Hey,
My ducth rabbit has somthing that looks like a big scab on the inside of her ear. It goes down as far as I can see. Dose any one know what this could be?

Thanks,
Kristen

How are the rabbits nails?

have they been trimmed in a while?

she might have just scratched to hard.

Have you tried cleaning around the scab? Q-tip and water, just to wash away the dirt.

Those are about my only suggestions.

Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't become infected.

I agree with the possible scratch theory and you can also use rubbibg alcohol to clean up the scab. Check it to make sure it heals and does not get worse. Good luck.

My rabbits nails did not look to long, so I called the bunny farm where I got her from. They thought it was ear mights. They told me to put three drops of baby oil and tow drops of pain relief that had camphor and phenol in it. it worked!:)

Yikes, poor bunny! I'd watch it carefully for the next few weeks, just in case! What's her name, and how old is she?

If it ears mites, one treatment may not be enough. Keep checking the ears and best of luck.

My bunny's name is Blessing. She is about 4 1/2 months.:)

What a sweet name! Is she a lop-eared bunny? Miss Hoppy, as you see in my avatar, is an up-eared bunny, but I know people who own lops have to be viugilant about those ears!

Could she have caught herself on anything in the cage/house/garden?

Or could she have been bitten/scratched by another animal? Another bunny or cat or something?

I would be strongly tempted to get that bunny to a rabbit-specialist vet. If it is ear mites, that can lead to serious problem farther down the line, including head tilt. Your bunny may need a course of Invermectin....shots are more effective than oral medication. And yet you do have to get that ear cleaned out, this is nothing to ignore. Good luck!
see www.rabbit.org to find a rabbit-veteranarian in your area.

Well, I've never had to deal with mites, but Icarus (my rat) has a nasty scab in his ear from his stupid nails.....I cut them constantly, but they're still so long!!! Grrrr...I'm guessing it's because he has roof rat in him and they need long nails to climb, cuz Frisco has short nails and he's pure fancy rat...

Hi,
Thanks for your advice. Blessing's ear is doing a lot better. I think what ever she had is spreading. I now have it and her brother Joshua has it. Mine is almost better now because I treated it with the same stuff I used on her. I just started treating Joshua and he looked a lot better today.:) I just hope our other bunny Ducth stays ok.

Oh no! YOU have it? Yucky blah...
So it must be mites than right?
