This is sad indeed. Whatever your opinion might be regarding this war, these WWII veterans gave the ultimate sacrifice in order that the French, and millions of other Europeans might be free. Do you feel this to be an acceptable avenue for anti war protest?? It made me sick.

As sad or even sadder, in a recent French public opinion poll, 1/3 or those polled said they were strongly opposed to the war. Shockingly, another 1/3 hoped that Saddam with defeat the coalition. TO WHAT END?? What never ceases to confound and amaze me, is learning how those who so vehemently oppose the war because of the "killing of innocent lives" would support, encourage and cheer on this slaughtering, torturing, egomanical scum!

Meanwhile, in Pakistan, pumped up anti war protestors, bull horns in hand, rallied the energized crowd to heed the call to "jihad" against the "evil, baby killing Americans." Anti war...or Anti American? Get a grip and get real and SAY WHAT YOU REALLY THINK! Of course in order to organize and carry out their "jihad," they may need to take a little time out from the testing of those nuclear missles aimed at India. It really is "Alice through the looking glass."

BRITISH WAR CEMETERY DEFACED (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/2907701.stm)

Ok, can someone tell me why the above links works when pasted in any other PT forum, EXCEPT "The Dog House????" Grrrrrrrr. I suspect a conspiracy!!!;)

Article pasted below...........

Guess you "got through" Soledad. Anyway, this was the BBC article. The one desecreation claiming the cemetery was "contaminating" French soil was perhaps the worst. What IS this world coming to?

French plea as cemetery defaced...As reported by the BBC

Etaples contains 11,000 war graves
French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has pleaded for trans-Atlantic tolerance after graffiti was daubed on a British war cemetery in northern France.
Slogans reading "Death to Yankees" and "Rosbeefs (Brits) go home" were painted on the central memorial in Etaples, near the Channel port of Boulogne in northern France.

The slogans also called for UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George W Bush to be sent to the international criminal court in The Hague.

"Saddam Hussein will win and spill your blood", one slogan read.

Another claimed the graves were "contaminating" French soil.

Our disagreement with the British and American governments (on Iraq) can in no way justify any assault on the memory of men who sacrificed themselves for our country

Jack Lang
Former French minister
The graffiti appeared on 26 March - six days after the start of the war in Iraq, which France had fought to prevent.

Mr Raffarin, without making reference to the incident, pleaded on Tuesday for anti-American feeling to be restrained, calling displays of such sentiment "unacceptable".

"It is indispensable to be vigilant against all displays of anti-Americanism, which would be unacceptable," spokesman Jean-Francois Cope quoted Mr Raffarin as telling parliamentary leaders at a meeting on Tuesday.

The government should also be on guard for any signs of racism, anti-Semitism or xenophobia in the frequent protests against the war, Mr Cope quoted him as saying.

A judicial enquiry has been opened into the Etaples attack, which was condemned by senior French politicians.

Condemnation

"This violation of a burial place - scandalous in itself - is an attack on the memory of the sacrifice made by the British and American soldiers who contributed to the liberation of our soil," said the local member of parliament, former Socialist arts minister Jack Lang.

"Our disagreement with the British and American governments (on Iraq) can in no way justify any assault on the memory of men who sacrificed themselves for our country."

Mr Raffarin's warning was the latest in a series of comments apparently aimed at healing the deep rift with the US and UK which opened up over the Iraq crisis.

Mr Raffarin has already said that France is not an enemy of the United States, while the Foreign Ministry has issued a statement saying Paris hoped US-led forces would win the war in Iraq.

FRENCH OPINION
34% - support US-led forces
25% - support Iraq
31% - support neither side
Source: Le Monde/TF1 poll
As the government attempts to mend fences with Washington, public opinion appears to remain firmly against the war.

And in a poll published by Le Monde newspaper and TF1 television station on Monday, 25% of those questioned said they supported Iraq in the war. Only 34% of the 946 people questioned said they were "on the side" of the US-led forces.

Just over 30% said they supported neither side.

As public feelings continue to run high, the government is also worried that the frequent protests against the war could become a forum for anti-Semitism.

Figures released last week showed a big rise in racist and anti-Semitic activity since the 11 September attacks on the US.

We are pretty hacked off and I am pleased to say the French authorities are too

Tim Reeves
Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Two French Jewish people were attacked at a recent anti-war protest in Paris.

Mr Raffarin's government "will not tolerate any racist, anti-Semitic or xenophobic acts," Mr Cope quoted him as saying.

The defaced Etaples cemetery is one of the biggest in northern France. Around 11,000 fallen British soldiers are buried there. It lies near the site of several wartime hospitals.

"We are pretty hacked off and I am pleased to say the French authorities are too," said Tim Reeves, of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

That's horrible. From the picture, it doesn't look like they were making fun of WWII veterans though. Just desecrating their graves to make a point about Iraq. Which is wrong and disgusting, but not as bad as what I thought it would look like. I thought they were putting signs up about the people who died in WWII.

With these kind of things, there's always a few people who do it. It's sad that they have made the French look so bad.:(

Richard you are so right. While working on genealogy, I have been to many cemeteries and many of them have been destroyed. Like I said before, I don't understand the minds of these people.

you can always backtrack when you make an immature, senseless comment about the defacing OF ANY GRAVE..

OOPS, that's terrible!!!!!!!!!

i thought........

some people will wait for a long time to show their true colors...

nope, not gonna do that...deep breath and......

when i get to hell i am gonna save a spot for all the people i do not like and make them sit next to me....

actually why mess up my eternity, let the sanctimonious souls fly to heaven, let god figure it out..

if i'm stupid and evil the planet has found the level far below that..

RICHARD, I like how you respond to my comments, but pretend as though you are not by quoting someone who has nothing to do with your rant.

I said that it was wrong, but at least they weren't saying anything about the vets because that would just be horrid.

I then found out it DID say something against the vets and expressed my sorrow.

Where is the inconsistency?

Sandra, I could not open the web site, but
thank you for taking the time to cut and past
for us.

I remember reading in the paper about
the rise of racist and anti-semitic activity after 0911th.
IF I recall a couple of synagogues were set on fire too.

Very disgusting and sad about the cemetery being defaced.
I also recall that demonstrators also defamed a replica of
the Statue of Liberty.
Just strengthens my beliefs why I am no longer
buying French products.
Goodbye Lancome and Loreal!!!
Not to mention I will not be spending my money
on visiting France again.

JMHO since it's my choice!

Um....I read it the first time.

Your point wasn't so brilliant that it needed to be repeated.

In fact, it was apparent to anyone with basic reading comprehension that I was surprised the damage was more drastic than I had envisioned. Didn't realise having an image of something in my mind was criminal.

How soon they forget who liberated the French in world war 2, how the people in Paris were cheering our G.I.s and Brits when they entered the city. How very sad, I'm sure the families over here who have their men buried over there are very upset.

Kys, I have been to France a couple of times, never again and if it says made in France believe me I will not buy it. I hope this spreads around the U.S.

I have a good friend who is going to Europe later in the year and told her sister that she would NOT go to France under any circumstances. I don't buy much that is made in France anyway, but I have been a bit more aware.

You know, it's one thing to speak against the Americans, but it's quite another to destroy the final resting place of those who gave their lives liberating France.

just the thought that you slither on the face of the planet
is bad enough for me.

i have relatives buried on in europe and in the islands of the pacific.
you don't even have the class to apologize for engaging your
disrespectful mouth before making a statement like that- no, not an apology for me but an apology to the other families who left their brothers fathers uncle, cousins on the shores of some far off land, so you can spew your venom on this board, freedom of speech? naw freedom to show what intelligence blended with
little spite, delusion and the inability to figure out why people
laugh at you...

ah, your freedom of speech.........posting a nazi's quote as a
sig.......are you one of the pascifists that he wants to squelch??

i don't plan on asking you to defend america, you are too busy being an apologist for being american.....lol

there is a saying in sports, when you have a player that is of a lesser caliber than the team star, he is told that he could not carry the star's jock strap...

when i see a 19 year old fighting down to her last bullet, getting stabbed, broken and held captive, i think about some of the evil on the planet and then, as an after thought of course, I think about how some people could not carry her tampons.....figure out the analogy.......

and the one thing that makes me absolutely giddy with joy is the fact that YOU have to wake up in the morning look in the mirror and see what you are. take a chance and smile, say out loud, "i'm gonna try and be nice today, i'm gonna make a new friend....."

on second thought forget it.....
pearls start out as sand..........guess where you are in the process?

politcal correctness and freedom of speech be damned.

thanks and if this gets me kicked off the board, it was nice knowing you all.........love you all!

That's acting? I never want to see the real thing. Makes me wish we could bring all our people who are buried there home and rebury them here where they belong. Next time France gets attacked, I hope she doesn't call us to save her behind ... again. And if she does, I hope whoever is president says: been there, done that, not going to do it again.

Hot "off" the TV ticker tape thingy. The Russian Public Opinion Foundation poll results are in. 58% of the Russians polled not only are against the war, but hope that Saddam "wins." 3 % support the coalition. Guess that means along with having to go without my French wine and Gerard Depardeau, I'll have to add babushkas and borscht to my list of "won't buys." What a sacrifice!

And Richard, a nice Calif. Chardonnay and a date with Tom Hanks sounds fine by me!

Polluting the soil eh? Nice. Well, maybe we SHOULD exhume the bodies and bring them home and put them in Arlington. And next time they find themselves in a bind they can fend for themselves. I, for one, would be greatly disappointed if the U.S. EVER helped their sorry butts again.
