I'm curious about how you all decided what to name your dogs. We always strive for something unique when we get a new animal in our household.
Honey - so named because of her color as well as the fact that her mom was "Johnston's Brown Sugar". Couldn't name her Ginger because my sister had already named her beagle that one.
Lilly - because one of my daughter's favorite characaters in a book when she was young was "Lilly" from Lilly and the Purple Plastic Purse.
Mimi - don't know, but we liked it!
Phoebe and Evelyn - our two female hamsters.

Wolfgang-my first GSD from German bloodlines who reminded me of a wolf.
Avalanche-a Great Pyrenees (French mountain dog that is all white and huge) when she jumped up on you it was like an avalanche (French word) of snow.
Killian-shelter dog, came with that name (I think his previous owners were Irish, he LOVED corned beef).
Shiloh-shelter dog,came with that name.

All of my doggies are now in doggie heaven but I have had four.....all poodles. Peaches and Pumpkin were toy apricot poodles and got their name because of their coloring. Ashley was a silver miniature poodle and he name was also picked because of her silvery coat. Whitney, our black standard, was named after Whitney Houston. She was our "singer" and would put her head up and howl for her doggie biscuits. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I am not very original when it comes to names.

Current dogs:

Sheba our female Akita is named in memory of our first GSD.
Pepper our Norwich is named because
her color as a pup looked like red/wheaton with pepper.
Rocky our male Akita is named after my Uncle.

I couldn't name my dogs until I saw them and then said all the names I liked until I found one that fit each of them. Bailey (now deceased) - got the name from Bailey Quarters on WKRP in Cincinnati (TV show) and Tizzie (now deceased) - there was a restaurant in our town called Tizzie's which was the restaurant owner's nickname. Hannah fit her and she came from a town named Havanah, so she was Hannah from Havanah. Tucker was the name of a kid I knew as a child, and always felt it was a good dog's name.

Paddy came with the name when he was two years old. He was named because when he gets excited he pads his front feet.

My dogs are named after hockey players: Barahona ( Ralph Barahona) and Blue ( John Blue) course Blue is a dapple, which looks like a blue merle, so that helped as well. I just thought Barahona was such an interesting sounding name! I also had a Yogi named after a hockey player ( Yaroslav Svekovsky nicknamed Yogi) but had to re-home him with a wonderful family when I left my first husband and moved into a city apartment ( Yogi was a husky mix).

My rats are named by myself and my daughter: Patty, Bubbles, Strawberry and Banana( twins), Spot ( had a twin named Stripe we sold), Butterscotch ( color),and Drew after Drew Carey.

I have always heard if you take in a dog and are unsure of its past it may be wise to re-name it so if they used his name harshly in the past it wont have negative associations for him. So when someone surrendered a dachshund to me at the vet I re-named him Jordan, a brand of hot dog.

The arrival of a new dog in our family used to be an opportunity for my dad to indulge his wackier creative self. He'd simply try to pick the oddest names he could, from which we could derive "normal" nicknames. Here are a couple examples:

A poodle was named Maya Angelique ("Angie")
A pom was named Rustacia Dustina Loueen ("Rusti", or sometimes, "Rusti-Dusti")
Another pom that, sadly, only lived to be about two months old (just suddenly died--a mystery to this day) was named Gustavo something-or-other ("Gus")

My dad has since calmed down, or perhaps my mother had had enough. Our Yorkie Sugar was named so because "she looks so sweet!" (ugh), and we named the Corgi Katie simply because it seemed to fit.

Hi, Doxiedoxie,
My two rescued GSDs, Killian and Shiloh were abused, but we still kept their names. We never had a problem with calling them by their original names. Maybe because we call them with love in our voices!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif They know that they are loved and have a forever home. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I'm loving this!! Hannah from Havanah takes the cake!! I've mentioned on another section about a cat I rescued once. Someone had dropped her off at a seafood market in Holden Beach, NC. I stopped on my way home from vacation to stock up on shrimp and there she was. She had been riding on the shrimp boat all week with the guys who worked there, thus her name "Shrimp Boat". She's gone now, but the name was always a winner. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Keep those names coming and thanks for participating!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Oooh, oooh, I forgot to say that my two also have middle names. Hannah is Hannah Noel Johnson because we were saying "Hannah, No" so much I decided it should be part of her name. And Tucker is Tucker Love Johnson (you know, like Jennifer Love Hewitt). You all can figure how he got that one. Then there are the nick names. My other two had many more nick names than these, but Hannah is Hannah Banana or Banana Dog (she loves bananas too). When she is in one of her oppositional, stuborn moods I will call her "Snarla". http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/mad.gif Poor Tucker really doesn't have a nickname per se. My husband will call him Tucker Wucker but I HATE that. Makes him sound like a Teletubbie. It's not really a nickname but I like to tell him "You the Doggers". He likes that. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Hey, I like this topic!
I've had Kelsey (@Rainbow Bridge), a mostly black Lab(with some GSD). Kelsey means 'of the water' or something close to that. I wanted a water related name for a Lab.
I now have Bailey, a chocolate Lab. Bailey, for Bailey's Irish Cream. She's a very dark chocolate color, I should have named her Oreo http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
I also have Heidi, a black Lab, large for a female. (To me Heidi sounds like it should be a petite yellow Lab.) I had asked the breeder for a yellow Lab female, I had a really unique name all picked out. There was only 1 yellow, but 5 black females. The breeder kept the yellow one for herself, so I got a black one. But I had no idea what to name a black one. I ran a whole bunch of names past the whole family, and no one could agree to one of them. Finally, in desperation, I said,'How about Heidi?' 'Yes, we like that' everone said. I said 'Her name is Heidi, and we're not changing it!' (...now had I known her registered name would be "The Dance", I would have named her Dancer, it would have suited her better http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif)

My first two Golden Retrievers had Russian names, Natasha and Irina, because I read somewhere that the first Goldens came from Russian circus dogs plus Irish Setters, although I found out later that it was not true. However,it was nice to call them Grand Duchess Natasha and Grand Duchess Irina. They are both waiting for me at Rainbow Bridge.
The Golden I have now is called Carina, which means "little darling" in Italian. That was the name that came to my mind when I first saw her, she was six months old at the time. She is almost eight by now and the name could not fit her better. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Carl's full name is Carl Ellis Love Sponge.

Let's start with Carl. That's after the 'Good Dog, Carl' books by Alexandra Day!

'Love Sponge', well, he sure is one. Just sponges up love! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

'Ellis', that's the complicated part. Okay, The first letters of Love Sponge are "L" and "S" If you say those letters together you get "Ellis". So, that's my boy Carl Ellis Love Sponge!

Well, you guys already know the story of Little Orphan Annie (Annie or Nanners for short), my blue merle Aussie. Maxwell (Max or Bubba for short) just looked like a Max, and Sweetpea (@ the Bridge now) was a rescue dog, who was pure evil. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Thought it would be funny to name her something that was the complete opposite of her personality.

Well, I'm not nearly as creative. Even before I got Cody I decided on the name.. Short and sweet, and I thought masculine. Then I read in a women's mag. that Kathy Lee Grifford named her son Cody and I thought that it really WAS a dogs name plus he really looked like a Cody. Am considering another dog and have chosen lots of names, and according to my vet, most of the names are already very popular. So, when the time comes, new name will definitely be "Logan" which I LOVE plus a tribute to my new friend who I adore.

While visiting our area shelters, making ourselves available to the dog looking for us, we came across a 10 month old Chow-Chow/Labrador mix. He was the portrait of mellow amidst the noise and chaos of the shelter. I had always gotten a chuckle from that old Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue" about a deadbeat dad who names his son Sue before leaving him behind. You can read the lyrics here. (http://members.home.net/steak-daddy/sue/odetosue.htm)

Sue's a pretty big dog, but he's nothing like the Sue of the song, other than the part about wressling in the mud and the blood and the beer. He will roll around with his buddy Gus for hours on end. The only other name we sometimes call him is "Sue-Baru". Partly because the Baru part sounds like a bark and partly because when it's time to hit the yard before bed I say, "Subaru Outback", and he gets the picture...

I am flattered that anyone would think to name their next dog, "Logan". I told Karen that there actually is a chocolate lab in my neighborhood with that name. Whenever they are walking with him (off leash), I'll hear them calling "Logan, Logan" and I want to say, "what?". I finally learned what to expect, so I don't try and answer all the time.

Too funny Logan!! "Logan, Stay!' "Logan, Come"! "Logan, NO"! Good thing you started ignoring them!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Lerrin is great! I know people that named their dogs after where they live; Devon, Dresher, Denver (cities outside Phila). Don't think my next will be "Glenside" (where I live). Not by a long shot! Always liked Milo and Simon but they're real popular now. Nope, it's Logan for me!!! PS..Great name, says mom!

I named my aussie Golden Graham, because he has alot of spun gold in his hair, and because of his golden personality. I like the name Graham, and he really looks like a Graham. When I adopted him from the shelter his original name was Rufus...it really lowered his I.Q. in my opinion so I did something about that RIGHT AWAY!

My pug's name is Cassie (reg. AKC name is Cassendra Kay). I kept her name because she was 7 years old when I got her and she knew the name so well. I would call her Piglet if I could name her anything else.

Years ago we had a litter of labs - 5 yellow and 5 black. We kept two of the pups naming the black lab Thunder and the yellow lab Lightning. A few years later we got another yellow lab and named her Sunshine. Naturally when we got our kitten we had to name her Hurricane.
We couldn't think of a "weather" name when we got a new black lab pup last year, so we named him Duke. It just seemed to fit.

Growing up, we had "Freckles," a St. Bernard who had freckles a-plenty, on her nose and even on her puppy tummy!
The next dog in the family was the Great Dane mix Grace, so named because she had none! She would trip running across flat ground! The only unfortunate part of Gracie's name was that the teenager "Tracy" across the street didn't appeciate it much! That, and now any use of the word grace takes on a different meaning to me than to most. "Amazing Grace" anyone? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

My dad named my dog Zorro because it was the only name we could all agree on. He is a black shepherd so hence the name. HOWEVER, I usually end up giving extra pet names and I call him from a distance "Zorri Babori Zorri Baboo" - boy does he get excited when he hears that! (yeah- I am abit silly :-) )

I'm really enjoying the book I'm currently reading, "I Capture the Castle", by Dodie Smith (see my post under Dog General/What's Your Favorite Dog Book?). As a result, I might suggest "Heloise" to my husband as a name for our future dog.

My husband likes the name Sikan, from the excellent film "My Life as a Dog". Anyone here ever see it?

Dukiemom,

Another weather related name....about a year ago at the vet. there was this lady with a lil kitten in a carrier. She had weather names for all her animals too, she decided to name this lil kitty Twister. I thought that was a great name for a cat or a super active dog.

Hi! I just remembered another funny name I heard...a co-worker at the vet I worked at when I was in high school had a little brother with a long hair doxy. He named him Link. We used to have a Cattle Dog Mix named Lacey Louise Upson. Lacey was her name when we got her and it got lengthened when she turned out to be a mischevious rascal. She's gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Our next dog was a shelter dog who was very shy and got the name Shiloh because of that. Full name: Shiloh Esther Upson (Esther was my grandmother's name and it just fits Shi), she's still around and 11.5 years old. Then we had a Cattle Dog named Smokey because he was a smokey-blue, a Cattle Dog named Justin because his parents were named for the boots, Smokey and Justin have moved to other homes. I had a JRT named k'Treva Askeveron Upson (gone to the Rainbow Bridge) after books by Mercedes Lackey. My next JRT will have the name Ellysium, call name Lys (lease), just because I like the sound of that name. I try all names outloud because if I ever take a dog into the obedience ring I want something that will not start the watchers laughing (like BoBo which was D'Artagnon's original name, but he's one of the cats. The other cat is named Monocle because she has a gray spot around her eye that looked like a monocle). I think names have power, so if you want a calmer dog, I don't recommend giving it an active name.

I can empathise with trying out names that aren't too embarrassing to call out in public! Guide Dogs names each litter by consecutive letters of the alphabet. When you've got the second litter of the year with the letter U to name and there are seven pups some pretty weird named dogs arrived at training. Try calling,"Ursula!" to a black 100lb GSD in a crowded park. "Ulna" (!) was another one sure to get weird looks and "Yuko" and "Prudence" turned heads too.

Cornwall's trademark image is of the stacks of the old tin mines, sounds awful but they are really beautiful structures. We named a litter of pups after the old local mines. Each mine is named Wheal----. So we had Prosper, Prudence, Peter, Jane, Honey and, you want an embarassing name to call out in public try this one, Kitty.

When we got our Weimaraner, my husband wanted to name her something Native American. The first name he came up with was Suix however my mother's name is Sue, could you imagine me telling her what we named our dog? So he asked his friends and they came up with Bailey, Jack, Daniels, Whiskey, see a theme here? So we nixed those. Since he wanted a Native American name I asked what type of things are in the Dakotas. He liked Dakota, so that is her name....Dakota. It is good!

My greyhound was called Tara at the Humane Society, and I didn't like that. I was going to call her Lady b/c she was so Ladylike, but that was too plain. My sister thought I should call her Bambi, b/c she looks like a deer.
I decided on Shaianne, spelled with an S b/c my name starts with an S.
My sister has a lab mix name Scooby Doo, b/c my 3 year old nephew said "I want a black boy puppy names Scooby Doo!"
Just goes to show Scooby is a Classic!!!
My aunt has had 2 lab mixes one was named Corey Bear, the new one is Katie.

I have a small Baby Names book i use to pick names for my animals...

"Nika": means victory (she was found with her 7 siblings in the woods when they were 3 days old)

"Hoshi": means star in Japanese. she is all white with blue eyes that *sparkle*

"Billie": means strong-willed. (she was dumbed along with her 5 puppies in a small carrier. i had never seen such a mess. Billie was so skinny but her puppies were in excellent health!)

and then we have "Gypsy"...When i took her mom in to foster, she was first named Jackie (she had one white front paw so it was after Micheal Jackson) and then when we adopted her my sister-in-law had a fit about the dog having *her* name. so, she became Gypsy just because i liked the name and she is a terrier mix and looks like a gypsy!! has a bad-hair-day everyday.
that is how we came up with the dogs' names.
the cats have all just been named and all start with "S". we have a "Summer"(which i thought would be a *calm* name...boy was i wrong!), "Sillie"(as we were bringing her home my husband said "you're a silly looking kitten...) and "Samir", which Samir was picked out of the baby book: means partner.

My rats are Tai (I loved that name) and Tres, which is the spanish word for "3" (she is my third rat and i got her at a pet store on 3rd st.) My first rat was "Tara"...spell it backwards...a rat!

this was fun!

When i foster, i name the foster *kids* after family members...ha! the only one that has ever gotten bent out of shape was my sister-in-law!!!!

Daisy was named by my mother who said the name seemed to fit our droopy little basset puppy just fine. It also rhymes with lazy with totally fits her!! She has about 10 nicknames last time we counted, but her most common ones are Daze, Lil' Roo (because if you ever heard a basset bark, it sounds exactly like a low "Rooo roooo!") and Bubboo Gizzoos (puppy kisses in baby talk! She loves giving kisses!)

Our 5 are:
Sox: named after the White Sox
Tigger: because I love Tigger and he actually bounces like Tigger!
Jasmine: It took us 3 days, but my husband just said...Jasmine...and it stuck
Shawna: I teach at Shawnee Middle School and my husband said he wasn't going to have a dog named Shawnee so we decided on Shawna and my assistant principal told me to add the middle initial "E" so she is Shawna E.
George: because my husband said the only name for him was George...if there ever was a perfect name for a dog George is it for him.
By the way....this is a great idea for a topic!

My cousin has 2 great Danes, and they're brothers. One is very handsome and smart and has a great personality and he is named Brain. And he is black except for a few white places. His brother sort of got all the left-over genes and he acts a little like Hitler sometimes. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif But his eyes sag a little, and he is mostly white with black speckles all over, and he is not quite as intelligent as Brain. It's gotta be Pinky. That's what my daughter calls our dogs, Jeffrey and Bandit. Bandit is very smart, a little stubborn. Jeffrey is a big goof ball. She calls them Pinky and the Brain from the cartoon.

I didn't name my dogs, I kept the names the previous owners had given them. We were going to change Jeffrey's name when we got him, but he was such a little terror getting into everything. We were constantly saying JEFFREEEEEEY, STOP. JEFFREEEEEEY, NO. So we said forget, it stays. Bandit came from such a loving family who are good friends and we didn't think once of changing his name.

Good to know there is another dog lover so close by! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I have 3 mini schnauzers.
Healthy - the puppy we bought before her died of parvovirus. So when we bought her we want her to be healthy and happy. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Cookie - I like the Cookie Monster. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Donna - Looks like a pretty girly name. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif

My solid black mixed breed terrier was named Raisin. When I first brought her home at 6 weeks a friend said she looked like a raisin and the name just seemed to fit. My husband said the next male dog we get he is going to name him Riley because around our house a dog lives a life of Riley.
