:D

I had two hours of sleep last night lol. I was up all night spending the time with my Chloe girl anxiously awaiting her first litter and massaging her tummy while in labor. At 4:12 Chloe delivered her first little baby. He didn't come out as fast as he should of so he has a little bruise on his face. After the first one though, it went very smoothly and she did a fantastic job! I am so very proud of my little girl. :)

I got the chance to take some pics and also three videos which I will upload to imagestation later on today. I got two videos of the labor and one of her in prelabor while she was making her nest. I am also going to film her again nursing the babies and will have videos of the babies each week, to show how they grow and develope.

She is a great mother and all the babies have nice big milk bands. There is a chance of merling but the majority of the babies will be agouti, and half will be curly coated velveteens. :) She is such a sweety, she does not mind one bit when I go to touch the babies. I actually "helped" in the delivery as the litter was born on Carefresh and poor things had bedding stuck to them, so I got t unstick them lol. That is the last time I will give Carefresh to an expecting mother. She did have toilet paper but decided she didn't want to use that until after the babies were all born and clean.

I will post pics in just a little while. Stay tuned.......

Here are the pictures. :) I will try to take them out a little later on after I take a much needed nap and cook lunch for myself and Dylan.

These are the twins. They shared a placenta and were delivered at the same time. I have had this happen before but this is the first time I captured it on camera. :)

And here are all of the babies in the nest. You can see that the milk bands are clearly visible.

Wow, fourteen babies! I hope you get a Merle like you want, but I didn't know that rat babies can be born with different breeds, which I think got me confused about their adoption certificate (my ratties). Anyway, I hope they grow into happy and healthy rats who will grow up in good homes. I can't wait to see more pics!

There are no breeds of rats, just types. Types are different colors, markings, ear set and fur type. ;) There is a "breed" trying to be made now, which is the Cashmere rat. These rats are dumbo self velveteens. But even that is still up in the open.

What is confusing you with your ratties, maybe I can answer some questions for you? Did she provide a pedigree for the rats? This is a list of ancesters the rats share, like the parents, great grandparents etc. It should also state the rats type, like if they were a blue berkshire rex, or a lilac agouti self.

Milk bands are the little white splotches you see in the tummies of the babies. Since baby ratties are see through, you can see their internal organs and the milk in their tum tums, which is helpful when determining whether or not the babies are recieving enough milk from the mother. If no milk band is visible then there is a chance the mom is not producing enough. For Chloe that is not the case, her babies look like they are about to explode with milk lol.

I took a few more photos so I will upload those in a bit. :)

Thanks again everyone! Chloe really appreciates all the great comments........I have been reading the thread to her. :o

So you know just how small these little guys are, here is a pic that shows one of the babies in comparison to a quarter. ;)

I did a fur count and it looks like there will be 7 velveteens and 7 standards.

Well I will most likely keep a few for future breedings, in order to establish my own line of mink based rats. But the waiting list for this litter was pretty long, so most are going to other breeders in the NorthWest, or as pets to people on my waiting list. :)

However, it is going to be very tough to figure out who I am going to keep. :p I need to keep at least one buck and one doe, and hopefully I will get lucky and have a great curly coat, but the majority of the babies will lose their curl at around 4 weeks. There is one in the litter that has great curl to his whiskers, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. :)

I don't sell to Petshops and most of the babies born in my rattery are prereserved before being born. I won't breed unless there is a demand. But I am always willing to keep any rats that I cannot place, which is the responsible thing to do, because if you are not willing to make that commitment then you shouldn't be breeding. ;)

I do plan on posting pics every day so you all can see them blossom into cute little toddlers. :p Chloe is doing great! She has tons of milk and she is a wonderful mother to these little ones. She still wants to spend time with me, which makes me love her even more. When I go to pet the babies she licks me, and starts bruxing (grinding her teeth, a sign of contentment) away. She is just such a sweety and looking at these babies, I think I will let her have one more litter before she is retired. :)

WOW I am experiencing the weirdest thing in my rattery right now! New colors maybe? A new lightening gene? Shadows?  I have never seen anything like this. My black, yes black doe now has a completely light creme stomach! Her sister who is a Russian blue, is going through some weird changes as well. She has a light stomach as well, creme and her guard hairs are sort of a mocha color with Russian Blue tips! She used to be ALL Russian blue. I have NO IDEA what is going on and needless to say I am very excited!!! I could have a NEW gene in my rattery. :D The amazing thing is that none of them appear to be molting either. I am at a complete loss. The other sister has now turned a sort of Apricot color, one that I have never seen before! She's not beige, not fawn, not lynx. ???????? I just took a ton of pics so I will post as soon as I upload them. :) I can't wait to talk to some other breeders and see what they have to say.

But for now, here are some more pics of the babies. These were taken yesterday, day 4. Today is day 5 and I should have those pics up later tonight.

Yep this is a little boy lol. :p

And here is the Russian Blue blazed boy, keep in mind this is the brother to the above mentioned girls, and he looks exactly like he should, a RB silvered berk. Nothing weird is going on with his coloring.....

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid72/p767e5527ad1c3a2ade8f2d93744c763c/fb7ef644.jpg

Another thing I have noticed is that these babies are like dwarves, they are so very tiny compared to all the other rats, they still look like they are only 6 weeks old. They are growing in proportion but are just so small.

luckies4me
08-03-2003, 02:30 PM
Well I am not going to get that excited yet lol, but we will see what my friend says. She has a lot of experience in genetics, and knows a heck of a lot more than me. Even if my RB doe was molting, there is no way she would be solid and then her guard hairs turn brown, it is just so weird.

Their fur is comming in and I can now see it, so in about two days I *should* know what colors I have, or at least assume what colors I have lol. :p

Aww they really are a rainbow of colors! I'm so glad they are all doing so well!

We used to have a TON of rats.

It started when we got Emmit and male rate who we adored. Then my sister got Helen. It was an entire accident that Helen got pregnant. We were not trying to get her pregnant but we often brough both rats out at the same time and we though Emmit just wanted a piggyback ride:o Helen's first litter was really cool because we kept them all. Me and my brother and my other sister picked one rat to be ours. Lizzy was mine. Peter had the only boy John Pierre. Hannah had Alice who did backflips. We had another rat named Bianca who was albino. Those are the only ones I can remember (we had them a long time ago).

Lizzy and Helen were the only ones to have litters after that. Lizzy lost all her babies and Helen lost two of her babies. She did have one baby that survived we thought was a boy and named him Billy. Then Billy became Billie.

You know what was really special about Billie though? When we had the litter the two babies we lost were really fighting for their lives. There was a tiny little girl rat and Billie always cuddled up to her even though her eyes were still shut. Even though this girl was the tiniest her larger brother died before her and I believe Billie might have had some affect on that poor baby.

We had one other rat I can clearly remember named Emma and she was my brother and he and my mom brought her home from the petstore where they were going to use her as snake food. She was already old and was incredibly sweet and we all loved her. The one day I was sitting on the couch and all the girl rats were with me. Emma came over and climbed into my lap. She laid her head on my leg, closed her eyes and died. I will never forget that.

I really miss having rats. I love them so much and I miss Lizzy, Alice, Bianca, John Pierre, Billie, Helen, Emmit, and Emma to this day.

Sorry didn't mean to start blabbing.

~Rachel

At what age are they able to see? Do they make noises? Do they communicate to each other?

Now! lol I had my frist eye opening baby today, my little agouti girl. She's early, but oh well. hehe

Yes they make several noises. They sometimes "talk" to you, just chattering, and they brux, which is grinding their teeth together when they are happy and content, and they also squeek. :)

I am taking pics of the little ones this morning, but I had to stop to recharge my batteries. I know for sure which one I am keeping, she is a dumbo pearl rex. Soooo cute! :D

Thanks for answering my questions. :) They are so cute...I love that one you are keeping. I also love the apricot colored ones...will they be that color as they get older?

Do baby rats like to cuddle with you? They look like they like to cling to you....how cute!! :)

I am not wasting money, it was a good buy and I am happy with the cage. I have other Superpet cages and I love them. I have always love them and I will be phasing out to all Superpet cages, except for does and younger ratties. Their easy to clean, fun to decorate etc.

I am not keeping rats in the cage, my hedgie is in there. And he's loving all the levels, being able to explore. And what's neat is that he's already trained himself to the litter box. :D

Yes the apricot colored ones stay that way until they die. ;) They are called "fawns", which is the name of the color. I too find the fawns very pretty. The grandfather to this litter is a nice fawn buck, my Meeko boy. :)

My older bucks love to cuddle, especially Meeko and Quicksilver. They are major cuddle bugs. Does can be a little more hyper. The babies do like to feel secure, but once their eyes open they are outa there! They started opening their eyes today, so they should also start nibbling on food at this time as well. Now that their eyes are open they are exploring everything. Not all the eyes are open yet, but I suspect that by tomorrow you should be able to see peepers! :D
