Yellow Lab mix attacks!

Yellow lab mix attacked a 6 yr. old lil boy while he was sitting on his grand parents floor reading books. The family plans on putting the animal down. The dog is about1 or 2 yrs old. Most of the child's damage was to the head area. The kid was not messing with the dog. Ok now I wonder if people will give yellow labs the bad rep that pit bulls have? by the way this happend today ( May 9th,2001) in Florida. I dont have all the details but when i get the news paper tommorow I will get you guys updated. I was typing this while the report was on the news and I was trying to type all I heard....

No, I don't think people should say that Labs have a bad rep. It's not the breed, it's the dog. What breed was it mixed with?
Labs are my first love, but I like Pit Bulls, too!!! So, it's not the breed that made the dog attack, it's the dog!!!!! Labradors are very sweet and friendly dogs, and so are Pit Bulls!!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

This goes to show that any breed can be aggressive if that specific dog has bad genetics and/or was not properly socialized & trained. It's not just the Rotties, Dobermans, Shepherds, and Pit Bulls that bite - any dog can.

What makes me upset is that if this dog was a Pit Bull or a Rottweiler this story would be all over the news. But because it was one of the breeds with a reputation for being good, sweet & loving, I would never have heard of the story if I had not read your message.

I don't think we can call any breed of dog bad. Also, this dog was not a "yellow lab." As you said, this was a lab mix. But really, that is irrelevant. It's all been said here before. Breeding and a multitude of enviormental and socialization issues factor into the reasons why a dog may or may not become aggressive. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif All dogs need to be approached initially with caution, and always with respect.
