This is Mary, she is currently at the Lanark Animal Welfare Society, Animal Shelter in Smiths Falls.

http://www.falls.igs.net/~animals/dogs/mary.jpg

"Mary is an energetic five year old, spayed hound cross. She has a glossy, short brown and white coat that is virtually maintenance free. Mary has a very sunny, happy go lucky disposition and enjoys the company of other furry companions, as well as people. Could she be the little darling you've been searching for? "

I really want her but my parents won't let me get another dog. So if I can't get them to let me have her and anyone is looking for a beautiful hound and live near Smiths Falls Ontario this is your girl.

What a beautiful girl Mary is. I know why you want her so badly. I hope she'll find a wonderful home.

By the way, I Love Hounds, did you see the dog of the day today??? The beagle/Boston Terrier mix. He is adorable!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Yes I saw him, what a cutie http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif My sister has a brindle boston terrier and you can see both the beagle and boston terrier in him. He is going to be a beautiful dog. A very smart one to boston terriers are sooo smart, my sisters little three month old pup already knows half the tricks Hannah does. What a great mixture!!!

I keep falling in love with the dogs at the shelter too. Its sooo hard when I spend time with them every day and sometimes they are there for months! We have a standard poodle, black lab, german shepherd, and rottweiler right now who have stolen my heart. Today was my last day working there because my summer school schedule is so hectic, I won't be able to hold down a job and still get good grades. I will still be volunteering several times a week though. I can't imagine my life if I wasn't able to go there on a regular basis.

Mary is so cute. Hopefully she will be adopted soon.

Good on you, Ilovehounds, for getting the word around about Mary needing a home. She looks like a lovely dog & I can see why she would win your heart. Here's hoping that she is adopted into a really good home.

Oh, Mary is so beautiful. I love hounds too. Beagles, foxhounds, all of them! I would take her in a heart beat if I could. The little bio.'s are so painful to read. No living creature should have to plead for a home. It's just heartbreaking. But, being the beautiful girl that she is, with that sweet, lovely name, I'm hopeful she'll be in her forever home very, very soon. Thanks for sharing her with us.

She looks like all she wants is just to be loved. And I'm sure she has so much love to give back! What a cutie! I hope you'll be able to get her somehow! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Yes, I do! And you won't believe it, but I only live 45 minutes from Smiths Falls! I can't convince my husband to get anything other than a male puppy. I don't understand why he wouldn't adopt a dog that is desperate for a home. I'm so frustrated!

Tanya - tell him with a female you're less likely to have dominance problems, because you've already got a male. Then bring him with you to see those dark eyes melt his heart ...

Tanya, Even I was hesitant about taking in a fully grown dog, feeling that I wouldn't be able to bond like I could with a puppy, but I and many people on this board have found out that not only is that not the case, but it is often these "second hand" dogs that are the most appreciative and loyal companions. They seem to know they have been rescued and do not take anything you do for granted like some other dogs do (and I'll save her the embarrassment of mentioning her name) who were raised up from a pup. I also for the longest time had the erroneous idea that the dogs in the shelters where "rejects" with major behavior problems. I guess it is only been since I've had on-line access that I have discovered the wonderful array of animals that are available. If you have your heart set on a particular breed or type of dog, the search is an exciting part of the process. I guess my suggestion would be to talk to your husband about what his specific concerns are about getting a rescue or shelter dog. Once you know what his frame of reference is, you might be able to provide information to alleviate those concerns. Let's be honest, one can get a dog that can be a real challenge, but that dog is just as likely to be one you pick out as a puppy as it is a shelter dog. I don't fault anyone who wants to raise a puppy, because I have been there. I just want people to know that the rewards of doing it the other way are unbelievable and the concerns are often unfounded.

I totally agree with you. I would love to adopt a dog the same age as Hans. My husband is worried that they may have been abused and that they may have health problems. He won't even consider a mixed breed, it has to be a purebred. I'm taking him out tonight for a couple of beer. I find this strategy usually works fairly well for getting my own way!!! I'll let you guys know what happens!

Hehehe, good idea, get him good and drunk. I don't know about the area you live in but do you live by a no-kill shelter? This could be the answer because no-kill shelters are selective in the dogs they take in. They have to be. They take in the most adoptable and healthy dogs. Shelters that kill can be a different story because they have to take in every animal that comes. There are some sicknesses that spread around a lot of them but not every dog is sick. Harley had kennel cough when I adopted him but that was easy to cure. We actually just waited it out for a few days. I think something to do is take him to the shelter and have him spend time with a mixed breed. Maybe he will change his mind about them. Do you know why he only wants a pure bred? Good luck in convincing him. I'm sure you guys will find a dog that you both will love and cherish forever.

Oooohhh that would be soo nice if you could talk him in to letting you adopt her, then I could come visit lol and I would be happy to dog sit if you ever needed a sitter http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

There are currently 8 hounds at the shelter, this is the only male and he is still pretty young. I never met the dog but he looks like a sweety.
http://www.falls.igs.net/~animals/dogs/roger.jpg

"Roger is a mostly black and white male hound about 2-3 yrs old. He was brought to the shelter the middle of January after being picked up on the side of a road. Roger is very nervous around people but is starting to come around, and is now confident enough to spend the day outside with the other dogs. Roger needs a very special home where someone is willing to take time to spend with him as we believe he has not been treated well in the past."

Sorry the pics not very clear. This one is better then the other in the other pic he was crouching in the corner.

Do you live in Ottawa ??

Tanya, Here's another idea - print out a picture of one of the hounds that you like the best, put it in a stand-up frame and set it at your place on the table, then while your on the floor feeding Hans, your husband will get to look at the other dog...... yeah, i was raised on guilt! Unless of course the beer works...which is a much better method or saturday road trip....

Tanya, there are many pure bred rescue organizations for which you can search on the web. They should be able to give you some information on the individual dogs as I think most rescue organizations use foster homes. It may take a little time and effort, but I am sure you could find a dog that both you and your husband would be happy with. What kind of breed is he interested in?

Tanya, drag hubby to the computer to show him the "Dog of the Day" whenever it is a rescue like today's dear Bernie. After reading about a few of these wonderful animals, he should be a little less apprehensive about 'adopting'.

Last dog I will post http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I know its not a hound but every dog deserves a chance so I will post it to.

http://www.falls.igs.net/~animals/dogs/hershey.jpg

"Hershey is a big and boisterous lab retreiver cross who, because of his size would be best suited to a home with older children. He has long silky black fur and deep alluring eyes. Hershey is a very active and intelligent 13 month old boy who enjoys to play and already understands many commands and tricks. He also has the amazing quality of being a rather silent boy. Hershey so enjoys the company of others and eagerly awaits his new home. Could it be yours?"

He is a young male so I thought your husband might like it better http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Ilovehounds,

Yes, I live in Ottawa. Well, I'll see what I can do about convincing my husband. He's interested in getting another schnauzer.
