Kai's ears are very non sheltie like...they're sorta floppy and kinda wide apart..here's a pic of his ears
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid54/p75f2432fa683b3d42c083b3c75aa7cda/fc854b5c.jpg

here's what it's supposed to look like..

i lifted his ears up yesterday to see what he would look like with the ears in the correct position...boy he looked exactly like a sheltie...just perfect. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get them up? is surgery an option? I don't really want to refer to it...if it's pain for him...

Awww. I like his ears the way they are. :) I know as a pup they can be taped up and the cartilage will harden in the upright position with the tips turned down. I don't think you could do anything non-surgical now, though. They're too cute just like they are. :D

Kai is a boy ;)

The breeder we got Mickey at told us if we wanted that "sheltie look", we would have to glue his ears together. Just the tip glued to some of that extra hair at the bottom. We do that and sometimes it unglues and we have to re-do it and, it is such a pain! But it is staying. If you wanna try that, I am not sure if it is too late (i don't see why), but the glue we use is regular fabric glue you get at those art & crafts stores. :)

shelties get their ears pinned when they are pups so they will stand streight up and flop @ the tips. your dog just didnt get his ears pinned thats all ..

I don't think anything should be done for his ears unless its for a medical reason. I think dogs should be able to stay how they are naturally and not altered for looks.

Kai is adorable - cuter than if he looked like a "normal" sheltie - in my opinion!

If his ears were gonna be "up ears" you would have had to be very careful about them, taping/gluing them up, etc., when he was a puppy, and the cartilage was forming. Some Shelties ears are natually more UP than others, that's all. There's nothing you can do about it now that he's grown up but love him the way he is!

When the Sheltie at work is very happy (like when I get to work in the morning), his ears get kinda like Kai's ears, only even flatter down, so it looks like he's got no ears at all. Then I say "Where are your ears?" and that (sometimes) makes him prick them back up! :) Silly doggie!

It is kinda like docking off cockers tails and rotties tails ect.. or like geting dew claws removed it isnt nessisary . My dog has her dew claws :)

They dock cocker tails because cockers had really long tails and wag them so much they hurt people...... but if their isnt any reason for this stuff I dont think they should do it just for looks. Kai is cute the way she is!:)

I don't like people docking or do anything with the dogs tails or ears. They were born the way they are and that's how they should be left. It gives them mor personality and differences between other animals. Why Dock tails?? It gives them a look sorta like. I mean, what if someone just came and cut off all of your hair, or made your ears stick out more??? I love doggie tails and would never want a dog's tail chopped off, I see no reason for it.

Collie's ears are suppose to tip like that too. Here's what they
should look like:

But here's what my Collie's look like:

Or sometimes like this :):

The breeder talked to me about the glueing and the taping and
my mom really wanted me to do it, but I just didn't see the point.
He's not a show dog, so I figured I'd take the Doris Day approach.
Que Sera Sera.

And I too think Kai's look cute just the way they are.

I think I like them the way they are now..he's just unique. Even if I wanted to, I don't think I could do anything non-surgical at this time because he's probably really developed by now. =]

Par--your collie is just too cute!

pinning over the ears does not hurt them at all so that is why i don't mind doing it to mickey. besides, in my personal opinion i like ears when they are flopped over. kai's are really cute too though :D

Teddy wants to know why he and Huney were not informed there ears were "diffrent"

I think he looks just fine the way he is, besides its easier for them to hear anyways :p ;)

I think they're cute either way but I like it when the ears flop down. I'm not cruel just because I pin back my dog's ears. Am I?

No, not at all! I think it's cruel to alter the animal for vanity's sake when it causes pain. If the dog's a puppy and what you're doing causes no pain (like ear taping and gluing, if done right), then go ahead. I'm only against it when the dog is an adult and it wouldn't make a difference, or if it causes unnecessary pain.
And Mickey's cute either way!:D

Thanks Kai!

Prima, I didn't see anything wrong with doing the gluing and
taping thing, like you say it doesn't hurt them. In my case
though I ultimately didn't care if Oz's ears were up or down,
so I didn't think it was worth the effort.

Hehe :D It was funny when Mickey's ears unglued awhile back. He had one up and one down. It was cute but then it kept flipping over and ... yeah. We put the glue back on :p
