I saw the ad, Karen, for your "Last cat... just kidding" shirts. Very cute!

Today I saw a stuffed ..toy? or such that reminded me of that, but in a bad way. It had a tag on it saying something like "This is your last cat," or "the last cat you'll ever need," or such. And it is labeled "Earl, the Dead Cat." It's a limp cat figure, with X-ed out eyes and tongue sticking out. The label says it's trouble-free.. no feeding, no shedding, no hairballs, and so on.

This is for sale in a store in Ann Arbor that is a boutique-type place specializing in gourmet/organic/healthy supplies for dogs and cats and gift and personal items for those who love them.

I told the guy minding the place that I didn't like that or that they were carrying such a thing. He said some people like it, some don't. I said I don't. He said, excusing it, "It's just supposed to be funny." I said I don't think it is, and would he please pass the word along to whoever in charge regarding customer reactions to their products.

Was I over-reacting?

Thanks. I just wanted to tell people like-minded to me about this and see what you think.

Yeah, not funny, kinda dumb. Hopefully no one buys them! You can tell him about our "Last Cat" shirts instead - if he orders a bunch he'd get a shipping discount ;)

Pat, I have what can be termed a cynical "wicked sense of humour", but the T-shirt you describe disgusts me. I would probably not shop in that store.

That is truly disgusting Pat, and who knows that that toy may inspire a lunatic to harm a real Cat.

It's not a t-shirt, it's a stuffed toy (TOY?). And I happened to think, perhaps it's also meant as a dog toy. Which is even worse.. like, of course dogs like to play with dead cats, and they don't even have to make this one dead first.

That shop is supposedly about celebrating cats and dogs, how wonderful and precious they are, and the people who love and appreciate them, and those who might come to love and appreciate them with encouragement. It always had been, anyway. Maybe that's not so much the case now; ownership changed last year.

That's an interesting idea, Karen, see if maybe they'd take your "Last Cat.." shirts. That guy working there when I was there Saturday isn't the owner. I'll see if I can get down there another day when she might be in. (I can also repeat to her how disgusting and appalling I find that "toy" to be.)
