Yep, my GSD aged 11 loved to hear "wheres the ball" and he would bring it. He has passed on, and now my new black GSD does the same. Of course I taught him the phrase "wheres the ball" but it didnt take long for him to catch on :-)

My JRT could identify and retreive several of her toys by name. Funny the things they learn and then there are people who call them "dumb".
