I am so happy. My mom said that she could take Sager *my female gerbil with the ear infection* to the vet to get a baytril shot :D. we are going this week ;).

oh and one bad thing. Sage is most likely pregnant. Could the baytil shot hurt her babies. Her and Jade just bred.
... I better put an add in the paper pritty soon for free gerbil babies to go in pairs.

I don't know if it would  I think that's a question for a vet ;)

I'll tell my friends that you are going to have gerbil babies, some might want some :D

Are you sure that they mated?

tikeyas_mom
04-24-2003, 09:56 PM
yes I am sure..

it says my pm is full yet I have no messages in it.

wolfsoul

What were they doing when they were mating? It's very unusual for gerbils to mate at this hour, they usually wait until very late in the night or very early in the morning
When they mate, they chase eachother around, the male will mount the female, then get off and *check* himself, and the female will also *check* herself. It's followed with more mounting and checking several times..

tikeyas_mom
04-24-2003, 10:05 PM
they did it yesterday at around 1:30 in the afternoon. they did it for like 10 min.. chasing each other and the male *Jade* mounted the female*sage* and would then get off and lick and groom himself, so would Sage. Jade chased Sage around the cage befor each mount. then he would groom her.

I am pritty sure they were mating. I never saw the whole thing though I cam into my room when my mom picked me up from school at lunch and they migyht have been breeding for longer then that.

oooh, I see, well, I'll ask my friends if they want gerbils lol

gerb porn lol :p

Maybe Ashley could take one? hmmm...I know she wants some more little rodents...since she lives in Glenrosa, and she could probably just walk over, her mom might say yes..
I'll get her to reply here ;)

hee hee, you wish ;). I didnt have troubles finding homes for my hammies so the gerbils will be going o good homes. I promis :D.. And also I wanted to add that I give them away for free. I dont liek to make profit for finding my rodent babies good homes :D.

I also interview each person with a series of common sence questions, on cageing and bedding ect..

So its all good ;)

I don't think it's a good idea to give ANY pet away for free....my opinion.

...And would you please stop posting photos of animals sexual organs and/or them mating? Really...send that in a pm....

I agree. Its gross and not something that there should even be pictures of. Yeah its natural and everything, but its a *private* thing and not a *film* thing. Its nasty. I hate those kinds of pics and the descriptive narration. lol

Tikeya's Mom, weren't you going to try and keep Jade and Sage separate until you'd sexed them definitely? If they were mating for two hours why didn't you separate them then?

Uh yeah, I thought you didn't WANT them to breed.... If they were going at it for 2 hours, you could have at least attempted to separate them.

I agree that you shouldnt post pics like that anymore... it seems like you post them a lot....

why didnt you seperate them if you didnt want babies? and why did you house them together if you didnt know what sex they were yet?

and i really dont think you should sell them for free. if they are free, people could just get them "because they are free," and not take good care of them. or they could become snake food!

tikeyas_mom
04-25-2003, 10:48 AM
you know what I am not even going to start ok. that is crap how you all ar assuming me of likeing to watch animals breed, I post this stuff because some ppl dont know how to sex hamster ect.. is that soo evil?

tikeyas_mom
04-25-2003, 10:53 AM
The reson I never seperated them is because I had No devieder made yet. I have no extra cage. Shoot me. i am sorry if you all think I am a bad owner. But would you rather me bring Jade back to the pet store so he can inbreed and be kept in pine bedding ext?? I dont think that is the best fro him.

and why did you house them together if you didnt know what sex they were yet?

because I thought they werte males, the store said they were both male.

and i really dont think you should sell them for free. if they are free, people could just get them "because they are free," and not take good care of them. or they could become snake food!

well if you think I should sell them, then how much should they be?

Uh yeah, I thought you didn't WANT them to breed.... If they were going at it for 2 hours, you could have at least attempted to separate them.

Ya I didnt have a seperate cage and I didnt have a devider. I might have exsadurated a bit when I said they were going at it for 2 hours. it was more liek 10 min lol.

People only talk with concern ok? No one is posting *just* because they have something against you. You think people do, but its not true. They are only trying to help, and well, even 10 minutes is a long time. I would have seperated them if I were you, unless I didn't see them till the last moment of course.

I think you should just stop posting nasty pics, describing nasty things and stop getting angry. This icon  can be rude in some ways but you should definitly not get offended just because someone posts it. Don't take things like a silly icon against you.

Although I strongly am against the whole thing of your gerbils breeding and you not separating them, what's done is done. Ask your vet for what a reasonable price would be and make sure to question those interested.

The reson I never seperated them is because I had No devieder made yet

Why wasn't it made yet? We mentionned it to you weeks (or at least days) ago. If you know you have a female and a male in the same cage, you should have gone out and made the divider right away or at least expected them to breed.

Keep us updated on the situation.

04-25-2003, 06:05 PM
Tikeyas_mom never said that she knew they were breeding, maybe she just thought it was odd and looked it up and realized after what it was? She never even said she was the one who saw them, maybe her brother did?

I don't think pics like that are discusting, I think they are completely natural. When it's people in a picture like that, then yeah, that's discusting, but it's not like, omg two naked gerbils..:p

I'm afraid to say that the gerbils aren't going to be easy to give away, let alone sell. Ashley (Chibi_star) has gone through the havoc of having a litter of gerbils. She was desperate to find homes for them and she was giving them away for free. Finally, after no one wanted them, she kept two herself, gave one to me, and her cousin took three. Now her cousin also has a litter and has been trying to find them homes for months, and she is also giving them away for free. No one wants them :( It's really sad..

The original post about the male/female gerbil thing was on 04-21-2003. This was posted on 04-25-2003. That's 4 days.......I think that's plenty of time to come up with some sort of divider, run to the store for another cage......SOMETHING. Obviously it was not important enough.

you know what I am not even going to start ok. that is crap how you all ar assuming me of likeing to watch animals breed, I post this stuff because some ppl dont know how to sex hamster ect.. is that soo evil?

Um, YOU are the one that doesn't know how to sex hamsters. And those photos you just posted were not "how to sex hamsters" it was of hamsters having sex. I don't think anyone needs a photo of that to know what you're talking about....let alone 3 photos...

Tikeyas_mom never said that she knew they were breeding, maybe she just thought it was odd and looked it up and realized after what it was?

Anyone with half a brain that sees 2 animals "mounting" eachother knows what they are doing. From the photos she posted (she says that's what it looked like) I think it's pretty obvious. And nobody just "looks up" for 2 hours...(or 10 minutes as the story has changed now...)

i am sorry if you all think I am a bad owner.

I'm glad you're sorry, because that's exactly what I think.

tikeyas_mom
04-25-2003, 07:18 PM
None of my animals have died yet? Why am I a bad owner? I love all my pets and I am a great owner compared to anyone. I am not offended by your opinion though it does hurt.
But I dont care what you say because I know the truth.

wolfsoul
04-25-2003, 07:20 PM
And those photos you just posted were not "how to sex hamsters" it was of hamsters having sex.

Those were gerbils, and she was talking about the thread she made a long time ago with the hamsters.

And nobody just "looks up" for 2 hours...(or 10 minutes as the story has changed now...)

That's not what I meant, and besides, my other suggestion is still open.

tikeyas_mom
04-25-2003, 07:24 PM
I said 2 hours but I was just exadurating (sp?) it was like ten min, and I never just stood there and watched them breed. I went and ate and then came on pet talk and crap. I went into my room to feed my bird and hamsters and they were still doing it, so i assumed how long it had been. and you all think that I never tryed to find a devider? Well I did, i phoned my dads friend and asked if he could make me one. He had come over to take messurments and crap. He just had to get my mom to buy the tite woven chicken wire, and frame. My mom couldent afford it till next week. So there was nothing I could do. I could have placed Jade or Sage in a plastic icecream tub but that would be crule, I think. I did what I could. and i am a GOOD owner. I love my pets and they love me.

TM,

Make sure you have another tank and the male out BEFORE she has the pups. If not they WILL mate straight away afterwards and you will have even more gerbils on your hands.

I have one 5 week old pup with his parents, mum gave birth to 2 babies on Tuesday, this is because I didn't get Dad out in time (she was a rescue who came pregnant the first time). Dad was neutered 3 weeks ago so they can live together and no more babies.

I do have homes, people for all the babies, but I will be keeping all of them, that is if both new babies make it (in the first litter there was 2 but one died).

I would be concerned that you have a sick female who still needs medical treatment who is now pregnant, it is not going to help her. When the pups are born and weaned put a male with dad and leave a female with her.

tikeyas_mom
04-25-2003, 08:22 PM
I dont have an extra tank or cage. I cant house my hamsters together because they are syrians. I might have to give one of my gerbils away, I guess :(.

tikeyas_mom
04-25-2003, 08:24 PM
I could always put Spanky *my budgie* in the cage with Cheeko and Spring, btu he HATES Spring, I have no idea what to do.

Thanks for helping me you are the only person who has givin advise to me.

Don't get so defensive Tikeya's Mom, we're not attacking you, just your methods.
And it seems, like Primabella said, that what's done is done now, and you just have to concentrate on on ensuring a safe and healthy pregnancy, birth, and litter.
But also...one other thing disturbs me about your explanation. You said that it would have been cruel to put one gerbil into an ice-cream container...and while I agree...didn't you consider any other options, like just picking up one gerbil for five minutes, letting them 'cool down', then putting it back and seeing whether they continued or not? I just think it might have been wise to cease the actual act. Your intervention didn't have to be permanent.
Oh, and to get back to the original point of this topic, have you taken Sage to the vet yet? What did he say?

primabella
04-25-2003, 08:53 PM
and I know this might not have anything to do with anything but can you please stop saying "...and crap" it's just getting annoying.

have you taken Sage to the vet yet? What did he say?

CathyBogart
04-25-2003, 09:12 PM
On giving them away for free....Many people consider this a great way to get free snake food. I would never do it, but I could BS myself into looking like a great owner to someone.

Lay off about the pictures. Maybe they were inappropriate for this forum, but I honestly think you guys are overreacting. Shall I post a picture of my snake eating and see what reaction I get?

Yes, I do think it was a really bad idea to get two gerbils without having a "backup plan", but that's done now and there's nothing to be done about it. You WILL need to separate them, because I can't think of a more miserable life than having litter after litter your entire life.

Will the pet store take the babies back when they're old enough? At work we give people a small amount of store credit for bringing us healthy, socialized animals. Then again, if they get all of their gerbils from the same source the babies could have problems from inbreeding if your pair is related.

Does anyone know the answer to the original question? I'm going to go ask my rat forum, since I'm sure I'll get a straight answer from them rather than a bunch of ranting about something that it's too late to change.

thank for relizing that this is done with. It took long enough geeze..

any way I will stop saying "CRAP" if you stop rolling your eyes at me prime. ;)

and about taking my gerbil babies to the pet store. HELL NO!! I would never bring them to that hell hole. that pet store sux they dont know how to sex, they use pine bedding, they house species that are solitary, they dont vet check their animals and they leave dead ones in cages with live ones, they use water bowls and not bottles they dont change them EVERY day.

it is rediculas. I rather sell or give them away my self, then EVER give them to a smelly shelter of pet store. JMHO!

wolfsoul
04-25-2003, 10:05 PM
I agree, Tikeyas_mom. I hope Petcetera goes out of business. They are a terrible store.. The puppies are kept in a tiny pen, the rats are kept in tiny spaces fed with gerbil/hamster food, pine bedding, and they don't even split up the sexes. Every time I walk in there the water bowl is filled to the rim with bedding. :( I cringe when I see them drink it. There are always litters of gerbils there. The hamsters are always housed together. The animals are sick, they have crusties in their eyes, and diahrrea in the their cages :( I now refrain from going there as I hate to see the animals live in such cruel condition. I used to be able to stand it, but the more ambitious I get about having my own pets one day, the more hurtful it becomes that I can't save these ones right now. :(

tikeyas_mom
04-25-2003, 10:10 PM
I agree, I would NEVER let my babies goto a pet store, I feel sorry for the ones that are there. I felt sorry for Sage thats why I bought her *I was told they ONLY get in males at the time * ... I got Jade because I had been doing ALOT of research and in EVERY book and website it said that GERBILS are social animals and live longer lives ect when they ahev a cage mate. So I got Jade for Sage as a cage mate. You think I am happy it turned out liek this? My mom had to stop me from stressing about the pups because I was freaking out.

Jade is male and Sage is female.

Sage JUST bred like 2 days ago she wont show for around 16 days. :)

Why would I seperate them now? They wont breed now that she is pregnant and Jade will help out with the nest building and stuff. They wouldent like being housed alone. And like I have said 10000 times befor I dont have a devider or a seperate cage. I know that is bad. but what can ya do?

10 gallon tanks dont come cheep here. they are around 80$ and up for even a used one with no lid. I cannot get another tank. Prima I wasnt being mad at you for getting my gerbs mixed up, its all good. and ya How does a divider work? I have never seen ne around here..

I made one for my snakes by getting a piece of plexiglass cut at the hardware store and epoxying it into my tank. Total cost was less then $20.

Call your vet and ask about the pregnancy thing.

Separate them ASAP! If she gives birth he will impregnate her again immediately.

wolfsoul
04-26-2003, 09:07 PM
You could use Icarus's cage until you get a divider :) I'll want it back in atleast a copule days though ;) If you take it, you'll probably get fed up with it, it has two large holes on both sides (because it connects to two other cages on each side). I have something that will cover up one side, but not the other, so you'll have to push the cage up to a wall or something and stick like a book in between them so the gerb can't get out..

tikeyas_mom
04-26-2003, 09:14 PM
What is epoxying? and how much does plexiglass coast?

Thanks for letting my use your cage if needed jordan, but she wont be having pups for about a month.

CathyBogart

Epoxying is...gluing it with epoxy glue. Plexiglass is really inexpensive, I think it was around $2 per foot^2.

tikeyas_mom
04-26-2003, 10:39 PM

Are you positive she is pregant? I know they mated but that doesn't automatically mean it took.

It must be worth putting a divider in asap, in case you are wrong.

yes I know. I am not sure if she is pregnant but I am just going on by what I seen.

I am trying to think of a way to divide them. it isnt that easy. I have a 10gallon tank and dividing it would make each side tiny. so I am still thinking of ways to do this.

Could you buy a second cage ?

Are cages very expensive to buy ? (I've never owned a small pet so I have no idea)

I think it was WolfChan (Sorry if I got the name wrong) who posted a thread about getting a cage for $12 from a garage sale. Maybe this is something you could do, look in local papers, charity shops, garage sales. You might be lucky.

I'm the one who got the cage :) There won't be any more garage sales until next weekend, but the gerbils won't be born for a couple weeks so I'm sure she has time ;)

I have checked garage sales last weekend and there was no pet stuff just toys and crap.

1 habbitrail cage coats around 30$ each. and it is HELL to put together. I looked at thrif shops but my friend bought the last hamster cage for me and it is currently occupied.

I dont know what to do, I think I might have tog ive one of my gerbils away to the spca along with thge pups if I cannot find a cage asap.

I might keep one of the pups that is the same sex as the parent. but I dont know what gerbil to keep Sage or Jade. I love them both so much. :(.

Could you possibly make a cage, out of a rubbermaid tub? But with a wire roof? Or something? I wouldn't take them to the Spca..
you still have more than two weeks to get a cage. I'm going garage saling next weekend, I'll keep a lookout for you, or you could come with me and I'll look with you :) But I don't know how early you would like to wake up to go, lol, all the good stuff is there early :p

If you could get another cage, than you could split up Jade and Sage, and when the babies are born, you could keep a male one with Jade and a female one with Sage. I'll help you sex them, I'm not so great, lol, but I can lend a hand. ;)

Also, my dad got the Fink a plastic tank at Liquidation World for only 15 dollars. I'm not sure how big it is, but it's fairly big. Big enough for the rat, so big enough for the gerb ;)

yes I know I have around a month still. maybe i'll get lucky and find a cheep one. I cant keep it in a tub because Tikeya would easily get at it. I am not allowed to have 4 gerbils either. my mom said no more pets or eles she'll give all of mine away. :(...

I have to wait till my mom gets payed by ICBC befor she can pay me allowence, till then it is hopeless. and ICBC are big buts and dont like to pay ppl, so It could be a wile. if you could look for a cage for me I would be truly greatful. better yet a 10 gallon *with lid or not* ... so ya. if you find one, you could buy it for me then I would pay you when I came to pick it up. or when My mom gets payed.

oops, when I said my dad went and bought a tub, I meant tank lol. It was a clear plastic tank, or maybe it was glass? Actually yes, it was glass now that I think of it lol. So I guess it was probably a fish tank?

My mom says she doesn't want to buy you a tank cuz she doesn't know you or if you will pay back :( I said you would, but uggh she's persistant..But I'll look for one, I may not reach you in time though, the sales might be over by the time I'm home...but they will be open again on Sunday and the cage will probably still be there?
