I was just wondering, what kind of vacuum all of you prefer? I have a hoover upright, wind tunnel. my mom has a bissel bagless, that Iam borrowing, its ok. I thought I would like a bagless but I think I prefer the old fashioned type after all, unless there are better bagless vacuums? this is on the cheap side so maybe that's why.
I like the kind with a good assortment of attachements too. what kind do you use?

That is such a timely question! There is a vacuum cleaner sale this week and we're going this afternoon to have a look.

We have an old Electrolux (I bought it when I left home, eeek 15 years ago) but I've been having really bad allergies, so we're going to look at a Dyson with the HEPA filter doo-dah. I'm getting a referral from my doctor tonight to see an allergist, but I have a funny feeling it's either dust mites or cat dander as I'm really sneezy and itchy at home, but better outside the house, so we might need a new one.

I have a very old canister style Filter Queen. It's my grandma's old one, and she bought it in the 50s or 60s from a door-to-door vacuum salesperson. I got a powerhead for it a couple years ago (she never bought one because when she got it she only had linoleum) but it works really well. If I had the money I would update it with a brand new Filter Queen, but they are very expensive vacuums!

We have a Hoover Windtunnel, bagless. It works good for the most part. The belt broke and it didn't come with an extra! Ah, got a new one (belt) today! :) :D

Definitely Panasonic. We've gone through terrible headaches with every other company, and they are either ugly, or way to heavy, or don't clean good, or worst, die in less than a year! Panasonic is the only vacuum that lasts us for years and years with no problem. Its excellent, and after going through nightmares with all other vacuums, I consider Panasonic the best vacuum out there. :) Its just perfect, in looks, in performance, in weight, and in its features. :)

I have a Dyson - and it's wonderful. It's quite light to push and it WORKS! Great on pet hair too!!

I haven't heard of some of these types, or brands, but then I have not looked at vacuums for a long time! I didn't know panasonic made one...

We've had it about 1 1/2 and so far it's stood up to the hair test! It seems to work great and no problems (knock on wood:p).
Here's a great thread we had on this last year Mary

Dyson rock.

I love our Dyson, if we buy another, we'll buy a newer Dyson cleaner.

When I moved here I hoovered our new house with a borrowed hoover. Then I brought the Dyson and rehoovered the next day (just to try it out, also before we had cats), the amount of dust it picked up from the carpet made me sick.

They pick up cat hair great !!

I also have a Kenmore from Sears, but mine uses bags. It works great on all the dog hair, and it's fairly quiet.

I had a Dirt Devil last time, but after a year, it only *sucked* when you pulled it backwards! Imagine having to walk backwards around the whole house.

The one we have looks like this. I'm not sure if its the same model because they had several that looked like this but had different features, but it looks exactly like ours. :)

We've had it for 3 years now and its still like brand new. Our last Panasonic lasted us 9 or 10 years, and it never died. My mom just decided she wanted a new one. :p We got a Hoover in between and it died in less than a year. Then we got a Dirt Devil and is was so bad we retunred it almost immediately, so back to Panasonic! ;)

We also have a Panasonic. I would go for the cheapest  but my husband did all the research -- Consumer's Report, etc. and insisted on the Panasonic. SUPPOSEDLY, the suction is such that it will hold a bowling ball....(I haven't validated that....)

It does do a nice job -- especially compared to the cheapy I had before and has lasted 6 or 7 years and is still going strong!

thanks for the links!

I don't remember who, but that thread about ,"how do you clean your kitty condos" the hint about the brush, boy that sure worked great! now I don't have to vauum as much, and actually the brush picks up more fur than the vacuum :)
I want to get a vac with a good dust/allergen filter and good attachements too. so thanks again for the advice and links.

I've got an Oreck. I had a Dirt Devil that was my Dad's but figured it was time for a new one. I had always gotten my vacuum cleaners at tag sales.

The Oreck is lightweight and works well, but there's one drawback. It doesn't suck up the stuff in corners or sides. That's probably why they try and sell you the portable vacuum with it.

Speaking of the big, mean red machine, here's a picture of Maya Linn as I'm vacuuming my living room. All she was interested in was me retrieving her ball from under the coffee table!!

I have a canisiter Electrolux. It rocks my world. It was $1,400.00 but I got it on sale for $1000. It's amazing how much it picks up. And because it's a canister I can use it on the curtains, haul it out to the garage for the cars, it has an attachment for bare floors and upholstry. It does use bags, but they deliver them right to my door. My mom bought one when I was born and still has it. That was 32 years ago. That's the only reason I spent that kind of money but with 5 cats and 3 dogs it's a life saver.

05-31-2003, 06:34 AM
We have a central hoover! Meaning: the motor is in the garage; it is linked with all rooms of the house by pipes in the walls. You just need to take the hose with you, look for an "contact-box" in the wall, and the hoovering starts! Almost noice-less!
Of course, you can only install this in a new-built house!

It is SUPER!!!

I used to sell sweepers at Sears.
Please keep in mind that I don't work there any more and I have NO stake in the company sales or anything.

Panasonic and Kenmore are both good sweepers, actually when I worked there Panasonic made Kenmore sweepers.
Whatever kind you get make sure to read the fine print. If you buy a Hoover, it might say "19.5 amps per ....." but that doesn't mean it is the best. The highest you can go is 12 amps. period
My mom has had an Electrolux as long as I can remember so it is at least 27 years old.
She also has a Hoover Windtunnel Upright and a Kenmore canister. Compliments of when I worked at Sears! ;)
I have a bagless. It is the Kenmore Destiny a replica of the Fantom.
I like it alot but the next one I buy probably will have bags.
Any questions I can try to answer best to my ability.

Staci, did you deal with the Wertheim brand at all ? We looked at Dysons but weren't that impressed by performance for the cost (will have to take my own sample of cat fur next time :)). We went to a specialist vacuum shop and he promoted the Wertheim, but we got so confused we just wandered out in a daze!

Sorry Nicole, I am not familiar with that brand at all. :( Nor the Dyson Must be overseas equivalent?
:(

BUT I do agree that that is a great way to see if your sweeper is going to pick up. I once had customers bring in a baggie of cat litter (don't know what kind it was my pre-catdays but very very fine) to see which one picked it up the best. I think they ended up going with the Kenmore.
So I actually bought a bag of el cheapo cat litter to use as a demo. And I think people brought in cat hair and dog hair also.
I would take a small carpet remnant and put it where it is a high traffic cat area make sure it gets good and cat hair covered then take that into the store.

Right now I have a Hoover that uses a hepa filter bag and I love it. It also has attachments so I can get into small corners. It really seems to pick up all the cat hair and litter very well. I've had it for about 2 years now. Before that I had a Eureka and it didn't have much power so it didn't pick up things very well.

I know, I know! I want a Kenmore based on the replies but they aren't sold here! I just looked at their web site and I'm drooling over the fridges and ovens too ... :)

That's a great idea about the carpet remnant, OR I'll just take our quilt cover after the little furbags have been lying on the bed all day

I have an Oreck too! (Mine is grey though.) I got it around 9/10 years ago, and recently, after ending a three year affair with a Dyson, I have gone back to my Oreck first love! :D It is the best thing ever for picking up dog and cat hair - (I first got it because of Penny, my RB German Shepherd, boy, did she lose hair!) - and I got that little canister thingy free at the time I got the main machine, I don`t use the canister so much now though, I tend to use the Dyson crevice thingy for the corners and suchlike.
As for the pets, Bob has always ran away from the Oreck when it`s running, and Ebby, well, she is ok unless it comes within around 4`of wherever she is, any closer and she does a runner!
Here is Bob curled up near it when he was a pup.

And it is on the left in this picture taken around 10 days ago, I think he may be a little too big to curl up by it now!

I have the ROOMBA! Yes the robotic vacuum cleaner. I love it. My dad sent it to us for Christmas. The cats are not afraid of it at all and it can do under the sofas and the king sized bed without a problem. Although I do use a canister to get along the walls and in the smaller places but it has saved so much time and effort. I just clear the space of cat toys...turn it on and go do something else like read or watch TV...hehehe

Me too! Do those things suck up the dog hair or what?!?!? I'm weird, I love to empty the caninster thingy after every room and see all the "stuff" that used to sit in the bag of my old regular one! The first time I used it I had to empy it 4-5 times in each room!! YUCK!!!! It seems to really suck up the hair and the dirt better than anything I've ever used and I've had 2 $1200.00 ones!

Getting a Central Vac System installed was a good investment and I don't know how I managed without it! No more impurities being blown back into the air, and I don't have to dust as often. I don't have allergies, but it is certainly a bonus for those that do. Now, if only they could come up with a TRULY dust-free clumping litter, I would be ecstatic! :D Before the central vac I always had an Electrolux, because that is what I grew up with and my Mom swore by that brand.
