Mary I don't think that turtles are illegal here, maybe one or two specific varities. But when I worked at Petco we sold box turtles and Tropical Kingdom or is is Tropics of Tucson ( I always get those two confused) sells different kinds of turtles and tortises.

I have family in Arizona. I believe it is legal to own turtles but they can't be wild.. I think it is illegal to snatch one from the wild and make it a pet. Out of all honesty, though. I think if I seen a cute little turtle truckng across the road where he could get hurt, I would have a tough time not taking him as a pet.

it was several years ago, someone told me this when I wanted to get a turtle... a pet shop or something... I will have to find out about it, it bugs me now, I want to know.:D

No, desert tortoise's are not illegal as long as they're registered with the AZ Game and Fish Dept. (which Helmet is). Also you're only allowed to own two at the same time. It is illegal to snatch them from their desert environment. We got Helmet from legitimate sources. If not, I sure wouldn't be plastering his picture all over!:D

Helmet was the size of a quarter when we first got him. And look at him now! We've had him about 4 years.

Also, if you're still interested in a tortoise their's a rescue agency here that takes in tortoise's that people no longer want (and now they can't survive in their natural environment)injured ones, etc. If you come to visit next month it could be something you could look into.

You can't sell them, so the cost is nothing. They're care is VERY easy. All you need is a yard they can't dig out of, lots of left over fruits & veggies to feed, and some water. They hibernate all winter so they need some type of tunnel/house they can crawl into to go to sleep. Helmet is still kept inside in a huge acquarium with a reptile light on him. He's still too small to let roam the yard since there's ways he could crawl out of the backyard. We do put him out and let him roam while under supervision. OK, confession here: we have him SO spoiled with the indoors that when it gets too hot out he wants in his acquarium! And they call him a desert tortoise!:D

I know that with aquatic turtles you are only allowed to purchase them when they reach a certain size so in order to sell them when they are young and cute pet stores will give you the turtle for "free" when you buy the $150 turtle kit.
