View Full Version : Something fun....limericks

Logan

Today on the Golden Retriever site, someone started a message thread where we would submit limericks about our Goldens. The only rule was that the first line would be: "I own a great Golden named _____". Of course you don't all have Goldens, but it is fun. Here are the ones I posted. I know, I know, I got carried away.

We own a great Golden named Honey
Sometimes she isn't so funny
A hunter is she
Even after we plea
We are relieved; so far no bunny

We own a great Golden named Honey
Her chewing has cost me some money
Shoes, plants and rugs
She gives them a tug
Then goes and naps where its sunny

We have a great Golden named Lilly
When it comes to her food she is silly
Lilly feels no guilt
About eating whats spilt
So we're off for a walk up the hilly

We have a great Golden named Lil
When her hips hurt, she swallows her pill
A sweetheart is she
She fills us with glee
And Mom gladly takes care of the bill

Hope you will all join in. I think I remember that in a limerick, the first, second and fifth lines rhyme with eachother, then the third and fourth line rhyme.

Start writing!!!!

I know a great golden named Sadie
Who unfortunately wasn't a lady
She ate two apple pies
When away from prying eyes
When discovered, her future became shady

I knew a great Golden named Puffles
Whose fur was all red-gold fine ruffles
But a tough-boy was he
He'd fix trucks with Daddy
And come home all dirty from scuffles

I knew a great golden named Rusty
Whose passion in life was the Frisbee
He'd leap without care
Straight into the air
Catch it, then run and play "catch me!"

(Sadie belongs to a friend, who was not at all happy about the pies - she actually chomped a big bite out of the middle of the third pie, when she was too full to eat the whole thing ...)

Puffles was a neighborhood dog when I was a kid

Rusty belonged to a co-worker, and came to company picnics!

Great limericks, Karen! We're on a roll now. Hey guys, it doesn't have to be about Goldens (although, you know I love them). Write about all your dogs!!

I love writing poems... Here are mine about Simba

I own a wonderful mutt named Sim
He can be a pain in the butt,Still I Love Him
He fills my heart with glee
not even charging a fee
Only for I to love him

My dog Simba owns me
he will sure tell me if he has a flee
he has alot stored in his brain
theres no need to explain
only watch as he preforms tricks for me!

I like my last one the best.

How about doing a Alliteration poem?
which is most words start with the same letter and its a funny poem heres an example:

the giggling gaggle of geese gathered on the green grassy lawn grown by gary greyfeild

The Silly Smashing of seven snowcones was done by sweet sunshine boy Simba.

I have a great Basset named Daisy.
I guess I'll admit.. yeah, she's lazy.
But when I have something to eat
She really moves those four feet
And at my feet, she begs something crazy!

I love poetry! And my, you are all good at it!

as he only thinks of it as a game
At the end he lays down and lets me pet him

Makes my heart melt with his eyes of golden brown
Boys and girls love him
Adults share that love of him.

Line One- 2 syllables
Line Two- 4 syllables
Line Three- 6 syllables
Line Four- 8 syllables
Line Five- 2 syllables

Simba
Smileing Love
Awakeing me with joy
Gentle kisses of love I recieve
My Babe

5 Sences poem:
line 1 is a color
line 2 is a taste
line 3 is a sound
line 4 is a sight
line 5 is a smell
line 6 is a feeling

Simba with golden brown and black fur
Hes So sweet he may taste like sugar
His bark is like a Pit Bull's
His looks are so brilliant
His fur smells like hes fresh from a flower bath
his coat is like golden lace and silk

I'm warning everybody I'm not good at this.

My Schnauzer's name is Daisy
My husband says she's crazy
She never comes when you call
Unless you throw her the ball
Sometimes she loves to be kissed
With Daisy....how can we resist?

I own a great poodle named Reece
His curly hair is soft as fleece
Brown eyes deep as the sea,
He doesn't even come up to my knee!
But I love him piece by piece.

Ok I know I know, a first grader can write a better one than me :)

Perry came to live with us one day
Daisy didn't know what to say
We told her look, that's your new brother

Love between brother and sister, never to part.

Oooooh! Aly, KayAnn and Jackie are into the poetry now!! Where is Pam? Rachel? K9Karen? Sandra???? Everyone else??? :D

Pam
07-17-2001, 08:08 PM
Oh Logan this is so hard. I should have named her something other than Bella! Nothing rhymes! Well here goes....

I have a great poodle named Bella,
She's getting spayed so she won't need a fella,
She doesn't always behave,
And may send me to an early grave,
But for NO money would I ever sella (sell her) Pathetic!

Pam
07-17-2001, 08:32 PM
OK while we are waiting to hear from Rachel, Bella wrote this....

I know a great cockerpoo named Hannah,
She hails from a town called Havana,
She's a spirit bold and free,
Just like I wanna be,
Prettier than the girl on TV known as Vanna!

Karen
07-17-2001, 08:53 PM
My Dad's Saint Bernard is named Bruni
When I visit she always goes loony
She'll wag and she'll wiggle
She's a big furry giggle
All wrapped up in love, she's a goony!

A graceless Great Dane was our Gracie
Whose black fur soon went grey like crazy
Her muzzle turned white
And just glowed in the night
But her smile stayed bright as a daisy!

A big black Great Dane was our Grace
Who ran so fast we'd never chase
She'd escape swift, then stop
On the neighbor's hilltop
And glance back, daring us to race!

Here is a "cat" related limerick especially for my Butter.

Hello, my new name is Butter
I never knew one like my Mother
She tries to be nice
All I do is bite
But I won't trade her in for another

Bad, bad, bad!!!!

You are all great at this! Pam and Logan, yours had me laughing! Keep them coming, everyone!

Daisy wrote one for her bud, Star.

Daisy has a friend named Star,
Her prettiest lab friend by far!
Though she lives far away
Maybe they'll meet some day
And take a fun ride in the car.

Karen
07-17-2001, 11:42 PM
Now Daisy, we know, is a Bassett
Whose cute face is her biggest asset
Her ears - long and low,
Her charms we all know
And if food's around, she'd never pass it!

Pam
07-18-2001, 07:44 AM
OK you got me started and now someone better help me shut up! :D

I know a great schnauzer named Perry,
For Jackie's hubby he makes life so merry,
Jackie has her own special pal,
Little Daisy is her gal,
Two love bugs covered in furry!

I know, it's time to quit!! :D

Ooooooh, Ooooooooh! I just wrote a poem about Daisy...It just popped into my head. Here goes:

There once was a Basset named Daisy
Rumor has it her Mom's says she's lazy!!???
But kissin's her thing
So much joy does she bring
Not to love her you'de have to be crazy!

Love, Star

I am so bad at this stuff, but I'll give it a try!

There once was a poodle named Fritz
He really likes to eat Ritz
He's extremely hyper
But we wouldn't trade him for another
He's so funny he's kind of a ditz!

There once was a schnauzer named Hans
He's so cool he thinks he's the Fonz
He thinks he's the boss
He likes to eat spaghetti sauce
If he was in jail he'd even love all the cons!

These are SO terrible.

In honor of our long gone siamese cat named Maile, born on a tiny Coast Guard island, next to the Statue of Liberty, traveled and camped in a small VW and tent trailer clear across the country, and up the coast from San Diego to Oregon. She was unique.

Maile sounds like "My Lee".

Long gone is my kitty named Maile
Oh she was so very wiley
Our Thanksgiving was shared
As the turkey breast was bared
That night in our cold dark garage
For family & friends we created a mirage
No one aware as family pictures we took
Except me & Maile & her sly secretive look.

Our biggest family funny memory, after the fact. She got most of one breast, but I cooked it real good later, so no germs. She is still missed to this day.

Even though a skill I don't possess, this was fun.

Pam that was great my husband loved it, keep them coming :) :D

We know there are three friends named Bella, Trevor and Andy
Andy is white, no doubt...and he is quite the dandy
Trevor is a big orange tabby, he patrols the house and knows his duty
He must protect Bella from all harm as she is sweet and quite the beauty

Tanya, your poems were very good! :)

Daisy says thank you to Star and Karen for the poems about her! They were wonderful! :)

tatsxxx11
07-18-2001, 12:57 PM
Everyone's poems are so wonderful! Maile sounds so sweet and special. How well I remember those Thanksgivings where turkey was enjoyed by all, especially the furkids! They always knew, and smelled, what tasty treasures awaited them. We usually made an extra smaller one just for them!

Now, I'm going to have do something devilish to Logan when she arrives. I CANNOT stop thinking in "limmericks!" So, while getting my hair cut, I came up with this creation.

A lab christened Star is my love-light
Every moment we share is a delight!
She's taught me the way
How to cherish EACH day
"Wag your tail..." "Chase the wind..." "Catch the sunglight!!!"
That's my Star!! :)

And now, a few words from someone we seldom hear from...

I'm Cody the dog you may not know
NOT MY FAULT, cause 'sis Star steals the WHOLE show!
But Mom says to say...
I'M her Dog of the Day!
#1 in her heart from the get go!!!

Star says she'll be back with more for her doggie pals.

For Star and Cody

Star and Cody are two gorgous girls,
They wouldn't trade their Mom even for pearls,
They live in Mass and romp in the snow,
I'm sure they keep those squirrels all in a row.

Jackie, you are doing great!!!! Sandra said that she has to think of one for every pet on this board. That should take a while!! Ha ha ha!!! Honey and Lilly are very pleased that you thought of a poem for them.

Have a great day, and keep those wonderful limericks coming, you guys, I mean ya'll. :p
By the way, I have started this in Cat General too...its worth a visit over, even if you aren't cat lover. Their entries are priceless!! :D

Okay, one more before bed! LOL, I like this one.

As a puppy, Daisy was a bad hound.
She's lucky we didn't send her to the pound
'Cause we hated to stoop
And find puppy poop
Inside the house on the ground!

Okay this isn't all true because I just need some things to write.

I know a great golden named Bam Bam,
He has a stuffed toy named Lamb Lamb,
He barks with a ruff,
then eats all the stuff,
and that's the last time we saw poor Lamb Lamb.

I know a great dog named Tiger,
He loves it when I "grrr",
He looks at me strange,
then barks for a change,
And then he goes "grr"

I think that's okay. Bam Bam is my friends dog and Tiger is my sweet pup!

OHHHH BOY!! This is right up my alley. I'm an English major and poetry is my FAV!! I'm actually applying for a job w/ Hallmark cards. If I'm ever in a position where I can develop my own line of cards...I'm keeping you guys and your furbabies in mind!!

Ok, forgive me, this isn't a limerick but an ode... I wrote this for a children's poetry class that I took.

ODE TO SARA THE BOXER

A blur of brindle-
Slow brain,
Fast feet,
Quicker tongue.
Slobbering happy mass
Clumsily chasing cats
Not to hurt
But to agitate.

In the house:
Expert cat courser,
Impatietn beggar,
Toy toter,
Underwear theif,
Mischief maker.
On the waxed floor:
The grace of a bulldozer.

In the backyard:
She digs,
Barks at shadows,
Yawns at winged intruders,
Buries biscuits,
Eats rosebushes, daisies, worms, and her water bowl,
Chews house, fence, boat, trampoline.
Jumps tall fences, small buildings
Only to be scolded.

In her doghouse:
Lays
Halfway in-
Halfway out,
On top of
Blankets,
Grass,
Dirt,
Her squeaky toys.

On the leash:
Sixty pounds
Pulling,
Straining,
Choking,
Dragging me behind.
She will heel
Only a second
Possibly two--
Too many sights,
Smells,
Wonders,
And cats.

Floppy ears,
Liquid eyes.
White muzzle and paws
Covered in earth.
Pink tongue
Longing for remnants
Of leftover snacks.
Stout, sinewy body,
Hard muscle mass
Tense,
Eager to bound and leap.
Short tail,
Shorter attention span.
Cold nose,
Warm heart.

I'm owned by a great dog named Maddie.
She has made my house pretty rattie.
She eats all in her path,
Puts me in a wrath,
And I completely go battie!

I'm owned by a great dog named Sasha.
She stands very still when I wash'a.
She's a beauty in solid black,
Always rolling over on her back,
So I scratch her belly and say "Aww Masha"!

I have a great dog named Lexi who owns me.
I raised her from a wee little puppy.
She's been with me for 5 years,
Thinking of life without brings tears,
I can't imagine how my life will ever be!

I hope I don't sound partial to my babies.... Sasha is such a sweetie, Maddie is just psycho but I love her so much and Lexi just has a very special place in my heart since I have had her since she was a puppy.

Gosh, I'm hooked now. All of you guys write soooo good!

Here is one for Simba...

There once was a dog named Simba.
Running and playing cuz he was 'limba'. (limber)
Cute as a button,
As loveable as 'nuttin',
I think he needs a brother named 'Timba'!

And for Fritz....

There was this little cutie named Fritz.
Does he like to eat crackers named Ritz?
Maybe he should try some,
And even give Hans one,
Then leave a carpet full of bits! :)
