I always like to have amaryllis around the Holidays. The bulbs will usually flower for a few years and that's it.

Last year was the third year or so for one bulb I had. I did all the things you ae suppose to do. Dug it up, put it in a dark, cool place for a month, brought it back out, etc.

It sprouted a few greens then nothing.

So I bought a new one this year -- which performed nicely. The old one I just left planted. It was in a planter -- hidden in the foliage. I would occasionally splash some water on it.

Two weeks ago I noticed sprouts -- so I put it in the window in the sun.

Here's what I had last yesterday....

Wow, it worked! I'm keeping the wonderful plant I got, hoping it will blossom again sometime - should I put it in the cellar? For how long? The one I've got has in the end something which look like seeds in a shell? But it has one huge onion in the pot! It's the nicest I've ever had!!

Gorgeous!

The Amaryllis always reminds me of my grandmother. She used to plant them also. During the holidays they were always so big and pretty.

Randi...suppose to treat like any plant -- water, sun, maybe outside in the summer -- until about 2 months before you want to bloom. Then you take out of the dirt and let "rest" in a cool dark place for a month before replanting.

I did none of that with this one this year! To the right of it is the one that bloomed at the Holidays!

Beautiful! I love amaryllises, the only problem with them is that you have to be so careful with watering them or they will get sooo long (and possible break off).
