You could type German Shepherd (GS). But the whole name of the breed is German Shepherd Dog, so people say GSD..:)

Their official breed name is German Shepherd Dog, so as not to confuse them with human beings who herd sheep (shephers) and happen to be from Germany!

My guess is because they are Shepherds (herding group). And maybe GSD sounds better than GS. lol I dunno :p
