the new alphabet will be used to place them in order. The secretary of state, Kevin Shelley, said Monday that 96 of the candidates had so far been checked out as legitimate and were likely to be among those certified.

But Shelley could not predict what the final list might look like or how such an unwieldy ballot would play with the voters.

"Let me be candid," Shelley said, "there are going to be problems. Like in any situation, you play with the cards you have been dealt."

Castillo's was a nonspeaking part Monday, but no matter. The percussionist expertly churned a bingo-style barrel spray-painted gold and crammed with 26 plastic film canisters, each containing a different letter of the alphabet.

The state official joining him, Shirley Washington, who works in the press office for the secretary of state, assumed the Vanna White role, plucking the canisters one by one and reading the letters aloud. She did so in a slimming black suit and a classic pearl necklace under the scrutiny of a former director of the California lottery, positioned just off stage.

"This is now the new alphabet," Terri M. Carbaugh, an assistant secretary of state, declared from a lectern after the final letter, "L," was drawn.

Though Carbaugh did not do so, it would have been an appropriate moment to extend condolences to Dick Lane of Santa Clara County and Gary Leonard of Los Angeles, two candidates who will never appear at the top of the ballot under a dizzying rotation system that assures a different candidate occupies the marquee position in each of the state's 80 Assembly districts.

Using the current list of 96 qualified candidates, for example, the first name on the ballot would be David Laughing Horse Robinson, an artist from the Central Valley. He would be followed by Ned Fenton Roscoe, a Libertarian from Napa, and Daniel C. Ramirez, a Democrat from Imperial County.

Some of the race's biggest name contenders would not show up until well down the roster. Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger would be in the 45th spot; Lt. Cruz Bustamante in the 43rd. Bill Simon Jr., the Republican candidate for governor last November, would be 48th, and Peter V. Ueberroth, the former baseball commissioner, 74th.

But that lineup would only apply to the first of the state's 80 Assembly districts, a mostly rural area that covers the state's far northwest corner, including Humboldt and Mendocino counties, a place where redwoods and wild animals outnumber people.

According to the rotation system, the top name on the ballot falls to the bottom in each successive district, so that each of 80 candidates on the ballot gets the best billing in one district. So keeping with the example of the 96 candidates, Robinson would drop to No. 96 in the second Assembly district, also in rural Northern California, and so on.

With such a system, it is hard to know where a candidate might want to land in the alphabetical tally.

If the election for governor last November is any guide, Democratic candidates like Bustamante should be hoping for a shot at the top of ballot in Assembly Districts 45, 46, 47, 48 and 52. All of them are in Los Angeles County and all of them voted overwhelmingly for Davis. In his best showing statewide, the governor got 83 percent of the vote in District 48.

For Republicans, the odds-on favorites based on the same election would be District 32, which covers parts of Kern and San Bernardino counties; District 71 in Orange and Riverside counties; District 66 in Riverside and San Diego counties; District 29 in Fresno, Tulare and Madera counties; and District 73, in Orange and San Diego counties.

All those counties voted heavily for Simon. He had his strongest showing in District 32, where he won 65 percent of the vote.

Shelley, the secretary of state, said the random alphabetical drawing has been performed for statewide elections since 1975, after court rulings that determined the standard alphabetical listing of candidates was not constitutional. Studies at the time, Shelley said, showed that the name at the top of a ballot typically enjoys a 5 percent advantage over the others.

"We do it prior to every election," Shelley said. "No one ever comes."

Until Monday.

At least a dozen television cameras recorded Washington's every move. A crush of radio reporters huddled beneath the bingo barrel, their microphones extended as close as possible to capture the clickety clack of the tumbling canisters.

"We need the sound! We need the sound!" one of them demanded, as elections officials slid the barrel closer to them.

The media and public interest was so great -- even a few lesser-known candidates made an appearance -- that the event was moved down the hall in the secretary of state's building from a small conference room into an auditorium.

There, Shelley was introduced with Pat Sajak fanfare (his entrance from stage right was announced in advance for the cameras) and then fielded questions. Afterward, a "five-minute intermission" was announced for journalists to prepare for the drawing.

"This is a big test for California," Shelley said before exiting stage left for San Francisco, where his wife is expecting their second child. "History will be our witness."

LOS ANGELES - The Game Show Network has found a reason to get into politics: the California recall, which will be spoofed in an October special.



"Who Wants to Be Governor of California? The Debating Game" will include a political debate produced in the style of a game show, the channel announced Monday.


"Politics is the ultimate game and the California recall election is one of the most bizarre contests in American history," Rich Cronin, president of the channel, said in a statement.


The channel said it is lining up five candidates to take part in the Oct. 1 program. The show will chronicle their campaigns and include a "wide-ranging" debate, including buzz-in answers and bonus questions, the channel said.


Officials say 195 people have submitted papers to run to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites), whose approval ratings have fallen to record lows.

When I bought the car - the license fee was $244. Last year it was $218. The new registration is $519.

A $301.00 increase over last year. Yeah, heck it is just money - pay it. I am waiting until the last minute to see if something is done about it.

There are going to be a lot of very angry people around as these bills start arriving.

It is classic, just classic. - oh, sorry, I have to get back to work so I can hopefully make an extra $300 to pay for this (and not eat for a while).

now, are not new, they are actually old reinstated fees that DMV used for their price scale a few yrs. back.
I will never understand why the fees were cut so
drastically low in the first place, and than our government
screams their is no money.
What ever happen to middle ground, where we could still

fees. (One extreme to the other)

You guys in CA think you have it bad, I just received my property tax bill and it's more than doubled since last year (before we had a Republican gov). It's now over $3,600 :eek: Just one of the reasons I'm on a noodle soup and kool-aid diet :( I thought when I made my final mortgage payment I'd be in good shape. HAH fat chance.:mad: :mad: :( Maybe it's time to think about a recall here in the East :(

Time for you to REVOLT, and get something on the ballot..

Calif. had the same problem, and I believe it was Howard
Jarvis that got Prop 13 on the ballot and thankfully
we passed it. Saved many elderly and fixed income
residents from loosing their homes. :(
After that CA. officials tried to do anything they could
to upset prop 13, Courts held it up, and voters
have kept prop 13 safe so far, I think it would
be political suicide for politicians to mess with it
at this point, but they do try by tying bonds issues
to the property tax.
I NEVER vote for any bonds that have to do with property tax).

After 7 years plus, studies have been done, and
since most people usually do not stay in their house for more than
5 years the arguements against prop 13 does not pass gas anymore. :o

They have tried every which way to overturn it but unsuccessful to date, and as you say there is such a big turnover normally in houses, they are making up for it, that and the new building on every piece of land they can find. I can remember the day we could go for a Sunday drive in the country, unfortunately there is not much country left in Ca at least in So Ca.

Back in 2000 during the presidential election, I recall voting (which I did in the comfort of my living room thanks to Oregon's Vote-by-Mail) and seeing those annoying little "hanging chads" (I didn't even know they had a name back then) on my ballot.

If I was able to vote while drinking beer and thought to remove my chads for a national election with lots of stuff to vote on, then I think Californians can figure out how to vote for one person and not leave a hanging chad.:eek:

Catland, you're in Clackamas County, aren't you? Seven of the 36 counties on Oregon still use punch cards. The rest of use a pencil/pen to mark our ballots. And there was just item to vote on. :)

Further research shows there are just four counties now using punch cards; Washington, Clackamas, Lane and Umatilla.

Gas prices were going up OVERNIGHT........

one day they went up almost 10 cents in two days.....

now that the Arizona pipeline is fixed, holidays are over and the price of a barrel of oil is 25-26 dollars-the prices have gone down
6 cents in two weeks.......

soon we'll pay 20 cents less and thank God that the prices have gone down....but we'll forget that we are still paying 15 cents more than last year!!!!!!!!!!!

Back in the 70's women stood up to be counted and to take their place as equals.....I kinda thought

I couldn't have been more shocked to see the lurid stories about Arnold Schwarzenegger and the things several women allege he uttered or did to them. But it wasn't over the allegations, which I had read much of in a magazine before. I was most shocked at the Los Angeles Times.

Some politicos dub the Thursday before a big election "Dirty Tricks Thursday." That's the best day for an opponent to unload his bag of filth against another candidate, getting maximum headlines, while giving his stunned opponent no time to credibly investigate or respond to the charges.

It creates a Black Friday, where the candidate spends a precious business day right before the election desperately investigating the accusations, before facing a weekend in which reporters only care about further accusations that invariably spill out of the woodwork.

Dirty Tricks Thursday is not used by the media to sink a campaign.

Yet the Times managed to give every appearance of trying to do so. It's nothing short of journalistic malpractice when a paper mounts a last-minute attack that can make or break one of the most important elections in California history. The Times looked even more biased by giving two different reasons for publishing its gruesome article at the last minute.

Now, there's no time left before the election to separate fact from fiction regarding incidents that happened as long as 20 and 30 years ago.

I should disclose here that I know one of Schwarzenegger's accusers. She is a friendly acquaintance. I have no idea whether she was actually man-handled.

Is it possible that my acquaintance told friends a tall tale, after meeting Schwarzenegger, because back then it made a young woman terribly exotic if one of the hottest beefcakes in the world wouldn't keep his paws off you?

I have no idea.

Or, could she be telling the truth?

And neither does the Los Angeles Times.

If the Times were a tabloid, this would hardly matter. But the newspaper is influential at times, and claims it has high standards. In this case, the paper gave in to its bias against Schwarzenegger:

Since at least 1997, the Times has been sitting on information that Gov. Gray Davis is an "office batterer" who has attacked female members of his staff, thrown objects at subservients and launched into red-faced fits, screaming the f-word until staffers cower.

I published a lengthy article on Davis and his bizarre dual personality at the now-defunct New Times Los Angeles on Nov. 27, 1997, as well as several articles with similar information later on.

The Times was onto the story, too, and we crossed paths. My article, headlined "Closet Wacko Vs. Mega Fibber," detailed how Davis flew into a rage one day because female staffers had rearranged framed artwork on the walls of his office.

He so violently shoved his loyal, 62-year-old secretary out of a doorway that she suffered a breakdown and refused to ever work in the same room with him. She worked at home, in an arrangement with state officials, then worked in a separate area where she was promised Davis would not go. She finally transferred to another job, desperate to avoid him.

He left a message on her phone machine. Not an apology. Just a request that she resume work, with the comment, "You know how I am."

Another woman, a policy analyst, had the unhappy chore in the mid-1990s of informing Davis that a fund-raising source had dried up. When she told Davis, she recounted, Davis began screaming the f-word at the top of his lungs.

The woman stood to demand that he stop speaking that way, and, she says, Davis grabbed her by her shoulders and "shook me until my teeth rattled. I was so stunned I said, 'Good God, Gray! Stop and look at what you are doing. Think what you are doing to me!"'

After my story ran, I waited for the Times to publish its story. It never did. When I spoke to a reporter involved, he said editors at the Times were against attacking a major political figure using anonymous sources.

Just what they did last week to Schwarzenegger.

Weeks ago, Times editors sent two teams of reporters to dig dirt on Schwarzenegger, one on his admitted use of steroids as a bodybuilder, one on the old charges of groping women from Premiere Magazine.

Who did the editors assign, weeks ago, to investigate Davis' violence against women who work for him?

Nobody.

The paper's protection of Davis is proof, on its face, of gross bias. If Schwarzenegger is elected governor, it should be no surprise if Times reporters judge him far more harshly than they ever judged Davis.

Good article - thank you! Whether we approve or not, sexual friskiness, especially of the movie star variety, is a part of our culture. Sadly, sexual abuse is, also, and that doesn't always mean getting hit on. Many an excellant woman has been held back in her career for not being "sexy" or "young" or "thin" enough, while women willing to "play the game and look the part" get ahead.And not a few women profiteer off their "abuse" while many truly abused women quietly get on with their lives.
But violence in the workplace (beyond sexual harassment), verbal or physical, is not only an indication of poor adjustment (to put it mildly), it's illegal. I am amazed that such behavior could possibly get covered up.

Movie set hi-jinks and abuse of political power are two very different items.

Last night, to honor the election, we watched "Conan the Barbarian". At the end of the movie there's a voice-over from the wizard as Conan, much older, is sitting on a throne. The wizard says something to the effect of "he would have many adventures, but would eventually become king by his own hand"... and I said to my husband, "or maybe governor."

we went from over 4900 polling locations to 1700 across the state, the gal that oversees the process had something around 50 days to prepare for a job that takes months!!

This past weekend they warmed up the machine that COUNT the ballots.....but i think we may have screwed up someplace.......what's an election without controversy????;)

I have been monitoring the airwaves and haven't heard anything......yet!
