Last Updated Friday, April 10, 2015 4:17PM MDT A Calgary woman has been fined $10,000 and barred from owning more than two animals at a time after entering a guilty plea in connection to the June 2014 seizure of more than 30 dogs from a home in Acadia.
On May 13, 2014, police and bylaw officers responded to a home in 8000 block of Addison Drive S.E. after a neighbour became concerned after not seeing the homeowner for several days. The neighbour encountered dozens of dogs covered in feces.
According to officials with the Calgary Humane Society, between 40 and 50 dogs, of various breeds, were seized from the residence. Veterinarians considered 17 of the dogs to be in medical distress.

Following an investigation into the matter, the homeowner, Beverly Jean Creed, was charged with numerous counts of causing or permitting an animal to be in distress under the Animal Protection Act of Alberta.
On Friday, Beverly Jean Creed entered a guilty plea in connection to the charges.
According to Brad Nichols, Calgary Humane Society’s manager of cruelty investigations, the fine is the largest Animal Cruelty penalty case in Calgary’s history.
“Hopefully this sentence acts as a deterrent for those warehousing animals for any purpose. This case demonstrates how severely quality of care can drop off with a large population of animals,” said Nichols.
Nichols adds restricting Creed from owning more than two animals at a time is a significant penalty as it inhibits the well-known member of the city’s dog show community from breeding animals, pet sitting or participating in mass showings.
