I called the shelter yesterday and asked them to put me back on the list for kittens. Today I got the magic call; three babies had been transferred over from a WAY overcrowded shelter and needed a foster. These guys are happy, bouncy, playful, and frighteningly thin and dehydrated. The foster coordinator thinks they are so thin simply because the other shelter is so overwhelmingly crowded that they were not eating well. I think she's probably right...they are PIGS! When I put them in the bathroom at first, I put down some kibble and some canned food, and they nibbled at those. A few hours later, I poured them a bowl of KMR and they went NUTS! So I mixed some KMR in with their canned food and they all pigged out.

I don't know where they came from originally, but all three of them are super sociable, affectionate, and fun-loving. Even while riding in the car, they were bouncing around the carrier batting at their siblings' tails and looking quite cheerful.

This is General Grape. He wants to be in my lap or perched on my shoulder at all times. He's also a talker. If he can't reach my shoulder, he pats at my chest and asks "Mew? Mew? Put me up higher!"

The reason there aren't more pictures of Grape is because he was all over me and it's hard to photograph a cat on your shoulder!!

This is Private Pancake. He's a teeny bit jumpy around me, but loves to play and purrs when picked up. He also likes Jasper a LOT!

I had to take my bathrobes out of the bathroom because he kept trying to climb them.

Pancake is the most dehydrated of the three, but he's drinking a lot of KMR, so hopefully he will be better hydrated in the morning.

You can see how thin he is here. Poor guy.

The girl, Esmeralda. She was NOT impressed when Jasper came in at first. Her tail is quite impressive, don't you think?
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN0913.jpg

After a few moments, Essie decided that since Jasper's tail is such a wonderful plaything she would forgive him for being a dog and go make friends. It was a long time before her tail smoothed out all the way though!!

She is in better shape than her brothers physically, and she is SO beautiful! I'm half in love with her already, she has the most enchanting face.

Esmeralda likes her KMR too!

Aww, such fun! Sorry, sweetie, I cannot adopt you - I am very, very far away, and terribly allergic to kitties - even adorable ones like you! But I am sure someone will adopt you just as soon as your foster mom fattens you all up and gets you ready!

*melt* *melt* *melt* Miss Esmeralda, I would consider adopting you if I wasn't so gosh darn far away! I am sure you will go to a purr-fect forever home when you are ready though!

:D Well, I think the answer to the question of their poor weight is simply that they aren't weaned yet! This morning, their kibble and wet food slurry had both been nibbled at, but the bowl of KMR was polished clean! I poured another bowl and Essie and Pancake dove straight in! (Grape wanted lap time more than food!) Hooray! I'll weigh them when I get home so I can start to make sure they are gaining.

Oh no! You're not going to get me with this one!!! VERY tempting though. So darn adorable!!!
I wish I had enough money to take in another dog and another cat. Someday............................

I have no fear that you will help these babies grow and thrive to be adopted into their furrever homes. :D

Just gorgeous babies! At least they are eating/drinking on their own, no bottle feeds this time. I bet they will put on weight now. "All that food - for meeeeee-w?" Yes, babies, all for you. :D:love::love:

Any idea how old they are? 4 weeks?

Oh My! How cute and precious! Good for you for being a temporary mom. I'm pretty sure I could not be a foster because I would probably keep all of them.

They are about four weeks old, which is why the first shelter had been offering them solid food. They are definitely not quite ready for 100% solids yet. :)

Hee hee, I always worry about that - luckily since I started fostering in 2007 there has only been one who I just couldn't be parted with - and that's my baby Kyubey. :)

I have to admit, I am falling hard for General Grape....It will be hard to let him go, especially after watching him go from skinny waif to healthy cat!

All of these precious babies are adorable!! But General Grape would be the one I'd have the hardest time letting go of. What a sweet baby boy!:love:

Okay, where oh where is the cuteness overload warning?

I just was not prepared for so much cute! Hope you don't mind but I had to go back a few times just to see these beautiful babies again. Honestly can't say I have a favorite among those gorgeous faces filled with kitten wonder, curiosity, and mischief. I'm in love with each of them!

Thank you so very much for taking these babies in to care for. They couldn't be in better hands, with you there's no doubt that they'll grow, thrive, and know what it means to be loved. Would you give them a couple rounds of lovies from me?

Took some photos of their progress today...General Grape (now General Grapenut!) is still skinny, but I've been syringe-feeding him and he is gaining now. He is SUCH a love, I hate syringe-feeding him because it makes him run away from me, but until he's eating consistently it has to be done. His vet visit got rescheduled for tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have some answers then as to why his mouth seems so painful when he eats.

Grapenut!

That's not what the nail clippers are for!
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN1027.jpg

I wonder what that face was about, LOL! His skinny little thighs are the part of him that still looks really bad, but he'll get there...
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN1018.jpg

That's a better face!!

Private Pancake has a very mischievous streak! He would play from dawn until dusk, I think! Here are his wild eyes!
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN1004.jpg

Not too many good pics of him today because he's always ZOOMING everywhere - here he is in a rare moment of pause.
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN1017.jpg

And tackling his sister, of course!
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN1020.jpg

Esmeralda has an unusual tummy for a tabby - stripes instead of spots! Pancake has the usual spotted tummy, but hers is lovely too.
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN1022.jpg

She is turning into quite the dignified young lady. She purrs as soon as she is petted, and she wants nothing more than to be petted ALL the time.
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/cebogart/Foster%20pets/DSCN1012.jpg

I have a feeling she's going to be a tubby cat later on, as she is VERY food focused, and at five weeks is already looking a bit...er....thick. She'd probably be a good candidate for clicker training!

Had to come back since I needed another mega-dose of cuteness. Could I ask you to give Grapenut, Pancake, and Esmeralda lots and lots of lovies from me? I LOVE their names!

And how is General Grapenut doing?

Grapenut is doing great! He is still the smallest kitten, but he has progressed from frighteningly emaciated to merely a little on the thin side. :D He is 1lb 6oz, so he only needs to gain another 2oz before all the bubs can go get neutered!
