Anyone going to watch the "Dog Championships" on AP tonight? Was wondering if anyone participates in or has attended any of the big dog shows?? Would love to go to Westminster just to see all the breeds. Ever notice so many "Best in Shows" are the smaller breeds??? NEVER, or rarely ever see a golden, lab, etc. win! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif Seems like the more popular the breed, the less the judges want to give them recongnition! Have spoken to some friends in the "show dog" world who say it is VERY political.

Well, as soon as I open my big mouth, a GOLDEN wins "Best in Show!!" A gorgeous girl named (are you there Logan!!) Honey! What made it so special, was the relationship between the handler and the dog. For a change, the handler was the owner. And boy did she LOVE this dog. They interviewed her before the competition, and, with tears streaming down her face, she talked with such love and pride about her beautiful dog. It was to be, at age 7, Honey's last show. She was soooo proud of her and talked about what an honor it has been for HER to have such a special dog in her life. She said that although she didn't think Honey would win, they were going out in style! Made me cry too! I couldn't believe she won! What a wonderful way to end a "career!" But, I wasn't ALL wrong!! The Lab got about 10 seconds of the spotlight; just a brief mention as one of the dogs "you missed" during a commercial! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif Star was inconsolable!! Couldn't help but think of you Logan, and your beautiful Honey! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

That must have been neat! I think that was shown on AP recently. Star is in agility class, and watching it really gives us something to aspire to; to say the least!!

That's great, what breed is Star? We have a little black Schnauzer that would be a whiz,
she loves running, jumping, but I do believe she would just run out of the ring. She is that kind of dog, but we love her very much.
Good luck, it will be fun.

Sandra, I missed it as we had a big homework night last night. Notice I said we? It's like I'm in the fourth grade again!!!
I sure wish I had seen the "other Honey". My girl would make me proud in the ring too! I wonder if they will show it again. If you hear, please let me know.
Go Goldens!!!!! (You guys know I'm kidding. I love all dogs and other pets, just happen to have the two best Golden Retrievers in the world right now) http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Just checked another bulletin board I read and they said a Golden named Bentley won. I'd rather it be a Honey!!! What's up with that?

Ut Oh!!! Must have been subliminal, wishful thinking on my part!! I would have sworn on Star's beating little heart that her name was Honey! But....now that you said it....yeah, it was Bentley!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif I'm sooooooooo sorry Logan! Really, truly, I really thought it was Honey when I said it. Guess I just had the beautiful Honey on my mind! Forgive me PLEEEEEEASE!!!! And they do ususally repeat the show. Will let you know if I hear when.

It's ok, Sandra. At least your were thinking Golden!!!! Honey says there isn't another Honey as good as her anyway!!!!

Really, I must be suffering some major loss of brain cells. Actually, I fell asleep before the end. When I sort of woke up, they were already repeating the show, and all I heard, in my stupor, was that she won. Bentley, Honey, kind of close...NO??? Tell Honey I agree with her!!! She's the BEST!!!

I really wish the St. Bernard named Trusts Gentle Ben V Slaton (Ben) would have won. He was a beauty with a head piece to die for!

I must admit I love GSDs, but that St. Bernard was a beauty!!!! He was the most magnificent St. Bernard I've ever seen. Of course they only showed the GSD for a few seconds because he was on during the commercial break! Drats!

I agree. The St. Bernard was magnificent, and was almost a shoe-in to win!! What a face. Loved his expression, with his eyes almost shut. So beautiful. Sudilar, didn't it stink that they didn't show the GSD, and of course, the Lab!!! BOOOO!!! Two of the 3 most popular dog breeds, and they show a commercial when they're presented! I didn't even see a glimpse of the GSD and wondered whether he or she was even entered! As a matter of fact, I didn't see quite a few breeds, including a Pug, Husky, Irish setter and others I can't remember right now. But of course the Golden was quite a beauty, and the fact that she won at her last show was so nice.

It was nice that the Golden won because she was beautiful, too. The GSD sighting was so brief that if you blinked, you missed it!! GSDs don't win Best in Show very often. The last I remember was Covy Tucker Hill's Manhattan, what a MAGNIFICENT creature he was!!!!! They should pause for "station identification" during the shows. I hate to miss my favorite breeds!

I am sooo mad but we don't get Animal Planet around here; it's not even offered here. Did anyone notice the basset? Beautiful, I'm sure, but not as good as my Daisy of course. Congrats to all you Retriever owners out there, they sure are lovely dogs!

Daisy's Mom...Can't believe you don't get AP up there! Big Boo! Have you called the company and asked them why? We have ATT broad band here. Used to be MediaOne. I'm on the Cape and WE have it!!! As a matter of fact, the Bassett WAS stunning. The announcer really loved her! She got LOTS of "air time." Unlike the Lab!!

I remembered to watch but was also annoyed that the program was going on during commercials so many of the dogs were missed. They don't do that during Westminster!

Most unfortunately, we don't get Animal Planet in Newton, there is some reason that has to do with satellites and geography - the next town over gets it, but not us! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif That may also be the case in Westminster, which is probably even hillier!

We don't get AP here either. Our cable company is adding another channel and just did a poll asking if we preferred AP or PAX. Guess which I voted for. The good news is that USA channel shows Westminster Championship taped. I watched it last year. Two or three times actually. As they say "check your local listings". I sure it will be shown again.

Well, I intended to watch it, but missed it for some reason. Yes, dog showing is very political and EXPENSIVE! That was the culmination of several shows and you might just see that Golden at Westminster this year. I believe it is an invitation only type show, but I could be wrong. I do like the way they do their group classes and Best In Show with the breaks in between. But, here again, it's money talking. That's the way they did for the Agility championships. You were lucky to see four runs in each category and a Jack Russell Terrier (betcha didn't see one of those at that show, either) won one of the divisions. It was great!

That sucks that some of you don't get Animal Planet. When I move to my new apartment, I may have to get cable or DirectTV just to watch that. Wish they'd put it on regular channels.

As for small dogs doing the most winning, well, yes, but last year's Westminster winner was a Standard Schnauzer (I do believe) and I know the Standard Poodle often takes top honors. But, there was one year when the cutest little Pomeranian took it and you could just see attitude all over that ring when that little dog went around. It was adorable.

Yah we don't get it in the boonies! It IS pretty hilly here, we are at the foot of Wachusett Mountain (heard of it Karen? It's a skiing mountain). I keep hoping somehow it can get to us though! We have a summer place in New Hampshire that gets AP and I could watch it all day! I LOVE the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin is great! LOL

Actually, a Springer Spaniel won Westminster last year. The Schnauzer won in 1997! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif. I'm glued to the TV when it's on! I could never be a judge!! They'd all win! Sandra,
I watched the replay last night on Animal Planet. I couldn't make it through the whole thing, but was fortunate enough to see Bentley win the sporting group. Just missed him as best of show. Wasn't he lovely?

Check him out at www.montairgoldens.com (http://www.montairgoldens.com)

You know the Springer Spaniel that won last year at Westminster? Well, my friend Alex has a springer that is really closely related to the winning springer, but I forgot how they were related. But the bad thing is that she brags about her ALL the time! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif

I can relate, BoxerLover. Met a woman the other day who had the cutest little Papillion (sp?) She said his mother was the winning Best of Show papillion at Westminster three years ago. She said that was what the breeder "told" her!! I think if she had a puppy from that litter she certainly would know!! But, who's to say. The puppy was so precious and beautiful, it didn't matter. She was so proud. Every dog should be the apple of their humans' eye! Sometimes I think I'm pretty obnoxious about mine! I NEVER shut up about how terrific they are! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
