View Full Version : Bassett is really sick... they don't know what's wrong with her

I just went to the vet. her exact words were "we've got a kitty with some serious problems here." Either her chest cavity is filled with fluid, or her lung tissue is filled with fluid. Her blood pressure was 160 - way too high. The vet could see her pulse in her jugular, which is a bad sign. I had to leave her there while they do some x-rays on her, but the vet says she needs an ultrasound and stuff with a specialist, which costs at least $400 and I don't have the money to do it. I'm praying so hard that she can be well. I can't lose Bassett - not my baby..

Naomi ~

Ask you Vet to do a phone consult with whoever She considers to be an "expert" on Bassett's condition.

Ask you Vet where the nearest Vet School is - and ask if they might consider treating Bassett at a reduced cost.

And don't be afraid to ask Your Vet if she will allow you to make monthly payments to spread out the cost of treating Bassett... MOST Vets will do that.

We'll all keep everything crossed and sent up some Prayers - that's sure to help.

Give Bassett a gentle {{{Hugg}}} when you visit.

I did ask about a payment plan, but she said this specialist (he's an internalist???) doesn't allow that. But my vet office does as far as I know.

Thank you all for the prayers. She and I both need them right now :( :( :(

God?

Would you please take care of sweet Bassett and her mommy right now? Bassett is real sick and the vet just doesn't know what to do. Please place your hand upon the doctors and help them to help our Bassett.

Please also be with her mommy, she is really worried and wants her sweet girl to get better and grow old with her.

I ask this in Jesus' name.

Amen

There's got to be more than one "specialist" in the field -
Ask Your Vet to pick another one that WILL work with you to either adjust the prices or offer you a payment plan.

Memo: Don't take NO for the final answer! ;)

I just heard from the vet. Bassett's chest cavity if filled with a fatty, white fluid called chyle from her thorasic duct (don't know if I spelled throasic right). The vet was able to take some of the fluid out with a syringe and so they are testing it tomorrow at the lab. It could be cancer or cardio myopothy.. the vet won't know until she gets the results back. Bassett got mad and wouldn't let them drain out all the fluid (that's my girl *sad smile*) so tomorrow, under heavy sedation and pain control (they don't want to put her out because this might be a heart problem) they will put a chest tube in and drain out the fluid so she can breathe. She has to stay overnight at the vet tonight and tomorrow because one thing that's supposed to be good for this is cage rest; she's not supposed to move around. The vet didn't say why - maybe because more fluid leaks out? I don't know. The vet said we have to go in steps - we won't take the next step until the results are back from the lab, which won't be until Friday.

I asked about a payment plan. My vet will allow me to work out a payment plan, but the specialist, who works in Washington and comes up to Canada once a month to take referrals, won't take a payment plan. So when the time comes, I will have to find a way to pay for the ultrasound. I won't even know if an ultrasound is worth it until the test results come back, because the results might determine if it's even treatable.

I took Bassett in because I thought she was too fat and might have asthma or something. I had no idea she was slowly suffocating *CRY*. Thank god I listened to my gut and had this checked out. I have had a couple people tell me that she seemed fine so maybe that's "just how she breathes" but something told me to look into it further. I just wish I had done it sooner. Has anyone heard of this? Does anyone know if this is treatable? I'm so scared for my little girl. I love all my kids but Bassett is that one special one - the one that really digs the claws into the heart. She was my first companion cat; she attached herself to me and is loyal to me in ways that dogs are usually loyal to their humans.

God, please make her ok.. please don't take her just yet.. please let her have a little more time with me and her sisters.. please, please, please don't rip out that part of my heart just yet..

Naomi, my heart is going out to you. I am sending all the good thoughts I have to Bassett.

We went through this last year with Mini, but the x-ray showed his heart was filling with blood, not white fluid, so I can't provide any more insight. It's impossible to tell at this stage so I hope the tests show something conclusive and curable.

If you feel up to it, try some Google searches for feline heart disease, heart murmurs, cardiomyopathy, cancer etc. It of course doesn't replace veterinary diagnosis, but when we were going through this, it just helped me feel better because I was more informed of the possibilities and knew that other people had gone through the same thing.

Please let us know as soon as you hear something.

I'm a bit concerned that your specialist doesn't make payment plans. Either has been burnt before or not an animal lover? Just seems strange.

I don't know what to say except that I have never heard of a viewing pulse from the jugular vein :( Oh dear.

Did the vet tap her chest for any fluid?? How old is he/she? They will spin down the fluids in a centrifuge in the lab and record the results. You should hear from them ASAP

Believe it or not 400 bucks for an ultrasound and dianostics is very very cheap. Owners spead over a grand for procedures at the local hospital here.

Oh dear. :(

Nomilynn
01-15-2003, 11:46 PM
Bassett is only 3 years old. Her birthday is in April. The vet said the fluid is a milky white colour, indicating it's coming from the thoracic duct. I looked it up on the internet, and it's called Feline Chylothorax. It can be caused by a bunch of things that the vet is testing for with the fluids she got tonight. They will be draining the rest of the fluid in the morning, when they can monitor her more carefully.

Depending on the test results, I *will* find a way to pay for Bassett's treatment. However, if she will suffer from it, I have another decision to make.

I'm not doing very well, and I'm really upset about all this. So if my posts don't make sense, please understand that this is really difficult for me.

Thank you all for the kind wishes.

Oh Nomilynn, I'm so sorry. I looked up Feline Chylothorax, and it seems it can either be something really serious or something easily treated, depending on how they got it and how long they had it. Let's hope and pray that she has the treatable type. Please don't think beyond to the "final decision" just yet - you need to keep good energies directed to little Bassett. Don't forget to kiss your other kitties, too - they probably miss their "sister" as much as you do. {{{{{{{Hugs and hope}}}}}}}}}

Nomilynn,

I am so sorry to read about Bassett. I know that it is very difficult when one of our "babies" becomes ill especially when there seems that there is nothing we can do to help them.

Depending on what the test results are, have you maybe thought about taking Bassett to a specialist in Vancouver? Maybe they would permit you to develop a payment plan...

My heart and prayers are with you. When our babies are sick, somehow we find the way to pay for the vet. But like you said (and like what I just went through with Casey) there comes a time when no amount of money is going to help ease their hurt so you have to make that "ultimate" decision. I hope and pray it does not come to that for you. If you ever feel like talking, please don't hesitate to either e-mail me or call me (I'll PM you with my phone number).

Dear God,

Here we are again, asking for your help for sweet Bassett. Bassett had some tests, thank you for helping the doctor to figure out what is wrong.

Lord, we know you created this sweet kitty for a purpose. Her mommy is fearful that this may be the end for this angel you have given her. Would you please let Bassett live a long, happy life? Her mommy and her sisters would really appriciate it.

Thank you for Bassett and her mommy. Please be with them during this uncertain time.

Amen.

Know that we are all sending our prayers to God, He'll hear us. I just know it. Kiss your sweeties at home for me, as well as our little sickie, Bassett.

Take care.

Thank you all for your prayers. I called the vet just a moment ago, and they haven't started her treatment yet because they've been doing surgeries all morning. However, the tech said that she's eating and acting more calmly than last night, which will be good for her blood pressure. Also, when I called the tech said that Bassett stopped what she was doing and looked out to the office, as if she knew it was me on the phone! It wouldn't suprose me if she did know. I have a bunch of questions that I want to talk to the vet about, so I kind of have a phone appt. for 1:45. Maybe I will know more then.

I know I slept last night, but I sure don't feel like I did. My head hurts and my entire body is stiff.. but when I talk to the vet I will see if I can go visit Bassett. If they have her sedated I won't go, because I think that would be unhealthy for both her and I.

Please keep the prayers coming.. Just that Bassett has calmed some makes me know that they are working.

Thanks so much, and I love you all.

Well, I just got off the phone with the vet. She had thought Bassett might be able to come home tongiht, but she can't. They had to put her out with gas to draw the fluid out of her chest, because Bassett wasn't cooperating.. hehe.. she's feisty! Anyway, they drew out 55cc but I don't know how to convert that.. I have no clue. Anyway, apparently it's a lot. Tomorrow I will have results back from the fluid sample and a blood panel, so tomorrow is basically decision day. I feel a sense of dread.. I just feel like it's going to be bad news :( I told the vet that over the summer I think Bassett knocked a TV off a dresser, and so she might have injured herself. The vet was interested and said that she would look into it.. she had sort of ruled out trauma because Bassett is indoors. However, I kind of hope it is trauma and not a heart condition because then it's not going to stay with her forever. However, the vet seems to be leaning toward a heart problem.

The results will be in tomorrow morning, so I will let everyone know what the scoop is then. Please continiue praying for her, as I think the prayers are helping.

there is more emphasis on the front part, like BASSett.. it's pronounced like basset hound but that's not how she got her name. When I got her, I thought she looked like tiger ice cream, which is orange ice cream with black licorice. I didn't want to name her Tiger.. I thought it was too common. I also really didn't think she looked like a Licorice either, so I went with Bassett, which is a brand of licorice candies:

Bassett was able to come tonight. The vet says that Bassett is feline leuk/FIV clear, so the problem is either a tumour that isn't throwing off cells, her heart is severely damaged, or she has a ruptured thorasic duct. All her treatments so far have cost me $420 and we aren't done yet. I still have to have her ultrasound done. There is a clinic in Burnaby, BC that I can take her to, but it's VERY expensive. I will call them tomorrow to see what their prices are like, but the vet said that it could be around $1500 for everything they have to do :( I just want Bassett to be well, and so I'll find the money. Just after having the fluid removed, her breathing is drastically improved. She seems much more at ease. That in itself is a comfort, but I just want her to be ok.

Thank you all for the prayers. Please keep them coming - we aren't out of the woods yet.

We're crying tears of joy that you and your beloved Bassett are together again. We will continue to send you our prayers and our most positive thoughts your way. I know how important it is to be able to hold your baby, to smell her fur, look into her eyes and tell her how very loved she is. Life is so tentative. My best big boy, Mr. B., was just diagnosed with diabetes this week and I share those fears, uncertainties and feelings of dread you are experiencing. My whole family sends you our love and best wishes for Bassett's speedy recovery. And please give your dear girl a gentle kiss and soft hugs from all us here. Love, Sandra, Mr. B and Oliver.

I am very glad that Bassett gets to be home with you.
I did feel as Vio & Juni said;

" I followed this thread from the beginning, but I was so sad about it that I couldn't write anything.
I hope the vet will find the right treatment for her and you, with us, will have her for many years."

This must be so stressful for both of you. Having her home again
hopefully will let you both feel better. Now that the vets know
what it is'nt, maybe they are closer to finding a way to make
her better completely. You will stay in my prayers for a complete
recovery for sweet Bassett.

Bassett is doing well after the weekend. She is on a heart medication and an antibiotic, but the antibiotic was more preventative because there was a abnormality in her blood reading but the vet thought it might have to do with something else. However, she didn't want to have Bassett have an infection so we are treating it just in case. She is still breathing better but I'm watching it REALLY closely. Also she is being a very good girl and letting me give her her pills and medicine without too much fuss.

Other than that, money is the only other concern. Her bill was $420 and the ultrasound and other tests are another $375 at least, plus I have to take her across the ferry to do the tests (I found a clinic in Burnaby that does what I need done). They are also getting me in as soon as there is an opening so I'm grateful for that. I just have to make sure I keep up with school if I have to miss classes to get her to the clinic.

Thank you all for your contiued support and prayers. It's nice to know I can come here and vent and not have someone say "well it's just a cat." Sadly, that's been the case in most of the people I've talked to. They say, "you are not thinking clearly because you aren't thinking of the quality of life for Bassett, and it's an awful lot of money for just a pet." Well, that makes me really angry. I can't just let Bassett die - I have to try. I'm doing what the vet says I need to do. I flat out asked the vet, "is the tests worth it or is she going to die?" and the vet said "she has to have the ultrasound without a doubt - it has to be done" so I figure that means there is some hope for her recovery. What kind of person would I be if I said "oh well it's not worth trying?" :( Anyway, some people have been really good about it. My friends came over this weekend and were really supportive, and even helped me with the costs of a few groceries. At least I know that I have them and everyone here at PT to support me. Thank you all so much for everything. It really helps.

Naomi,

Those ignoramuses who make stupid comments like that are just plain ignorant. "Alot of money for just a pet" is the most assanine remark I've heard. But don't feel alone because I went through it with Casey. My comeback was always "All that money for just a kid????" They'd have this dumbfounded look on their faces like there is a difference. The best thing to do with those idiots is to ignore them for them know NOT what they're talking about.

Hang in there.

I want to thank you all again for the continiued support. Everyone has been wonderful and I appreciate everyone's help. I got the results back from Bassett's urine sample test, and it is showing decreased kidney function, which the vet thinks is a result of hypertension. However, she doesn't want to start medicating and have it be a total different problem. That's why the ultrasound is the next crucial step.

I have had some people offer to help pay for this treatment, and I just want to say to them thank you SO much. I thought I would post here how that process might work rather than type a bunch of PM's. However, I'm NOT asking for money. I've been ok so far, and even if no one could offer help I would still find a way to do it. But, like I said, some people have offered help and have asked for some information.

The critcal care clinic does not accept third party cheques, nor does it accept cheques in a currency other than Canadian money, which makes sense. However, the girl said that money orders , made out to "ANIMAL CRITICAL CARE GROUP" are fine. Also, the money orders would have to be sent to me, not directly to the clinic because she was afraid that they might get lost because money order's aren't usually labelled with a memo line like a cheque. If anyone has any more questions, please PM or email me. I'm just posting the money order option because I totally understand being hesitant about all this. I cannot cash a money order made out to another name and organization.

Again, I'm not asking for money. I appreciate the help that has been offered more than I can possibly say, and I thank you SOOO much for everything. Just knowing that you are all here and acting as my extensive support system has been enough. Thank you, I love you all dearly, and your friendship is treasured.

Well, some good news and some bad news. The good news is, the ultrasound shows that Bassett doesn't appear to have any heart problems and has no tumours. It also wasn't as costly as I had thought, so that was a nice suprise. However, the vet may need to do more tests now. This is the bad news part - they don't know why Bassett has a leaky thoracic duct! I don't know if this means she will need exploratory surgery or what? I will have to make an appointment later this week, after the vet has looked over the results from the radiologist.

Anyway, it's comforting to know that Bassett has no heart trouble, and no tumours. But I still wish I knew what was wrong with her :(

I got Slick's card - it was so sweet and I feel so blessed. All the money people have donated to Bassett's cause is a true blessing. If there is any money left over after the vet is done with Bassett, I will donate it to a shelter or a adoption program for orphaned kittens.

Well, I must go for now. I have a kitty to cuddle :) Thank you all again - you are all amazing!

Hi all!

Well, we are home after our trip to Burnaby. I have heard from the vet, and I have an appointment this afternoon to take Bassett in and see if she needs her chest drained again, and also to discuss all the results from the tests and our options from here. There is a drug we can try (I don't know how to spell it but it's pronounced like "Rootin" or the vet has said there are surgical options. So today I will have the chance to go in and see what the best plan of action is.

Other than that, Bassett is doing well. She was a VERY good girl for the ultrasound procedure.. I couldn't believe she was so well behaved. Maybe she FINALLY gets that we are doing this for her own good! :p Anyhow, I will let everyone know how things look after I've talked to the vet today.

Thank you all again for your continued support. It's a huge comfort!

This drug is supposed to lessen the amount of fluid produced - in some cases stop it all together, and it breaks down the fatty component of the fluid, making it easier to absorb and not stay in the chest. From what I understand, the fluid is in the chest cavity, not the lungs. Here are a couple of websites Ive found about the disease:

http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/chylothorax.html
http://rev.tamu.edu/stories/02/091902-3.html
http://www.acatclinic.com/library/CHYLO.htm

Hopefully those sites will help clear up the situation more. I will try and find a site explaining the surgical option more after I read what the vet gave me.

Bassett has to spend the night at the vet's. Her drain was supposed to be done this morning, but the vet had to do an emergency leg amputation, so they aren't starting it until now. Because Bassett has to be put out for the procedure, they want to monitor her overnight.

I will let you know what's up when she comes home tomorrow!

Hi everyone!

Bassett is home again. They took another 55 cc out, which seems like a lot after only having it done a week and a half ago :( Anyway, she's SO happy to be home and she's breathing better again. She's had some supper, took her pills, played with her sisters and now she's napping somewhere! What a day!

Naomi,
How long before the pills work? Do you think you'll have to bring her back in again for another draining?

Glad she's home and happy. I"m keeping you both in my prayers.

We are giving the pills a month to see how and if they help. As for another chest drain, I just have to watch her breathing and see how quickly it gets bad. I really hope these pills will help. I don't want to have to keep putting her through the chest draining.

What good news that not only is she home but she's eating, playing and of course napping  as usual. :)

Hopefully the pills will do the trick. If they do, does that mean she has to stay on them forever? Even if that's the case, it's much better than the alternative.

Keep getting better sweety. Hugs, prayers, thoughts, crossings, good vibes and anything else that will help are still going out to both of you. :)

Thanks everyone :) If the pills work, she would likely have to be on them forever. With this condition, while there is no cure, sometimes it just goes away. Like, if her thoracic duct has a tear or something, it can heal itself over time. However, the tube is so tiny it's nearly impossible to go in there and search for the tear - too much trauma for a shakey maybe.

However, the pills aren't expensive. The bottle I JUST got was only $5 because it's shelf life was to expire at the end of February. Well, they will be gone by then, at three times a day! So I just have to keep searching for bargains and stuff. And even at that, it's only $10 normally. I would say $20 a month is totally worth it for my girl! :D

But she is now on the pills for several days and is doing fine isn't she? So we hope really that it helps. :)

So far things are going well. It's probably too soon to know how well she's doing on the pills as far as real medical findings, but I can tell you she's breathing better this drain than the last drain, after the same amount of time, and she's more playful now than she has been in months. :D So I'm sure that's good news! :D
