HOW DID YOU PICK THE NAME FOR YOUR DOG? who, what or where?

Our first Schnauzer was named "Kona" after our many visits to the beautiful island of Hawaii.
Our second Schnauzer was named "Miss Daisy"
after the charactor in "Driving Miss Daisy."
Little did we dream that Miss Daisy would be as independent as the charactor in the movie.

Our third Schnauzer was named "Dom Perignon of Green Acres", actually the breeder named him since we got him at eight months. We didn't care to say come Dom Perignon so he became "Perry." :D :D :D

Poco's previous owner called her Poco because she is a Cuban breed (havana, cuba)(havanese) and Poco means "little one" in Spanish and she's a little dog. She acts like a BigDog though!! :D

Killian (rescued) already had his name for 2 1/2 years, so I kept it. I think they might have called him Killian Red because he is a black/red GSD.

Shiloh (rescued) also came with her name and I was always interested in Shiloh Shepherds, so we kept it, too.

Daisy just seemed to fit... we don't really have a reason why :) She just looked like a Daisy!

Shaianne's name at the Humane Soc was Tara. Well a lady I work with that don't particulary care for name is Tara. At first I was going to call her Lady or Princess b/c that is what she acted like. Little did I know. :o ;) But I decided I wanted a more original name than that, I bought a baby name book. I found Peta which means golden eagle which I thought was really cool b/c she is a golden color and graceful for the most part like an eagle. But my sister said that sounded like "people for the ethical treatment for animals" of course she said I should name her Bambi, b/c she looks like a deer!!
I found the name Cheyanne, but decided to change the spelling to Shaianne b/c my name starts with an s also.

Well I got the name Tiger from my grandma's idea. She lived by a golf course and her favorite golfer is Tiger Woods. So that's when i decided to name my dog Tiger! :D

Hans was already named by my husband's father. He passed away and we got Hans. My husband's father used to have a schnauzer named Fritz. I thought the name was so cute and that's how Fritz got his name!

Our first greyhound was named "Lady Mae Paula," and she understood "Paula," so that is what she goes by. Our second greyhound was named "Ron Ott," called "Willey," but didn't understand either name. He was so sweet, and such an instant pal to Paula, that we changed his name to "Buddy." Our spitz mix was 6 months old when we found her, and we didn't think we'd be keeping her. We didn't want to pick a name for her, so we just called her "Puppy." Well, we kept her, and by that time, she was answering to Puppy, which we eventually shortened to "Pup." Our third greyhound was named "Little Chic" but called "Boo." We would have changed the name Boo, because it is so close to No, but we had Boo in first as a foster dog, so we had to keep her name! :D

On the ride home from picking up my new puppy, I kept trying out names for her. I must have gone through dozens and dozens. When I came to "Hannah" it just seemed to suit her. She came from a breeder in Havana, IL, so she was Hannah from Havana. After several months, she got the middle name Noel, due to the fact that we had to say, "Hannah, no" so many times, I figured I might as well make it part of her name ;)

When I was a kid I went to school with a boy who was called "Tucker". There is a poodle in our neighborhood named Tucker and I always thought that was a cute name for a dog. When "Buddy" came into our lives, I thought he should have a new name to signify a new start in life, and Tucker seemed to fit him perfectly. After several months Tucker got a middle name as well. He is Tucker Love.

My Australian shepherd got his name Bandit because around his eyes he has two black rings, like a bandit. Mr. Beagley (these are my only 2 dogs I am going to be able to keep because we are losing chickens to the other dogs) got his name because he is a Mr. (male) and he is a Beagle. And guess what! I am getting a puppy! One of my grandpa's Australian cattledogs had puppies. There were 4 red ones and 1 blue. I am getting the little male blue, he is only 7 weeks old, and I don't know what to name him. His nickname is Bashful Black (he's mostly black right now). I was thinking Smokey so I could have Smokey and The Bandit. I will post a picture later.

Carl came with the name Sharky. For those of you who know Carl, that name does not really fit his personality. :D We had become a fan of the Good Dog, Carl books years before and the name "Carl" was more than fitting. :)

Iris and Raven both came with their names fromt the breeder we got them from. They are good names, so we decided to keep them (keep the names, I mean). :)

[Dixie Belle]

I named Justin after a little boy that lived close to me. They were both hyper active. Mama started out as my sister's dog, called Spooky. However, my sister didn't seem to understand that you had to feed dogs to keep them alive, so "Spooky" became mine. (Daddy's word is law.) I hated the name, so I changed it to Brown Bay. Brown is the color of her eyes, and Bay from the way that she barked. A couple of years later, she had puppies, and we just started calling her Mama. It stuck.
Dixie Belle was a little harder to name. We had talked about different names, but still had not decided. After we picked her up, we started again. My husband liked Dixie. I liked Belle, so we put them together.

Kilo was already named when we got him. When I asked who to write the check out to. They said the last name I about started choking. His name is well known for drug sales in our area. Gee, I wonder what Kilo was named after.
We originally named Dakota Voyager because I wanted a name associated with traveling since he's a husky and they love to run and explore. We changed it when I was pregnant because we thought Voyager would have been too hard for our little one to pronounce and I always liked Dakota.
We picked Patience for our abused stray because we all needed a lot of patience when she first came to live with us.

The stories about how everybody decided on their dogs names are wonderful, I love reading about them. I didn't realize how many of our dogs were rescues, listening to you all have convinced me if we ever get another dog it will come from the Senior Dog Rescue. I admire everyone on this site for their love, compassion, and loyalty to their animals, whether it be dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, etc. etc. It's wonderful to be associated with such a caring group of people.

My name stories aren't as great as everyone elses but I will share anyway. I just loved reading thru these stories though. It is so neat how we put so much thought into naming our fur-kids.

RachelJ, your story about Hannah Noel is precious... I guess every female dog's middle name should be Noel for that reason :D! The boys can have "Knoll"

Anyway, My mom, sister and I went and picked Lexi out of the remaining pups in this ladies litter... I drove home while my mom held her and just kept trying to think of a great name. I remembered my dad always saying that dogs should have good, short and clear names so they respond better. I always wanted something unique.. Well, I love names with the letter 'X' in them... So, Lexi came about and it stuck!

Sasha was already named by our friends who gave her to us since they couldn't keep her anymore. No way were we going to change it!

Maddie, my little lost baby that I found got her name because I love that name first of all, and when I went to visit her in the pound I would say it to her and it just sounded so good and fit soooo well. Finally hubbie agreed to let me call her that. Now, she is called 'MAD DOG', Crazy Dog, Psycho Dog, Madders, Mad Maddie, Maniac Maddie and a few others... believe me, her middle name is just plain 'NO'!

We call the other two Lexer-Mexer and Sasha-Masha... you know, the baby talk that probably makes them roll their eyes at you.

That's our story and we're stickin' to it!
