The author asks: "Why were the last days of my cat’s life handled so much more compassionately than those of my parents?"
I think the time difference has something to do with that, the years in which her parents died (mother 24 years ago and father 17 years ago) and then when her cat died (8-9 years ago). Ideas for medical professionals about terminal ailments and grief and helping the survivors deal with it have progressed a long way over the years.
I wonder how the last days of the cat's life would have been handled if she had died 24 years ago.
