The sparkle in his eyes is gone, the bounce in his step is gone, but his little tail is still wagging when I talk to him. We had a very hard night. It was probably even harder because I was expecting the WORST. KayAnn, thanks for telling everyone about Reece. Last night when I was sitting in that waiting room, I really wanted to talk to you guys and tell you what was happening. I'm sorry I scared you and ran out like that. I was really freaked out.

What happened was I was on my computer and Reece is always either in his bed by my computer or in my lap. Last night though he kept walking away from me and acting weird. He'd go into my closet and under my bed. I opened the front door to take him out and as SOON as he stepped out, a ton of diarrhea came out. He didn't have time to even squat. I'm serious, it looked like an explosion. I carried him down the stairs and he walked around going to the bathroom everywhere. It was pure liquid with some chunks. (sorry if I'm being gross). I came in and was scared. I told myself he was fine while I raced around getting dressed. Into the emergency room we went. This was around 11:30pm. They kept asking me to describe his diarrhea then we heard some squirting and looked down and Reece had given them a great sample of it.

They basically told me to not feed him for 12-18 hours then put him on a high fiber diet with special food and cooked hamburger and rice. I felt better because they checked him out and he seemed fine in everything they checked. They even complimented him a lot saying he was a lab in a poodle's body because of his easy-going nature. We drove home and as soon as we stepped out of the car, he exploded again. He never has time to make it to the grass and its just all over the place. I wrapped him up in towels and layed down with him on the kitchen floor. Around 3am, I closed my eyes to go to sleep and heard him go to the bathroom again. I took him outside and he went more and also threw up. They told me to watch for vomitting so I got scared again and rushed him back. They told me to get him some Immodium so I went and got that and gave it to him. He went to the bathroom a few more times when we got home. I just stayed up all night holding him in towels and taking him out about every 30-40 minutes. If he was sleeping, he could go longer sometimes.

I just took him out again and he spit up 3 times so I called my regular vet and we've got an appointment there today. I can hear his stomach gargling and gurgling constantly. Even Shiloh can hear it from across the room. I am guessing something in the trash he ate was poisonous to him. They felt his stomach and said it was soft and normal and didn't even feel gaseous. His gums were pink, his temperature fine (although I was convinced he had a fever), and all other things they check in emergency situations were fine. I am hoping this will pass soon because I feel so exhausted. I haven't been able to go to sleep yet. I'm diabetic and the stress is making my blood sugar really high. I am going to call my mom later and see if she can come stay with me this weekend instead of me going to see her.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. The messages and emails bring tears to my eyes and help me out so much. You guys have already helped me through a lot and I've only been here a couple months. Words can't express my gratitude. Think of Reece and his gargling tummy today and I know he'll get better with so many people wishing him well.

Bug and i are with you! we just got through a situation where for a week she kept vomiting. I cleaned everything to find out what was making her sick. Its amazing how loud those little bellies rumble! and they can't talk to you and all you can do is feel helpless and tired.
Oh you have our prayers and best wishes for certain! wish we were closer in distance - i'd take a turn with Reece in a second and let you get some sleep.
Reece will be okay though! bug has a knack for telling things like that....

Bless your heart, Alyson. We all get so much support and love from you. I just wish I was closer so I could help you.

Prayers are coming up for your special little Reese. I hope he will be better soon. Tell him he's in good company as Lilly is suffering from somewhat the same thing and had lots of smelly surprises for me this morning when I awakened. I have no idea if she tried to wake me during the night, but she left me three nice piles all over the dining room and living room. She is tucked away in her corner right now, almost ashamed, and I hate it. She's getting boiled hamburger and rice only today. But I know the source of LIlly's problems...I let myself run out of my regular dog food, and had to give them something else instead. It has really affected her. But the regular food is on its way.
Sorry to digress. Please keep us posted and give Reece extra hugs for us.

You and I both know what adverse effects stress can have on your blood sugar. Please give precious little Reece kisses and hugs from all of his surrogate moms and dads here. My heart goes out to the poor little guy and his rumbling belly. We love you both very much. When you can and feel up to it, let us know how you both are doing. Both of you try and get some rest. I don't wanna jump the gun but I think he's feeling better. I just took him outside and it was the first time nothing has come out. Even if I took him out at 5 minute intervals last night, he always had something coming out. I've been carrying him around so I can keep track of his stomach and every possible thing going on. His rumblings have quieted down. I have to put my head on his stomach to hear them now. I also put him on the floor and he walked over to Shiloh, tail a waggin. I'm boiling hamburger and rice right now and we'll see how that goes. He's so tiny, I don't want him any more dehydrated. I hope its all downhill from here. That was so scary. From now on, the garbage stays under the sink.

Alyson ~

Great News that Reese is feeling better http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif!

If he doesn't want to drink plain water, try some cracked or crushed ice in his bowl. If that won't work, try a very light dusting of sugar on top of the ice to grab his attention.

Hang in there, both of you. And give Shiloh a *skritch* too.

That's great news Alyson! I was getting concerned about him getting dehydrated. That's a lot of fluid for a wee one to lose. Hope he keeps down the hamburger and rice. And small sips of water or a little ice. Don't let him take in too much at once!! And now you try and get a little rest. Paws crossed that all goes well, and hugs and kisses to Reece (brave boy) and to Shiloh!

Reece has held down the boiled hamburger and rice for about 2 hours. He also drank a little water. The first thing I had worried about last night was a blockage, then it was dehydration (I didn't know so much could come out of a little 7 lb guy), then I thought what he ate was so bad it was going to kill him. Luckily I think the worst is over. It was sad watching him throwing up and going to the bathroom at the same time. Dry heaving and straining too. I felt helpless. My sister came over and offered to bring me KFC for lunch. I screamed and said if I never see another chicken bone in my life it will be too soon. My mom is getting out of work in an hour then will be on her way here http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Sounds like little Reece is on the road to comfy cozy well. Thats is absolutely wonderful! and if he gets tired of beef and rice bug recommends cottage cheese and rice... she also thinks Pepcid AC's are good for those sensitive bellies (and since its a pill that when broken up dissolves partially in water or milk its easy to give them!)
I am so glad he's on the mend! I hope both of you have a great friday night - cup of tea for you, saucer of broth for him, movie and a snuggle on the sofa!

Oh Aly!!

So sorry to jump in so late on this topic, but I can totally sympathize with how scared you must have been!! My cat, Marius, had a similar reaction (vomiting and diarrhea) to a shot, and it was so terrifying! Especially because of they're size...being so small, I was afraid Marius would become dehydrated...and I had to wonder where all this stuff was coming from... certainly... there can't be any more in that tiny body, but it just kept coming...then turned to dry heeves which turned to blood later! It was so scary and I felt so helpless. All I could do was comfort him as he had his bouts. Sounds exactly like the same kind of situation you had. So glad you caught it quickly and that Reece seems to be doing better! That's great news. I hope everything is going ok, and let us know how he's doing!!
*hugs*

Hi everyone!!! We have a quiet tummy and no more explosions since this morning! I'm sooo happy and enhausted at the same time. I have called the vet about 6 more times today with progress reports and they told me I don't have to come back in. I really think they are sick of me by now, hehe. One of the last times I called, I had only gotten the word 'hi' out and the girl said "Is this Alyson?". Oh well, I was too worried and I kept thinking there was more I should do. Thank you everyone for caring about my little boy. I was getting awful images last night that each of my animals were going to be slowly taken away from me. I had to take Shiloh to the emergency place with us during the 3am trip because I kept getting visions of her stuck in a fire. Then I forgot the directions because my mind was overflowing with too much and I thought I was lost and freaked out. On the way home, I looked to my right and saw the vet clinic I had just been at! I accidently drove in a circle. The highways there are a maze. I don't think I'm the best person to be caught in an emergency with. Instead of leaving a trail of bread crumbs, Reece left a trail of diarrhea crumbs. Heh, just kidding but it seems like he did. There are spots all over the sidewalk and everywhere outside and also all over the vet office and outside the vet's. They were nice and cleaned it up for me. I guess they knew I had enough at home I was cleaning up. He's a bit stinky and grundgy but I'm going to wait until tomorrow or the next day to give him a bath. He's resting comfortably right now, no more tossing and turning and whining. Thanks everyone http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Poor little Reece!!! I am so sorry he had to go through that! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif But REALLY glad he is a little better. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif A similar thing happened to Poco when we went on a trip to the beach, the vets think she ingested some shampoo. We would go out on the beach for a few hours, thinking that she would probably be OK for 2 hours but when we got back there were about 10 spots of ....HCl and bodily juices from the south end of a northbound Poco AND the south end of a southbound Poco. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif
That went on for a looooong time, b/c we couldn't get to a good vet at the beach, and she wasn't eating anything just drinking. but a lot of ????? came out of her too so i know EXACTLY how traumitized and relieved you must feel. Do take care of your diabetes too!

Hi everyone.. sorry I didn't get to write this sooner. I think all the stress got to me and I've been worrying sooo much that I haven't been feeling well. I am doing much better with my mom here and she is being good about taking care of Reece too. Reece is holding down foods and still has diarrhea but it is controllable. He hasn't gone today yet though so I'm still really worried. I am thinking about a vet trip tomorrow. I had him out playing with a rat terrier and a cairn terrier today and he wore them both out. It was a lot of fun because we were in an off leash park. Garbo, the cairn terrier, belongs to my mom's friend and she's staying in a hotel with her family so I told her I'd take care of Garbo. Reece really enjoys dog company so much. My sister was over today and said Harley's name and Reece's ears perked up and he jumped up and started looking around http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif I hope he will go to the bathroom tonight. I think I'll go take him out right now and see if we can get something out. Thanks everyone for your concern and I will keep you updated http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Happy mother's day to all you dog moms and human moms (and dads too!).

aly
05-14-2001, 12:05 AM
I am having trouble sleeping tonight because I took so many naps today. I was just sitting here at my computer looking around the rescue sites I always look at. I read a story about a little yorkie that broke my heart. I looked over and saw Reece curled up sleeping with Garbo and next thing I knew I was emailing the rescue with the yorkie! I might have a new baby soon. As long as there's space in my home and heart, I'm never going to be able to resist these poor babies that need to be rescued. I'm such a sucker. I requested more information to be sure that the yorkie would fit in with us though. I'd be devastated if for some reason she didn't get along with Reece or Shiloh. It did say that she likes cats and dogs though.

Reece did end up going to the bathroom tonight but it was not very much. Same thing last night, very little poop. Maybe because I have had him on this special diet? I'm still concerned. If he had a blockage, he wouldn't be eating though would he?

Aly, I would be encouraged with Reece's energy and eating and the diahea abating. It certainly doesn't sound like he is in pain, nor does he have a complete blockage. I guess there is a remote possibility that he could have a piece of a chicken bone wedged somewhere, but as time goes on it seems more as if this was some kind of gastric upset. You know how people are always advised to change the brand of dog food by mixing in a little of the new with the old and gradually change over so as to avoid problems. I guess that speaks to how sensitive some dogs can be. The fried chicken and maybe even a bacterial agent could easily have caused this problem. At this point, I'd be real encouraged. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be alert for any signs, but I'm starting to worry less.

aly
05-14-2001, 12:50 PM
Rachel, that is what my mom was telling me this morning. I got really worried again because he spit up a little but when I took him outside, he had some solid poop. It was a weird color (light tan) but my mom said his stomach is probably still settling down. I'm going to continue to watch him like a hawk but I do feel a little better about the situation. He's still got his energy and appetite.

I think for little Reece's belly is still settling down. As long as his poops are firming up, becoming less frequent and he is eating and drinking well, I think you can breathe a little easier. But I can certainly understand your state of "high alert!" It's such a frightening thing. But remember, you have to take care of yourself as well. The vet is only a phone call away; if you think you need to call, do call. Keeping you both in my thoughts. And remember a hug and kiss for the Reece pup.
